CHRISTMAS CATALOG RUNS - 1992

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion of 1992 was (once again):
"A Fresh Aire Christmas" by Mannheim Steamroller.

For the runner-up, I'll nominate:
"Christmas" by Mannheim Steamroller.
While it did not reach #1 ("A Very Special Christmas" did for one week), it was on the chart for one more week, and was ranked ahead of "AVSC" in every week except January 9 (usually not as big of a sales week).

Notes:
It's Christmas Time [LaserLight] - This album has been variously credited to Crosby/Sinatra/Cole and Crosby/Sinatra/Armstrong. I've seen cover art with both sets of artists. In the 1993 season, only Crosby/Armstrong/Cole were credited.
50 All-Time Christmas Favorites - Listed by Billboard as by "Various Artists". The label credits the Starlite Pop Orchestra. The catalog number is Madacy 10.
A Christmas Album (Amy Grant) - Listed by Billboard as "Christmas Collection". Ms. Grant did not have an album with that name until 2008. The catalog number (Reunion 66259) tracks to a reissue of "A Christmas Album". I have therefore credited the weeks that Billboard lists as "Christmas Collection" to "A Christmas Album".
Elvis' Christmas Album - This was his original 1957 Christmas album, reconfigured in 1970.

Statistics for 1993-1994:

CHRISTMAS CATALOG RUNS - 1994

Image

For the 4th straight year, the Christmas catalog chart champion and runner up were (respectively):
"A Fresh Aire Christmas" by Mannheim Steamroller,
and:
"Christmas" by Mannheim Steamroller. (These folks were quite the Catalog chart juggernaut back then.)
For third place in 1994, I'll nominate:
"When My Heart Finds Christmas" by Harry Connick Jr. This 1993 album snuck in at #1 for a week, and spent seven straight weeks in the top three.

CHRISTMAS CATALOG RUNS - 1995

Image

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion for 1995 was:
"Miracles -- The Holiday Album" by Kenny G.
This 1994 album topped the chart for nine weeks in its first catalog year alone!
The clear runner-up, and #1 for two weeks in its own right, was another 1994 release:
"Merry Christmas" by Mariah Carey.
These two managed to shove "A Fresh Aire Christmas" all the way down to #3 for 1995.

Notes:
It's Christmas Time [LaserLight] - This album (LaserLight 1515) has been variously credited to Crosby/Sinatra/Cole and Crosby/Sinatra/Armstrong. I've seen cover art with both sets of artists. In the 1995 season, only Crosby/Armstrong/Cole were credited.
Elvis' Christmas Album - This was his original 1957 Christmas album, reconfigured in 1970.
Merry Christmas (Bing Crosby) - This is a re-issue of Mr. Crosby's original classic Christmas album that dates all the way back to the first year of the LP chart, 1945. It spent an astonishing 36 weeks at #1 across several Christmas seasons. Two packages with the same name, "White Christmas", and containing much of the same material, were also 1990's charters for Der Bingle.

Statistics for 1995-1996:
Weeks with Christmas albums on chart: 14 (*Record*)
First week with Christmas albums: October 28, 1995
Last week with Christmas albums: January 27, 1996
Total number of Christmas albums reaching chart: 47 (*Record*)

CHRISTMAS CATALOG RUNS - 1996

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion for 1996 was, for the 2nd straight year:
"Miracles -- The Holiday Album" by Kenny G.
The runner-up was a release from 1995:
"Christmas In The Aire" by Mannheim Steamroller.
This album reached #3 on the main album chart, but due to the multi-season strength of "Miracles", was denied the top spot on the Catalog chart and had to settle for #2 - a spot it held for a total of 13 weeks!!

Notes:
It's Christmas Time [LaserLight] - This album (LaserLight 1515) has been variously credited to Crosby/Sinatra/Cole and Crosby/Sinatra/Armstrong. I've seen cover art with both sets of artists. In the 1996 season, only Crosby/Armstrong/Cole were credited.
Elvis' Christmas Album - This was his original 1957 Christmas album, reconfigured in 1970.

