I already have the articles written in advance, I plan to do one a day, and you know I love feedback

#100 Keane
Image
A lot of people bash them for being nasally and whiny, but I think Keane are one of the best pop bands to emerge in the past five years. Their first two albums were huge in Europe but sadly their third, Perfect Symmetry seemed to bomb largely there. In the US they're sadly seen as a one-hit wonder for "Somewhere Only We Know". I like their third album best as its their most diverse work to date and is the one that shows they aren't just one of the long line of Coldplay ripoffs.
favorite album: Perfect Symmetry
favorite songs: Spiraling, Everybody's Changing, Better Than This, Bedshaped, Perfect Symmetry...

Everybody's Changing is a class tune, and Somewhere Only We Know is, in its own way, really good. Very hit & miss with me though, I'm afraid!

Looking forward to this list John! :D

Very good start, Sir!
I will have Keane around the same position when I do my top 100 artists (hopefully early in the new year).
The only problem I have with them is that it is hard to go through a whole album of theirs without falling asleep (same as Coldplay). They do have some excellent tunes, though.

I don't mind their first album but they went downhill with their second onwards....

Now this should be very interesting! Have to say your No. 100 is a very deserving entry, they've had some great songs!

99. Jewel

I don't know why, but I have enjoyed Jewel since her first album back in the mid-90's, even though folk was never really my scene. I loved her cutesiness but also thought she had a great pop sensibility. I got the chance to see her live in 2002 and she gave a nice show. My favorite work of hers was her "sellout" 0304, but negative reaction made that sound short lived, and now she's doing country, which admittedly she isn't half bad at.

favorite album: 0304

favorite songs: Standing Still, Haunted, You Were Meant For Me, Adrian, Intuition...

0304 is the only album of hers I listen to. I have others but they are bland by comparison.

Jewel is just not my kind of artist. Not a fan. I've given my thoughts on Keane already. :)

Check 0304 out. Jewel would rank much higher if she did more albums like this. Of course, it was called a sellout because it was something more than her with an acoustic guitar.

98. The Bangles

Image

Was there anyone who was a child in the 1980's who didn't love "Walk Like An Egyptian"? That was just one of a dozen or so hits these ladies had during the late 1980's. I always had a softer spot for The Bangles than The Go-Go's, perhaps because I have more memories with them while I saw The Go-Go's as the band Belinda Carlisle was once in. They gave us three great power-pop albums in the 80's but didn't truly break big until Prince gave them "Manic Monday". From then on it was a non-stop hit parade.

Favorite album: Different Light

Favorite songs: Manic Monday, Eternal Flame, If She Knew What She Wants, Walk Like An Egyptian, Angels Do Fall In Love...

Bangles did some great songs, especially Eternal Flame (classic) and Manic Monday.

you've never heard "Manic Monday"? Prince wrote it. "Eternal Flame" was also a huge #1 hit for them.

I've heard the three singles you have mentioned and the odd album track of theirs. Not my thing tbh, but I do love Eternal Frame and Manic Monday!

One big hit everyone seems to forget was their remake of Hazy Shade Of Winter. Even though they were mainly a pop band, they really rocked out on that Simon And Garfunkel cover.
