Highlights for this week's chart:
  • It took a while for the Black Eyed Peas' to get their first #1 Single, and now they got it, they don't wanna get rid of it so easily! This is the 7th week at the top for "Boom Boom Pow", making it the biggest single of the year since Flo Rida's "Right Round" was #1 for 6 weeks. This week, the BEP's also reached #1 on the Hot 100 Airplay, so they might be stayin' at the top of the Hot 100 for a while since they are also selling huge numbers - 7 straight weeks moving 200k+ so far!
  • Who would've tought he would go this far? Just 3 weeks ago, "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" became rapper Pitbull's first Top 20 hit, and now it goes all the way up to the Top 5! Can't he get any higher? It won't be that easy with Linkin Park, the "Glee" Cast and American Idol songs coming next week!
  • Welcome Jeremih! The R&B singer gets a top 10 hit out of his first ever Hot 100 entry as "Birthday Sex" climbs 13-9 in it's only 6th week, helped mainly by enormous support from Urban radio. Anyone else remembers Omarion's "Ice Box" or J. Holiday's "Bed" while listening to this song?
  • Thanks to American Idol exposure, Katy Perry's "Waking Up In Vegas" shoots 51-13, easily outpeaking her previous single, the not-so-succesful "Thinking Of You"(#29 for 3 weeks earlier this year). Now let's wait and see if the song really becomes a big hit single like "I Kissed A Girl" (#1 for 7 weeks) and "Hot N Cold" (#3 with 38 weeks on chart) or it's just benefiting from AI to get a decent peak.
  • Another song having a huge climb on the chart this week is Lady GaGa's "LoveGame" (61-27), helped by an appearance on Dancing With The Stars and growing airplay on mainstream radio. Seems like she won't go down in history only as the "Just Dance/Poker Face" girl and we we'll be hearing from her a lot more this year! And I personally appreciate that.
  • "Please Don't Leave Me" seems to become the least succesful single out of Pink's latest album, "Funhouse". This week the song finally goes Top 40 (her 14th to date) but for now, it doesn't seem to have the strength to go Top 20 like the previous single, "Sober" (#15). So What? She's Still A Rockstar!
  • Trivia Of The Week: Why do they keep listing Nicole Scherzinger as featured artist on her own group's singles? Is her THAT desperate to see her name written on the Hot 100 history books, since she couldn't make it on her own?

Green Day's '21st Century Breakdown' Breaks In At No. 1
May 20, 2009

Editor: Keith Caulfield; Contributors: Wade Jessen, Gary Trust, Alex Vitoulis; Editorial Director: Silvio Pietroluongo

Green Day's "21st Century Breakdown" debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, giving the trio its second chart-topper . . . The album opens with 215,000 after just three days of release, as the set was issued Friday, May 15, but Nielsen SoundScan's tracking week ends on Sunday of each week . . . Also starting high on the chart this week: Cam'Ron, Paul Wall, Steve Earle and Parachute . . . In Progress Reports, the Offspring continues to find Modern Rock success with its "Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace" album, the Black Eyed Peas hit No. 1 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart and visit the Hot Latin Songs tally with "Boom Boom Pow," and Depeche Mode takes "Wrong" to No. 1 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart.

FLASH POINTS

• Green Day bows at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with "21st Century Breakdown," selling 215,000 in an abbreviated three-day sales week. The Reprise/Warner Bros. set saw an off-cycle release on Friday, May 15, in order to more closely align its worldwide street dates. Nielsen SoundScan's tracking week ends on Sunday.

• "Breakdown" gives the band its second chart-topper, following 2004's "American Idiot," which debuted with 267,000 after a normal-length's week of sales. Both "Breakdown" and "Idiot" were hampered by not being stocked in Wal-Mart stores, as the big-box giant declines to stock albums that carry parental advisory stickers. (Neither album was available in an edited version.)

• The sales figure for "Breakdown" will perhaps grow on next week's chart, when it will have a full seven-day week's worth of sales reflected on the tally. However, Eminem's "Relapse" -- which was released yesterday (May 19) -- will presumably give the rapper his fifth consecutive No. 1 album.

• In non-Green Day chart news this week, Cam'Ron's "Crime Pays" cashes in with a No. 3 debut, selling 43,000 copies. That gives the rapper -- who has been absent from the chart since 2006 -- his fifth top 10 album . . . Paul Wall's "Fast Life" enters at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 with 22,000. His last set, "Get Money Stay True," bowed at No. 8 with 92,000 in 2007. He topped the tally with "The Peoples Champ" in 2005 when that set opened at No. 1 with 176,000 . . . Roots rock singer/songwriter Steve Earle achieves the highest-charting album of his career as his "Townes" set bows at No. 19 with 18,000. The effort comprises 15 songs written by the late Townes Van Zandt.

• New rock band Parachute lands at No. 39 with its debut album, "Losing Sleep," starting with 11,000 solely from sales through the iTunes Store. The e-tailer got the set one week early—all other physical and digital retailers released the album yesterday (May 19). Not coincidentally, the set's song "Under Control" was promoted as a free single of the week in the iTunes Store, which likely garnered a lot of consumers to snap up the economically priced $6.99 album.