CHRISTMAS CATALOG RUNS - 1997

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion for 1997 was, for the 3rd straight year:
"Miracles -- The Holiday Album" by Kenny G.
The runner-up was, for the second straight year:
"Christmas In The Aire" by Mannheim Steamroller.
The #3 and #4 albums (in my judgment) for the season have also both been mentioned previously: "Merry Christmas" by Mariah Carey, and "When My Heart Finds Christmas" by Harry Connick, Jr.
In my judgment, the #5 album was a newcomer on the catalog charts, and although a late bloomer during Christmas season, did manage to spend 3 weeks at #3:
"Christmas Eve And Other Stories" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Notes:
It's Christmas Time [LaserLight] - This album (LaserLight 1515) has been variously credited to Crosby/Sinatra/Cole and Crosby/Sinatra/Armstrong. I've seen cover art with both sets of artists. In the 1997 season, only Crosby/Armstrong/Cole were credited.
Elvis' Christmas Album - This was his original 1957 Christmas album, reconfigured in 1970.
Assessment of the year's new entries - A pretty weak crop in 1997, with only eight new entries. Only one, "Christmas Eve And Other Stories," has had much of a long-term impact. I guess you could also include "Christmas Island" which has at least charted in six different Christmas seasons, and has the distinction of being the only Chirstmas album to return to the Catalog charts after missing one or more Christmas seasons on three different occasions (1999, 2002, 2004).

Statistics for 1997-1998:
Weeks with Christmas albums on chart: 10
First week with Christmas albums: November 15, 1997
Last week with Christmas albums: January 17, 1998
Total number of Christmas albums reaching chart: 48
Number of Christmas albums on chart by week: 1-5-12-18-31-36-36-26-15-1
Christmas Weeks at #1: 6
Christmas Weeks in the top 3: 18
Christmas Weeks in the top 5: 28
Christmas Weeks in the top 10: 59
Christmas Weeks in the top 20: 91

CHRISTMAS CATALOG RUNS - 1998

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion for 1997 was, for the 4th straight year:
"Miracles -- The Holiday Album" by Kenny G. Incredibly, this was the only Christmas album to reach #1 on the Catalog chart during the 1996, 1997, and 1998 seasons - and this was after topping the chart for nine weeks in 1995. With this season it finishes a 27-week run at #1, which is still a record for a Christmas album.
The runner-up was, for the third straight year:
"Christmas In The Aire" by Mannheim Steamroller. It reached #2 for a week.
The #3 album (in my judgment) for the season has also been mentioned previously: "Merry Christmas" by Mariah Carey, which spent 2 weeks at #2 (but fewer weeks on the chart than "Aire").
In my judgment, the #4 album was a newcomer on the catalog charts, fittingly reaching #3, which was also its overall Catalog peak:
"A Very Special Christmas 3".

Notes:
It's Christmas Time [LaserLight] - This album (LaserLight 1515) has been variously credited to Crosby/Sinatra/Cole and Crosby/Sinatra/Armstrong. I've seen cover art with both sets of artists. In the 1998 season, the credited artists were Crosby/Sinatra/Armstrong.
A Jolly Christmas From Frank Sinatra - Not exactly a newly eligible entry for the Catalog chart; it was originally released in 1957.
Beyond The Season - Garth Brooks' first successful Christmas album reached #10 on the charts this year, but abruptly disappeared from the Catalog charts after the 1998 season.
Assessment of the year's new entries - An even weaker crop than in 1997, with only seven new entries. "A Very Special Christmas 3" was the highest-charting of the bunch, but Burl Ives' "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" was the most successful, and still charts today in its 11th Christmas season.

Statistics for 1998-1999:
Weeks with Christmas albums on chart: 11
First week with Christmas albums: October 31, 1998
(Note: No Christmas albums on November 7 and November 14 charts; two Mannheim Steamroller (who else?) albums broke early out of the gate at Halloween.)
Last week with Christmas albums: January 23, 1999

CHRISTMAS CATALOG RUNS - 1999

Image

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion for 1999 was:
"These Are Special Times" by Celine Dion. It was #1 for seven weeks.
The runner-up was another new entry, ringing the bell at #1 for two weeks:
"Home For Christmas" by 'N Sync.
These two monopolized the top two spots for the entire time that Christmas albums were at the top, except for one week where Michael W. Smith (?!!?) jumped 43 spots to #2 with "Christmastime" - and then abruptly fell back to #36 the next week.

