Billboard Comprehensive Albums History: 2003-Present

Over the years I've received all sorts of valuable information from the Chart Analysis board on UKMIX. It's time to give something back with a new thread on the USA Billboard Comprehensive Albums chart.

The Billboard Comprehensive Albums chart started in late 2003 as an online-only adjunct to the Billboard 200. This chart includes, with current (Billboard 200) catalog titles, all catalog-eligible titles that sell well enough to chart in that week, as well as other limited-market or digital-only releases that don't meet the criteria of Billboard 200 eligibility. The BCA is the real Top 200 in the USA.

The titles on the BCA chart can be separated into three categories:

- Titles on the current Billboard 200 chart ("Comp+200").
- Titles on (or eligible for) the current Top Pop Catalog chart ("Comp+Cat").
- Titles not eligible for the Billboard 200 or Top Pop Catalog charts ("Comp Only").

This thread will be a history of the latter two categories, i.e. Comp+Cat and Comp Only titles.

A few relevant statistics to start off:

- The chart has existed for 228 weeks from Nov 22, 2003 through March 29, 2008. (The first "publication" date of the BCA was Dec. 6, 2003, but Billboard's web site has data for the last two weeks of November. For my purposes, I'll include these weeks.)
- A total of 398 titles (as of March 29, 2008) have charted on BCA without charting in the same week on BB200. Of these, 307 also charted on the Top Pop Catalog chart, and the other 91 were "Comp Only" titles.
- The total number of charting weeks for these titles is 5874 weeks, for an average of 25.8 positions per week.
- By year:
2003: 166 in 6 weeks, average 27.7/week
2004: 1066 in 52 weeks, average 20.5/week
2005: 1335 in 53 weeks, average 25.2/week
2006: 1375 in 52 weeks, average 26.4/week
2007: 1503 in 52 weeks, average 28.9/week
2008: 429 in 13 weeks, average 33.0/week
- The highest position occupied by a Comp+Cat title is #2, by Michael Jackson's "Thriller 25" (March 1 and 8, 2008). It is still in the Top 10 of the BCA chart, only the second Comp+Cat title to do so (the first was The Christmas Collection by Il Divo).
- The highest position occupied by a Comp Only title is #17, by Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill - Acoustic" (Jul 2, 2005). This album charted for 6 weeks and then qualified for the Billboard 200, where it charted for an additional 8 weeks.
- The longest run for a Comp+Cat title is 226 weeks by (what else?) "Dark Side Of The Moon" by Pink Floyd. Dec 6 and 20, 2003 are its only weeks off of the chart so far!
- The longest run for a Comp Only title is just 7 weeks by "Santa Baby", a Starbucks-exclusive Christmas compilation in Dec 2006 and Jan 2007.

I'll post a month's worth of information when I can, with the goal of getting caught up to the present by the end of 2008. I'll intersperse the chart data with assorted special topics.

My source is data collected from the Billboard.com web site, with some confirmation from print editions of Billboard and occasionally from posts here on UKMIX.

As usual with catalog titles, rock is well represented (17 out of 31 by my count). Interesting also that four of these albums have managed such long runs without ever hitting the Top 100 on the BCA chart.

BCA History: Nov-Dec 2003

OK, here's the first installment of the monthly chart history, covering the Christmas season of 2003 and the first 6 weeks of the chart's history.

Factoid: The original "Now That's What I Call Christmas!" compilation has been on the Catalog charts in every Christmas season since its original release in 2001. It has 14 weeks at the top of the Catalog charts, a number exceeded by only two Christmas albums: "Miracles - The Holiday Album" by Kenny G (27 weeks) and "A Fresh Aire Christmas" by Mannheim Steamroller (17 weeks).

Weeks in which the top title was a Comp Only title (and not the #1 on the Top Pop Catalog chart):
- Dec 6 (Sounds of the Season was #72; Now! Christmas was #75, but #1 on TPC).

This month gave us our first two Comp+Cat or Comp Only titles in the Top 40 of the BCA charts, as the Now! Christmas compilation hit #34 on Dec 20, followed by Christmas Eve And Other Stories (Trans-Siberian Orchestra) at #33 on Dec 27.

A qualification on the chart position of Legend (Bob Marley) on Nov 22, 2003 is necessary. This is an interpolated position. This album was on the Nov 22 BCA chart as evidenced by its total number of weeks as recorded by Billboard. It was at #14 on Top Pop Catalog, behind Parachutes (#172 COMP) and ahead of Now That's What I Call Christmas! (#195 COMP). Therefore it is between #173 and #194. CeCe Winans' "Throne Room" was #189 on COMP and #174 on BB200 that week; it trailed the top 13 Top Pop Catalog titles, and two Comp Only titles (#140, #179 on COMP). Since it only trailed these 15 titles, and was 15 positions lower on COMP than on BB200, it did not trail Legend. Therefore Legend is between #190 and #194 on COMP. Unfortunately the information on Billboard's web site cannot pinpoint it any more accurately than that. I assigned it #192 position, in the middle of the range in question.

