Other winners included Jennifer Lopez (Best R&B Act), Red Hot Chili Peppers (Best Rock), Backstreet Boys (Best Group) and All Saints (Best Pop). Despite his five nominations, Robbie Williams received only one statuette, Best Song for "Rock DJ." Whilst on stage he said, "I am not going to say anything bad about people's choices on this one, but I think it's a terrible song and a silly song." The show was hosted by Fugees' Wycelf Jean, who presented a variety of stars and outfits, including one comprising of boxer shorts only, after he jumped into the crowd and had his red leather suit ripped from him. U2 gave the opening performance with their latest No. 1 hit, "Beautiful Day." Other artists playing on stage included the Spice Girls ("Holler"), All Saints ("Pure Shores"), Madonna ("Music"), Backstreet Boys ("Shape Of My Heart") and Robbie Williams, accompanied by Kylie Minogue ("Kids"). The most spectacular appearance was probably by Jennifer Lopez, who literally landed on stage in an aeroplane. The performace was a world premiere of her new song, "Love Doesn't Cost A Thing", taken from her forthcoming second album, "JLO". Ricky Martin's live version of "She Bangs" ended the show with a bang, as the Latin lover was surrounded by very elaborate scenery resembling decorated tanks with water and dancers inside. The most interesting moments centred around Madonna, who continued her tribute to younger pop stars by wearing a T-shirt with "Kylie Minogue" written on it. Recently, Madonna appeared in a Britney Spears T-shirt. Red Hot Chili Peppers members described Madonna as "one sexy bitch," while comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, a.k.a Ali G, described her work as "worthy of masturbation." It seems like Irish boy band Westlife could not be denied victory this time either, as they swiped the Best UK & Ireland Act award, adding one more success in 2000 to their long list. Political issues were present as well during the night, with Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter speaking against a recount of votes in the US presidential election. He and his band members are from Florida. The Free Your Mind award went to Optor, the Serbian opposition movement that helped oust president of Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milosevic, from office. The show is said to be seen by a worldwide audience of one billion viewers. Seven million MTV viewers had voted for their favourites in all categories except Best Video and Free Your Mind awards.
