I take it this list is by albums released each year? Because Alicia Keys' As I am has sold over 950k this year if not

PS These lists are fantastic. Perfect for comparisons. I think it says a lot when The Colour of My Love (a 6x platinum selling album according to the RIAA) didn't even make into onto the list in 1994! Such good all round sales

yep, and I think it helps relativize numbers, for example Mary J Blige's "The Breakthrough" is clearly her most successful album, even if it's not her best selling one.

by the way a Celine Dion fan like you should know that The Colour Of My Love was released in 1993. :P
maybe it could be on the list actually, since the #10 is Snoop Dogg's first album (which sold 6 million according to Soundscan, and only 4,5 million for Celine's album).

The 2006 list makes me feel very sad. Especially number one. I wonder if Whitney Houston's new album will make it onto the 2008 list. :(

don't be too upset by the 2007 list, many of those albums are still going. Plus, Lil Wayne and Coldplay's albums have done 2.1 and 1.5 million in less than two months in a non-holiday period, which was something people figured would never happen in the industry again

You need to look again. He's on there twice. In 2000 and 2002.

Spiderpig, you can add if you want (at leats as a "bubbling under" or something) the album "Spirits having flown" for the year 1979. It was a massive number one in USA, and had already sold like 5 million there (well close to that). By now, it is anywhere from 5 to 6 M in that country if not more. I will see if I find a right link or something to support that claim but it was printed, at the time, in several books. Maybe JcGuzman can help us?.

You can add in brackets that SWW should be at 14M by now. It was last certified in 1995 and has scanned well over 3M since 1991. I don't know it's sales since 1995, but 2M should be a safe bet. Between feb03 and may08 alone it scanned around 930K!!!

AC/DC's Who Made Who is also at 5 x Platinum.

After a rapid search through UKMix, I've noticed that both jcguzman and MJDangerous estimate its sales at around 5 million copies, so I will include it then, thanks for the info.
(and I will remove ELO's greatest hits, certified 4x platinum in 2000)

ok thanks, actually I was wondering if the Beastie Boys album could outsell it one day, but apparently it won't.

true, but it was certified in 2001, while "Rapture" and "Graceland" were certified in 1994 and 1995 respectively. "Graceland" is a good catalog seller, I dunno about "Rapture" but basically I've included it because it was certified 7 years before "Who Made Who".

thx  I'll try to do 1967-1977 this week, I don't think the previous years are really interesting... (well, for me anyway :P ).

Also, I removed "Doggystyle" from the 1993 list and replaced it with the ABBA compilation, since it's #1 on the Catalog chart at the moment.

That´s cool. Thank you, Spiderpig. Sorry, I forgot to tell that this is a great topic. Indeed, it is very educative, a bit like a "guide", very illustrative.

Sad that ELO dropped of the chart, though, as I really like the band. But at least the Bee Gees are fairly represented. :D

I think that Journey are now getting close to the 10 million mark for 1981. With their new album it may be certified as their catalog raised a lot.

Also, Queen´s "Greatest hits 1" is at 8,000 k copies shipped, officially. All I know is there it received its seventh platinum in december 2002, and that it sold 2,620,120 from february 2003 and may this year. This brings it to 9,600,000+ altogether, even with some months missing. The last few weeks of 2002 and the first ones of 2003, as well all its catalog since may (it is continually inside the top 25 pop catalog in USA). So I think we can assume it has sold around 9,800,000 if my calculations are right. What do you think?.

Are you sure about this number ? because that means more than 500k a year, which is a lot.
Also, it was certified 8x platinum in late 2006, while, according to you, it already sold more than 9 million by then... :-?

many albums from 1998 are certified 5x platinum, and to choose the ones to include in the top 10 I used soundscan numbers :

Soundtrack City Of Angels 5,456,000 dec 2005
Brandy Never Say Never 4,500,000 + 665,000 (BMG sales)
Jay-Z Hard Knock Vol 2 5,138,000
Celine Dion These are Special Times 4,844,000 nov 2007

Mariah Carey Number Ones 3,564,000 sep 2007 + 1,000,000 (BMG sales)

the Queen "Greatest Hits" that is 8x platinum is a 1992 release that came out about six months after "Classic Queen" did (which was essentially a collection of latter hits and select 70's gems, but contained "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Under Pressure", neither of which are on the "Greatest Hits" cd from 1992), the 1981 album had a different cover and tracklisting and was long out of print until it was reissued on cd two or three years ago as "We Will Rock You Edition".

Image and Image are totally different albums