Factoid: The Beatles' "1" compilation has been at the top of the Catalog charts 9 times, and is approaching 300 weeks on that chart. It was on the BCA chart for the first 151 weeks of its existence, leaving for the first time on Oct. 7, 2006.

BCA History: Feb 2004

Factoid: Josh Groban's self-titled debut album has been on the Catalog chart for 88 weeks now (as of Apr 5, 2008), topping it for 7 weeks. Josh has placed two catalog titles on the Comprehensive charts; this number should grow to four by the end of 2008 as "Awake" and "Noel" become catalog eligible.

Factoid: Runner-up to Dark Side Of The Moon in Top Pop Catalog chart longevity (823 weeks and counting), Bob Marley and the Wailers' "Legend" is nevertheless the all time champion on that chart with 108 weeks - over two solid years - in the #1 position! This is exactly double its closest competitor, "My Own Prison" by Creed, which had a relatively brief 157-week run on the Catalog chart from 1999-2002, but spent 54 weeks at #1.

"Classic Sinatra" is his most successful, with 124 weeks on the Catalog chart and a peak position of #3. I guess that's true, even at the height of Shania-mania, I only liked maybe two or three of the singles, and none of the songs have really aged as well as Billie Jean, Dreams, Money, Go Your Own Way, etc... did. It just seemed so odd that the album continued to sell 200-300k a year until the GH cd came out in 2004, and now it's lucky to sell 20,000 a year.

Factoid: Coldplay's "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" continued to sell well at the end of 2004 when it became catalog eligible, and reached #1 for eight weeks on the Catalog chart in the wake of the 2005 release of "X&Y". It is not, however, the band's long-running effort on the Catalog chart; that would be "Parachutes", with 121 weeks (one of those at #1). "A Rush" managed only 104 weeks. Female soloists and female-fronted acts don't, for whatever reason, seem to have much catalog longevity. Of the seventeen acts with two or more albums with 100+ weeks on the Catalog charts, only two are women. Shania is actually one of them. Of the top 50 longest running catalog records, the only ones (9) with a female presence are:

The first, "It Had To Be You", reached #2 on the Catalog chart and was listed there for 27 weeks. The other two Songbook titles charted for only 4 weeks and 1 week, respectively, on the Catalog chart. Rod's biggest catalog title in terms of longevity? His 2001 "The Very Best Of Rod Stewart", which reached only #40 on the Billboard 200 but spent 72 weeks on the Catalog chart, reaching #8 there.

Christmas is here in force next month, but as always its presence begins to be felt by the end of November. Two Christmas albums, Now! Christmas 2 and Harry Connick Jr.'s "Harry For The Holidays" reach the Comprehensive charts in their first year of eligibility to do so. The former would also top the Catalog chart.

The last week of October 2004 and first week of November saw the all-time (so far) record low number of Catalog albums cross over to the Comprehensive chart, that being 12. The #13 Catalog albums those two weeks were "Ready To Die" by The Notorious B.I.G. and "Metallica" by Metallica, respectively.

Factoid: "My Christmas Prayer" is BeBe Winans' only charting Catalog album, and is as well one of the all-time Catalog chart curiosities. It failed to chart on the Billboard 200 in its original release in 2003, but burst onto the Catalog chart at #1 and the Comprehensive chart at #40 on Dec. 11, 2004. After a five-week run on the Catalog chart, it disappeared, never to be heard from on the charts again.

Although Christmas once again holds sway on the charts, the highest-reaching album this month, "Now That's What I Call Christmas! 2: The Signature Collection", only reached #39. All told, there have been only six occasions when a Catalog or Comp-only title has been in the Top 40 of the Comp chart since its inception through the end of 2004. This is in contrast to nine such occasions just this month (April 2008) alone.

The week of December 4, 2004 requires some explanation. Billboard's Comprehensive Albums and Billboard 200 and Top Pop Catalog charts are usually in agreement with one another; the order followed on one matches the order on the others, such that the entire contents of the Comp chart can be derived if one knows the Billboard 200 for a particular week and the positions of the albums that are unique to Comp (which are the lists I have been posting). However, for some reason the Comp chart did not match up with the Billboard 200 or Top Pop Catalog charts this week. I accept what Billboard has posted for all three charts as official, and make no attempt to reconcile the December 4 positions with the actual order on the Top Pop Catalog chart. If you are curious, the next post will give you all of the details.

All told, 29 Catalog titles reached the Comprehensive chart on December 4, plus 171 titles that were also on the Billboard 200. There were no "Comp-Only" albums that week. The Catalog crossovers were the top 29 on the Catalog chart, but as I have mentioned, they are not in the expected order in the Comprehensive chart in all cases. Of the top 171 on the Billboard 200, only "Mi Sangre" by Juanes (#167) failed to chart on Comprehensive. The others were on the Comp chart in orders that did not always match the Billboard 200. They were joined by #172 on the Billboard 200, "The Very Best Of Sheryl Crow", which charted on Comprehensive at #198.