Notes:
It's Christmas Time [LaserLight] - This album (LaserLight 1515) has been variously credited to Crosby/Sinatra/Cole and Crosby/Sinatra/Armstrong. I've seen cover art with both sets of artists. In the 1999 season (its last to date), the credited artists were Crosby/Sinatra/Armstrong.
Chicago 25 - This wins my award for the least obviously named Christmas album on this list. :)
Assessment of the year's new entries - An outstanding set of new entries, with 19 albums making the Catalog chart for the first time - five of these in the last two weeks that Christmas albums were on the chart. What's more, four of these have charted in every Christmas season since 1999 as well: "These Are Special Times" (Celine Dion), "The Christmas Attic" (Trans-Siberian Orchestra), "White Christmas" (Martina McBride) and "It's Christmas Time" (Elvis Presley).
(What happened to 'N Sync, you ask? They actually returned to #1 in the 2000 Christmas season, and made the Top 10 in 2001, but have not been seen on the Catalog charts since then. Their self-titled debut album also charted for 53 weeks on Catalog in 2000 and 2001, but they don't sell much nowadays.)

Statistics for 1999-2000:
Weeks with Christmas albums on chart: 12
First week with Christmas albums: November 6, 1999
Last week with Christmas albums: January 22, 2000
Total number of Christmas albums reaching chart: 46

Notes:
The Glorious Sound Of Christmas - This classic Christmas album (1962) by the Philadelphia Orchestra (Eugene Ormandy, conductor) charted for three consecutive Christmas seasons from 1999 through 2001.
Assessment of the year's new entries - Thirteen Christmas albums broke onto the Catalog chart for the first time this year, but not one of them was destined to have a very long shelf life. Kenny G's second holiday album did the best, but even it lasted only three seasons and 24 total weeks on the Catalog chart before it was gone for (until now) good.

Statistics for 2000-2001:
Weeks with Christmas albums on chart: 12
First week with Christmas albums: November 4, 2000
Last week with Christmas albums: January 20, 2001
Total number of Christmas albums reaching chart: 43
Number of Christmas albums on chart by week: 3-3-7-18-25-30-38-38-33-25-14-5

Christmas Weeks in the top 5: 26
Christmas Weeks in the top 10: 55
Christmas Weeks in the top 20: 106

Notes:
What Child Is This? - Esteban's Christmas album appeared on the Catalog charts for a week on August 4, thus winning the Earliest Charting Christmas Catalog Album award. The album disappeared after that, and no other Christmas albums returned to the chart until the last week of October.
The Glorious Sound Of Christmas - This classic Christmas album (1962) by the Philadelphia Orchestra (Eugene Ormandy, conductor) charted for three consecutive Christmas seasons from 1999 through 2001.
Assessment of the year's new entries - Ten Christmas albums charted on Catalog for the first time in 2001-02, but none of them has made it to 20 weeks on Catalog and only one made it as far as 2004 on the Catalog chart: Elvis Presley's "White Christmas" (just what we all need, another Elvis Christmas album).
The most successful both in terms of peak position and weeks on the Catalog chart was Charlotte Church's "Dream A Dream", but its 17 weeks on Catalog is among the fewest for #1 Christmas albums that have had at least two years to chart there (only five other #1's have fewer weeks).
The only other Class of 2001 album to make the Top 10 was the discount priced United Audio compilation entitled "Happy Holidays".

Statistics for 2001-2002:
Weeks with Christmas albums on chart: 13
First week with Christmas albums: August 4, 2001; then October 27, 2001
Last week with Christmas albums: January 12, 2002
Total number of Christmas albums reaching chart: 39

The Christmas catalog chart champion of 2002 was, by far:
The "NOW That's What I Call Christmas!" compilation.
It was #1 for eight straight weeks.

The clear runner-up, and only other album to reach #1 this year:
"Christmas Extraordinaire" by Mannheim Steamroller.
Both albums were spending their first year on the Catalog charts.

Notes::
It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year: This unassuming compilation was the last Christmas album to reach the Catalog charts in October until Josh Groban's "Noel" in 2008. October 19 is the second earliest appearance for a Christmas Catalog album, topped only by Esteban's "What Child Is This" (August 4, 2001).
Joy: A Christmas Collection: A modest seller for Avalon in 2000 (#115 on the Billboard 200), this album is one of twelve Catalog albums (as of November 2009) to spend just one total week on the Catalog chart, but in the Top 10. It is the only Christmas album to accomplish the feat.
The Christmas Shoes: I don't normally give album reviews in this space, but this has to be one of the worst Christmas albums ever (up there with Elmo & Patsy), even though I haven't heard it. That's because the title song is probably the best one and it's a bit of treacly garbage. They even made a movie of it. It stars Rob Lowe so you know it has to be good.
Evaluation of the year's new entries: Ten Christmas albums charted on Catalog for the first time in 2002-03, and among them were two bona fide hits, the original "NOW That's What I Call Christmas!", and the indefatigable Mannheim Steamroller's "Christmas Extraordinaire". "NOW" charted through the 2007 season but its sales probably have been hurt by the other "NOW" packages available. "Christmas Extraordinaire" has made it to Catalog through and including 2008; it remains to be seen whether it can reach again this year. Of the other eight, none have exceeded three Christmas seasons on the chart, and five spent only the 2002-2003 season on the chart, including Barbra Streisand's "Christmas Memories" despite reaching #2.
Statistics for 2002-2003:
Weeks with Christmas albums on chart: 12
First week with Christmas albums: October 19, 2002; then November 9, 2002
Last week with Christmas albums: January 18, 2003
Total number of Christmas albums reaching chart: 44
Number of Christmas albums on chart by week: 1, 1-3-11-17-24-31-37-31-21-14-5