• Elsewhere in the top 10 this week . . . the "Hannah Montana: The Movie" soundtrack holds at No. 2 with 68,000 (down 17%), Lady GaGa's "The Fame" moves up two slots to No. 4 with 41,000 (up less than 1%), Rascal Flatts' "Unstoppable" slips one position to No. 5 with 33,000 (down 44%), Bob Dylan's "Together Through Life" falls one rung to No. 6 with 31,000 (down 40%), Taylor Swift's "Fearless" stays put at No. 7 with 30,000 (down 25%), Chrisette Michele's "Epiphany" falls from No. 1 last week to No. 8 with 29,000 (down 65%), Rick Ross' "Deeper Than Rap" falls four slots to No. 9 with 26,000 (down 24%), and Ciara's "Fantasy Ride" rounds out the top 10, at No. 10 (26,000; down 68%), after its No. 3 opening last week.

MARKET WATCH

• Album units, current chart week: 5.8 million units
• DOWN 10.5% from last week's charts: 6.5 million units
• DOWN 21.6% from same week, 2008: 7.4 million units
• This week: Only the No. 1 album sells more than 100,000 copies.
• This week last year on the Billboard 200: Death Cab for Cutie notched its first No. 1 album with "Narrow Stairs," entering with 144,000. Frank Sinatra's "Nothing But the Best" bowed at No. 2 with 99,000, while Jason Mraz's "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things." started at No. 3 with 73,000 and Duffy's "Rockferry" landed at No. 4 with 71,000.

BORDERLINES

• The No. 100 album this week, Metallica's "Death Magnetic" (Warner Bros.), sold 5,000.
• The No. 100 album for the same week of 2008, Ashlee Simpson's "Bittersweet World" (Geffen), sold 7,000.
• Average total of the No. 100 album for the same week of the year during the past 100 years (2000-2009): 9,733.

PROGRESS REPORTS

• The Offspring collects its fourth Modern Rock radio airplay chart hit from its "Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace" album as "Half-Truism" debuts at No. 31. "Half" follows "Hammerhead" (No. 2), "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" (No. 1) and "Kristy, Are You Doing OK?" (No. 7). It's only the second time the rock band has scored four Modern Rock hits from one album . . . The last time it happened was with 1998's "Americana," which spawned "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)" (No. 3), "Why Don't You Get a Job?" (No. 4), "The Kids Aren't Alright" (No. 6) and "She's Got Issues" (No. 11).

• The Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" hits No. 1 on the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart this week—and it's unbelievably only the second chart-topper for the group. Its first came in 2003 with "Where Is the Love?" . . . The Peas' last album, 2005's "Monkey Business," spawned four top 20 Mainstream Top 40 hits, with the most successful being the No. 3-peaking "Don't Phunk With My Heart" . . . In other "Boom" news, the track enters the Hot Latin Songs radio airplay tally at No. 50—the second Latin hit for the group after "My Humps" hit No. 46 in 2006.

• Depeche Mode claims its eighth No. 1 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart as "Wrong" ascends to the top slot. The occasion ties the veteran act with Pet Shop Boys for the most No. 1s among groups. The latter act may pull into the lead shortly though, as their own "Love Etc." debuts at No. 36 this week.

A LOOK AHEAD

• Among the albums released this week, due on next week's charts: Eminem's "Relapse," Kenny Chesney's "Greatest Hits II," Tori Amos' "Abnormally Attracted to Sin," Dane Cook's "Isolated Incident," Lionel Richie's "Just Go," Mat Kearney's "City of Black and White," Iron and Wine's "Around the Well," Ruben Studdard's "Love Is," Busta Rhymes' "Back On My B.S." and Method Man and Redman's "Blackout! 2."

• Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2008 when: 3 Doors Down's self-titled album knocked in at No. 1 in its first week, selling 154,000 copies. Bun B's "Il Trill" began at No. 2 with 98,000, and Julianne Hough's self-titled album landed at No. 3 with 67,000.

So where is LoveGame expected to chart?

And will this be the last week of BBP on the top? I heard the new Linkin Park single is set to go to the top next time?

Green Day Takes Top Spot On Billboard 200

May 20, 2009

In non-Green Day chart news this week, Cam'Ron's "Crime Pays" (Diplomatic Man/Asylum) cashes in with a No. 3 debut, selling 43,000 copies. That gives the rapper, who has been absent from the chart since 2006, his fifth top 10 album. Paul Wall's "Fast Life" (SwishaHouse/Asylum) enters at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 with 22,000. His last set, "Get Money Stay True," bowed at No. 8 with 92,000 in 2007. He topped the tally with "The Peoples Champ" in 2005 when that set opened at No. 1 with 176,000. Roots rock singer/songwriter Steve Earle achieves the highest charting album of his career as his "Townes" set (New West) bows at No. 19 with 18,000. The effort is comprised of 15 songs written by the late Townes Van Zandt.

New rock band Parachute lands at No. 39 with its debut album "Losing Sleep" (Mercury), starting with 11,000 solely from sales through the iTunes Store. Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending May 17) totaled 5.82 million units, down 10.5% compared to the sum last week (6.51 million) and down 21.6% compared to the same sales week of 2008 (7.43 million). Year to date album sales stand at 136.4 million, down 13.3% compared to the same total at this point last year (157.3 million).
