This month, there are four non-movers - three of them in the top five, as DJ Schwede, the Freemasons featuring Bailey Tzuke and David Guetta featuring Cozi remain at numbers 2, 3 and 4 respectively. But overtaking them all with a seven-place rise to number one is former Chartbuster "Cry For You". September is the second Swedish act to reach the summit in recent months, but several others have done so over the years - most frequently Ace of Base, who had six chart-toppers!
Of ten other hits climbing this month's chart, Kylie Minogue now has her seventh top ten hit, as rapid riser "In My Arms" races up twenty-three places to number 10. And, among twenty singles that are on the way down, KT Tunstall is still the longer laster, notching up a ninth month in the top 40 with "Through The Dark", while Roisin Murphy is the fastest faller, plummeting seventeen places to number 34. It may soon be over for "Overpowered"!
This leaves five new entries, bringing the total number of hits over nearly twenty-nine years to exactly 2,300! - and the three highest are all by acts making their chart debut. The 2,296th hit, new at number 9, is "Disco Volante" by Swedish DJ Ida Engberg - and this wholly instrumental track, currently enjoying major success in Holland, joins four others with few or no lyrics at all already in the top ten ("Music Box Dancer", "A-A-A-Anthem", "Bucovina" and "Heater"). It must be quite some time since there have been so few "songs" at the top end of my chart.
The 2,297th hit is former Chartbuster "New Soul" by Paris-born singer-songwriter Yael Naim, in at number 17; the 2,298th is Orange County, California pop-rock quartet Mêlée with "Built To Last", new at number 30; and the 2,299th is the sixth success for German Eurodancers Cascada, as "What Hurts The Most" arrives at number 38. And the honour of the 2,300th hit goes to.......French DJ/producer Bob Sinclar, who follows up his first hit "What I Want", now in its sixth month in the chart, with "Together", which features Sheffield-born singer Steve Edwards, and comes in at number 40.
It is just as well that the Eurovision Song Contest is not far away, or there might only have been four new breakers this month. Subs and Tocadisco both debut with instrumental tracks that have spent several weeks in the Ultratop 50 in Flanders (despite being rarely/never played on Radio Donna's chart show); Lebanon-born, but now world-famous, Mika finally appears for the first time, with what surprisingly seems to be one of the least successful singles from his first album, "Happy Ending"; and Canadian twin lesbians Tegan and Sara have a potential hit with "Back In My Head".
But it is the 53rd annual music festival, coming this year from Belgrade, which provides three of this month's new breakers. And it could have been four - but La Casa Azul lost out in the Spanish finals to something which will, in due course, quite probably prove to be a horrendous error of judgement. Joining them in the breakers are one of the few instantly memorable offerings of this year's contest, Pirates of the Sea with Latvia's entry "Wolves of the Sea"; one of the most traditional pop submissions, Andorra's entry "Casanova" by Gisela; and my early favourite to win - which, as Chartbuster, is guaranteed a place in next month's top 40. Sung in an entirely imaginary language by a group of classically-trained musicians who specialise in traditional medieval love songs, this year's Belgian submission is certainly distinctive and different from any of its rivals. Could this be a recipe for success? My Record of the Month is Ishtar, with "O Julissi Na Jalini".