Christmas Weeks in the top 5: 34
Christmas Weeks in the top 10: 53

CHRISTMAS CATALOG/COMPREHENSIVE RUNS - 2003

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion of 2003 was, for the second straight year:
The "NOW That's What I Call Christmas!" compilation.
It was #1 for three weeks, for an overall total of 11 weeks.

Each reaching #1 for the second time this year, after initial #1 runs in 2001 and 2002, respectively, were:
"Christmas Eve And Other Stories" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra and
"Christmas Extraordinaire" by Mannheim Steamroller.

The only other #1 album, and fourth-biggest Catalog Christmas album of the year, was:
"Santa Claus Lane" by Hilary Duff.
The teenage (at the time) Disney recording star was #1 for one week, but in the top five for only three weeks. This was somewhat better than its original release, where it reached only #154 on the Billboard 200 in 2002.

Notes::
Give Love At Christmas: This classic Temptations Christmas album charted on Catalog for ten consecutive Christmas seasons (1992-2001), and again in 2003, where it logged its only week on the top Billboard albums chart. It's the longest-running Christmas Catalog album to fail to reach the Top 20 on the Catalog chart.
Evaluation of the year's new entries: Eleven Christmas albums charted on Catalog for the first time in 2003-04. A few of them managed to chart for more than two years, including Hilary Duff's "Santa Claus Lane" (#1 for a week on the Catalog chart but reached only #80 on the Comprehensive chart), the original "Kidz Bop Christmas", and Alan Jackson's second Christmas album, "Let It Be Christmas". The only one still charting today, however, is from those three now-departed titans of popular music's heyday, better known as "The Rat Pack": Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Their "Christmas With The Rat Pack" is now working on its seventh catalog season and is approaching 50 weeks on the chart.
Along with these catalog albums, four "Comprehensive Only" Christmas albums reached in the early days of the new Comprehensive chart (2003-2009 R.I.P.), all for only this season. The highest charting of these was "Sounds Of The Season", a Motown compilation that reached #72.

CHRISTMAS CATALOG/COMPREHENSIVE RUNS - 2004

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion of 2004 was:
"NOW That's What I Call Christmas! 2: The Signature Collection".
It was #1 for three weeks, and in the top three for 7 weeks. 2004 marked the third straight year that the Catalog Christmas leader was a "NOW" series album.

Also spending time at #1 for the third time in four years was:
"Christmas Eve And Other Stories" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

The only other #1 album, which spent time on the Catalog chart this year only, was:
"My Christmas Prayer" by BeBe Winans.
It spent only four weeks on the Catalog chart, all in late 2004.

Notes:
Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and Christmas With The Rat Pack: These long-time Catalog albums both got off to a strong start in 2004 and reached their all-time peak positions of #4 and #2, respectively.
Miracles -- The Holiday Album: This album still holds the record for most weeks at #1 on the Catalog chart for a Christmas album. It returned to the chart for a week this year but has not been back since 2004.
Evaluation of the year's new entries: Eight Christmas albums charted on Catalog for the first time in 2004-05. The "Now That's What I Call Christmas! 2: The Signature Collection" has been the most successful, but who would have thought that the only one still charting in 2009 would be the soundtrack to a Will Ferrell movie? "Elf" has been on the Catalog chart for six years now, and in 2009 reached its highest position on the main album chart of #102.
Along with these catalog albums, four "Comprehensive Only" Christmas albums reached this season, the highest charting of which was Kevin & Bean's "Christmastime In The 909" at #90. Strangely, the others either charted in August (The O'Neill Brothers) or February (two Disney compilations).

