Too many awards for the old chaps
But then again I've never bought Q - does it cover oldies as well?

Can I say that they are all well deserved and highly predictable - apart from that bizarre win by Christina.
Great to see the Thrills win best newcomer, and that there's finally some notice of the Blur album. Also no surprise that Jane's Addiction have been noted this year, such was the gargantitude of their comeback critically.

I can't believe Christina - would have made a better 'best video' than song...though it my favourite of hers.

I'm not sure about Think Tank being the best album, it pales in insignificance to their other work and seems to be a bunch of quickly forgettable songs. It was quite a change of style though as it's much more brooding and radioheadish.
radiohead fans note: I'm not saying Blur are anywhere near Radiohead, just going slightly down that path of darker songs.

It's not just miserable stuff that deserves an award now and then, you know. A fun upbeat track like "Dirrty" surely deserved it.

Er... I must have it all backwards, because "Dirrty" is one of the most excruciatingly boring songs I've ever heard in my life.
I mean... the song has one chord. The melody has little over 2 notes! There's no kind of counterpoint or texture. And the rhythm is just weird and awkward. It all sounds amateurish to me, like it was written by someone who doesn't know a thing about music.
And it's not upbeat - if I recall correctly it's about 105bpm, making it distinctly midbeat.
I honestly can't see what's fun about it. Unless it's supposed to be satirical by being deliberately bland. Which I doubt.
I realise I'm "wrong" because this song won an award. But this is my firm opinion.
I suddenly feel like Simon Cowell or Richard Parks!

Damn - *makes mental note to be less shallow*
[less-shallow/mode]
The choreography was truly brilliant and the artistic components such as lighting, background, props and camera panning were exceptional...

Well, I've never really liked the song, but there's no question that 'Dirrty' has proved massively popular over this last year. It's still one of the most requested tracks amongst our crowd, whilst other tracks released around the same sort of time have faded into the pale.
On the the strength of its long-lasting appeal, I think it deserves recognition...
Regards,
Cypher

I relalise that failure to comply with "musical standards" doesn't necessarily make a song bad; a song can be greater than the sum of its parts.
But I just don't feel that "Dirrty" is greater than the sum of its parts. I can think of good songs that are based around one chord, but they aren't boring. This song has nothing special about it. It just seems boring.
I can't see it taking her more than 10 minutes to compose. Again, that doesn't make a song bad, but... how can she win an award for that? It's not like the lyrics are anything meaningful. Even the title seems to be a typo!
I don't think "going out" would help me appreciate it. My speakers are fine! And anyway, if I went out I wouldn't be going to the sort of clubs that play that song! | aneta wrote: | Besides, what you said makes no sense anyway. "little over 2 notes" - haha. Maybe when you try performing it it's little over two notes only. Dear oh dear. |
There are obviously a lot more than two notes. But only two notes are really stressed, the rest is more like talking. | aneta wrote: | Oh well, it wouldn't be so special if everyone liked it anyway, so it's cool |
In that case you should be pleased to hear that I think it's one of the worst songs ever released!
BadRapture,
I'm sure the video's wonderful, but that doesn't make it a good song!
Cypher,
Nice to know I'm not on my own!

Can I back up Lee here.
I think I already said it above anyway. All the other awards went to deserved (if rather painfully obvious) winners.
However, whilst I've liked both "Beautiful" and "Fighter" I really do not like Dirrty. I can understand the [raciallydodgymode]shallow Australian male outlook that the video shows her with very little clothing [/raciallydodgymode] however that doesn't help what is a truly boring, repetitive and tuneless song. True there's more than 2 notes, but there's not all that many more than 2

Dude, can you lighten up just once? You would analyse the arse out of a cow. Sit back, chill out and take Aneta's advice and maybe go out a bit
Oh and BTW, a good video deffo does make a song better

Sorry if you think I'm too analytical! I'm not trying to annoy anyone, I'm just trying to explain the way I feel about a piece of music and trying to put a few important points across.
I could happily switch off my brain and write nothing but jokes and emoticons; but I think intelligent conversation is also part of what UKMix is about.
I don't think I'm too serious; I think I'm fun. But if people really think I need to lighten up then I'll take it on board.
Look... here's two emoticons making out:

I really like "Dirrty"! It's fun, danceable and all that but I wouldn't award it for anything, personally.
As for the video, nah, not for me. I know as a red-blooded heterosexual male that the video was squarely aimed at me, but I don't think it's good. First off, it's hard to find Chris attractive when she's acting like that - pornstars seemingly have more class than that. Didn't like the freakshows or David LaChapelle's direction, but the mud-wrestling was OK.

It sounds like one tacky video! Maybe Christina should've won the "best pornography" award?