CHRISTMAS CATALOG/COMPREHENSIVE RUNS - 2005

Image

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion of 2005 was:
"The Lost Christmas Eve" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
It was #1 for three weeks, and in the top ten for 7 weeks.

There were two other #1 albums during this season, and both also spent three weeks at #1:
"Rose Of Bethlehem" by Selah, and
the original "NOW That's What I Call Christmas!" compilation. It was the third Christmas season that the last of these spent time at #1.

Notes::
The Gang's All Here: Something unique in the history of the catalog chart happened on December 17, 2005 -- every one of the 35 albums that charted during that Christmas season was on the chart simultaneously for a week.
Rose Of Bethlehem: The Christmas album by Selah led off the Christmas season by entering the Catalog chart at #1 on November 12, and thus became only the second Christmas album to spend a week at #1 while also being the only Christmas album on the Catalog chart. Kenny G's "Miracles -- The Holiday Album" was #1 on November 11, 1995.
"Rose Of Bethlehem", and Steven Curtis Chapman's "All I Really Want For Christmas" after it in 2006-07, were the greatest Christmas "one year wonders" in Catalog chart history, as neither one returned to the Catalog chart the year after spending multiple weeks at #1.
Home For Christmas: Still the biggest of Amy Grant's five Christmas albums to reach the Catalog chart, it returned for a brief cameo in 2005-06 after last appearing on the chart in the 1998-99 season.
This Is Christmas: R&B great Luther Vandross died in July 2005, and his Christmas album appeared on the charts for one final season in 2005-06. It had also reached the charts after he had taken ill in 2003.
Baby, It's Cold Outside: This Starbucks compilation reached as a Comprehensive-only album during the 2005-06 Christmas season, but returned in 2008-09 as a Catalog album after the Billboard rules had been changed to allow exclusive-retailer albums to chart on the main charts.
Evaluation of the year's new entries: Eleven Christmas albums charted on Catalog for the first time in 2005-06, with the biggest blockbuster of the bunch being Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "The Lost Christmas Eve" (in fact, it's the only one still charting in 2009).
Three others managed to crack the top three in their first year, with Selah's "Rose Of Bethlehem" also reaching #1, but not charting again after the 2005-06 season. Larry The Cable Guy's "A Very Larry Christmas" reached #1 in its second catalog season.
Along with these catalog albums, three "Comprehensive Only" Christmas albums reached this season, one for the second straight year. The highest charting of these was the Starbucks compilation "Baby, It's Cold Outside" which reached #27.

The Christmas catalog chart champion of 2006 was:
"The Christmas Collection" by Il Divo.
It was #1 for three weeks, in the top three for 8 weeks, and was the first Christmas Catalog album to crack the Top 10 of the Comprehensive chart.

Three other albums reached #1 during this season:
"All I Really Want For Christmas" by Steven Curtis Chapman,
"A Very Larry Christmas" by Larry The Cable Guy (which spent 8 weeks in the top five), and, for the second straight year,

Notes::
Christmas Portrait: The Carpenters' classic Christmas album had a chart hiatus between 2003 and 2005, but returned to the Catalog chart in 2006-07 for the first time since the end of 2002, and has also charted in every Christmas season since.
Christmas With The Chipmunks: This album charted briefly in 1995 and again in 1996, then disappeared until resurfacing in 2006-07. It spent just six weeks on the Catalog chart and climbed no higher than #44 through 2006-07, but really took off in 2007-08.
Honky Tonk Christmas: Alan Jackson's first Christmas album reached the Catalog charts in 1994 and 1995, and returned for a cameo right at the end of the 2006-07 season. On the Country Catalog chart, it has returned at Christmas every season from 1994 through 2008.
One-One And Done: Christmas came to an abrupt end on the Catalog chart this season. Eleven Christmas albums appeared on the chart on the last date (Jan 13) that featured any Christmas albums.
Evaluation of the year's new entries: Ten Christmas albums debuted on this year's Catalog chart, and the biggest, Il Divo's "The Christmas Collection", continues to chart strongly in 2009-10. There was another #1 among the group, "All I Really Want For Christmas" by Steven Curtis Chapman, but this album has not returned to the Catalog chart since 2006-07. Diana Krall's "Christmas Songs" is the only other 2006-07 debut that is still charting in 2009-10.
Only two "Comprehensive Only" Christmas albums reached this season, and for the second straight year, the biggest Comp-Only hit was a Starbucks compilation, this time "Santa Baby", which cracked the Top 40 twice and reached #36.

CHRISTMAS CATALOG/COMPREHENSIVE RUNS - 2007

Image

The Christmas catalog chart champion of 2007 was:
"The Lost Christmas Eve" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
It was #1 for five weeks, in the top five for 8 weeks, and made it to #19 on the Comprehensive chart, where it spent four weeks in the Top 40.

There are plenty of candidates for second place, as there were two other catalog #1s, three other albums that made it to #2, and five albums (including one that peaked at #3) that reached the Comprehensive Top 40. For consistent performance over the holiday season, I'll nominate for second place:
"Let It Snow! (EP)" by Michael Buble.
This 2003 release reached #2 for a week, but spent 7 weeks in the top 5 and 10 weeks in the top 10, plus 8 weeks in the Comprehensive Top 100, peaking at #24.

Other noteworthy albums include:
"Now That's What I Call Christmas! 3" (#2 for 4 weeks, 6 weeks in top 5, #20 on Comprehensive),
"Winter Wonderland" by Point Of Grace (#1 for 2 weeks, #34 on Comprehensive, 8 top 100 weeks on Comprehensive),
"A Christmas Celebration" by Celtic Woman (#3 for 2 weeks, #23 on Comprehensive),
"Christmas Eve And Other Stories" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra (#2 for one week, new peak of #33 on Comprehensive), and
"A Charlie Brown Christmas" by Vince Guaraldi Trio (#1 for one week in January, #42 on Comprehensive).

Notes:
A Charlie Brown Christmas: After steady progress on the Catalog chart, this 1965 classic finally made it to the pinnacle of the Catalog chart for the first time (and only, so far) on January 12, 2008. It's not likely we'll soon see another album hit #1 for the first time in its 17th Christmas season on the Catalog chart.
Christmas With The Chipmunks: Two albums on different labels with the same name charted simultaneously in the end of December, with the EMI/Madacy version of "Christmas With The Chipmunks" by The Chipmunks featuring David Seville charting only this year. The more popular version, on Capitol, really began to take off in 2007.
Where Are You Christmas?: 2007 marked the first year that there wasn't a continuous string of Christmas #1s from the first week Christmas albums took over #1 to the last for the year. The Eagles' "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" took over #1 for a week between the two #1 weeks for Point Of Grace's "Winter Wonderland" on November 17. Also on December 8, which included post-Thanksgiving sales, Guns 'N Roses' "Greatest Hits" surged to #1 for a week.
Room At The Top: Six different albums cracked the Comprehensive top 40 for a record 17 weeks, but one of them was not Il Divo's "The Christmas Collection", which in 2006 (in its second catalog year) made it to #10, the first catalog Christmas album to crack the sales Top 10 (although Kenny G's "Miracles -- The Holiday Album" also did so when the 'Comprehensive' chart was unofficial).
38 Is Enough: The 38 Christmas albums on the December 15, 2007 Catalog chart had not been surpassed since the end of 1996, but was still well off the record of 45 set on December 21, 1996.
The Gang's All Here: On December 8 and 15, 2007, there were more than 50 Catalog albums in the top 200 sellers for the first time in Comprehensive chart history. On December 8, there were 54 catalog albums on Comprehensive, and only one of the extra four (Sarah McLachlan's "Wintersong", #180 Comprehensive, 51st on Catalog) was a Christmas album. On December 15, 56 catalog albums logged time on the Comprehensive chart, and the last two (Third Day's "Christmas Offerings" at #199, and "Christmas With The Chipmunks [EMI/Madacy]" by the Chipmunks with David Seville at #200) were not on the Catalog chart. These albums all eventually did make the Catalog chart as well.
After You - No, After You!: On December 8, "Christmas With The Chipmunks [Capitol]" and "Elvis Christmas" were #117 and #118, respectively, on the Comprehensive chart, but were in reverse order, #30 and #29 respectively, on the Catalog chart.
Evaluation of the year's new entries: There was a bumper crop of 17 new Christmas entries on the Catalog chart this year, and all 17 of them also spent time on the Comprehensive chart (with one album, "Christmas With The Chipmunks" [Capitol version], reaching the Comprehensive chart for the first time despite previously charting on the Catalog chart). Out of these, Michael Buble's "Let It Snow!" is the most enduring hit, with albums by Celtic Woman, The Chipmunks, Elvis Presley, and Kenny G still charting in 2010. The James Taylor and Sarah McLachlan albums were still charting in 2009.
