920 Eminem – Mockingbird
entry date: 14/05/2005
peak: 4
weeks in top 75: 12
Eminem switches moods like gloves, doesn’t he? A slight step back from the crazy and this dedication to his daughter Hayley is almost sweet. If only he didn’t kill the bird in the end… 3rd single from “Encore”.
919 Gwen Stefani – Wind It Up
entry date: 16/12/2006
peak: 3
weeks in top 75: 10
Stealing the almost unfairly catchy yodeling beat from no less than “The Sound Of Music”, Gwen Stefani opened her second solo album with a bang, despite getting somewhat lukewarm response. Somewhat a quick faller at that era for an artist of that caliber.
918 Artful Dodger featuring Lifford – Please Don’t Turn Me On
entry date: 25/11/2000
peak: 4
weeks in top 75: 10
Artful Dodger were one of the most successful acts to emerge in the garage era and clocked no less than 5 top 10 hits on their way. This was their forth and features the vocals by Lifford (who is NOT the county town in Ireland, despite what wikipedia might make you think), the singer of Public Demand, who had a #41 hit in 1997.
917 Goldfrapp – Ooh La La
entry date: 20/08/2005
peak: 4
weeks in top 75: 13
It took Goldfrapp some patience, change of attitude and style before they finally managed to struck gold in 2005 with their third album “Supernature”. This was the first single from it, and it made top 5 much to everyone’s shock, and it pretty much stands as their only pop hit, despite two more crash-and-burn top 10 hits. This is their only entry, anyway.
916 Ricky Martin with Christina Aguilera – Nobody Wants To Be Lonely
entry date: 10/03/2001
peak: 4
weeks in top 75: 12
When the forces join… well, this happens. The duet of Ricky and Christina was somewhat untimely, as it happened when the Latin fever almost ended, but at least it gave Ricky his last to date top 5 hit.
915 Westlife – Tonight / Miss You Nights
entry date: 05/04/2003
peak: 3
weeks in top 75: 10
More Westlife here, and this single was the second lifted from their “Unbreakable” hits collection. Not much else can be said here except that “Miss You Nights” is an unusual choice of a cover version, the original being a minor top 15 hit for one of the biggest jokes of the decade, Sir Ciff Richard.
914 Vengaboys – Shalala Lala
entry date: 11/03/2000
peak: 5
weeks in top 75: 10
This single was the group’s lowest charting at that moment and it only got worse from that point. So that’s basically what it can be remembered for. The beginning of the end.
913 Moloko – The Time Is Now
entry date: 01/04/2000
peak: 2
weeks in top 75: 10
It only feels right seeing Moloko alongside Goldfrapp, since you can’t argue the influences here. This #2 hit was their only real attempt to capitalize on the success of remixed “Sing It Back” from 1999, and it is by far their biggest hit of the decade. Hence, no more top 1000 entries for them either. At least both did better than Frou Frou…
912 Dido – Thank You
entry date: 02/06/2001
peak: 3
weeks in top 75: 10
Of course, you remember the story of Eminem accidentally turning Dido into a worldwide superstar and that this was the song he was inspired by. Second single for her and a good reminder of the days when she couldn’t lose.
911 Gorillaz – 19/2000
entry date: 07/07/2001
peak: 6
weeks in top 75: 10
Didn’t we all love their videos back in the day? Second single release for Gorillaz is known in both original version heard in the video and the Soulchild remix that the radio stations used. Nowhere as big as “Clint Eastwood”, but a novelty tale breaker if anything.
910 Cam’ron featuring Juelz Santana – Hey Ma
entry date: 08/02/2003
peak: 8
weeks in top 75: 10
Following the success of “Oh Boy”, Cam’ron released this song, that is thankfully not a story of wooing older gals, despite what the title might suggest. His biggest hit, it also featured the guest spot from Juelz Santana, whose biggest success was, of course, his appearance of Chris Brown’s debut smash.
909 Avril Lavigne – Sk8er Boi
entry date: 28/12/2002
peak: 8
weeks in top 75: 9
Grammatically painful title of this song I can only see as an attempt to make it… slightly more complicated (no pun intended), as the song itself just couldn’t be simpler. 2nd single off her debut, this was top 10 around Christmas 2002, hence got some extra time up in the charts.
908 A1 – Take On Me
entry date: 09/09/2000
peak: 1
weeks in top 75: 11
And our only #1 hit of this bunch is by A1. The long gone boyband spent 1999 building up the hype and with the first single from the new album, which is also a cover of the classic hit for a-ha, they couldn’t go wrong and hit #1 with ease. Never mind how fast they fell though.
907 George Michael – Amazing
entry date: 13/03/2004
peak: 4
weeks in top 75: 11
It is pretty amazing actually, to see George Michael in this chart. While he never felt too absent from the public eye, he couldn’t exactly produce any big hits, and this was his biggest success and his only top 5 hit of the decade. Lifted from his #1 album “Patience”.
906 Embrace – Nature’s Law
entry date: 01/04/2006
peak: 2
weeks in top 75: 10
Let’s watch some big names missing top 900, shall we? Embrace were resurrected by the loving heart of Chris Martin and his song “Gravity” gave them quite a big hit in 2004, and everyone held their breath for their gimmickless follow-up. So it delivered their biggest hit and, as it tends to happen, it went downhill from there. An indie anthem of 2006, this is their only top 1000 entry.
905 Lady GaGa - LoveGame
entry date: 22/08/2009
peak: 19
weeks in top 75: 14
Oh my, a #19 hit? Of course, since it’s GaGa it can be understood. 4th single off the amazingly big “The Fame” underperformed just a little bit, but, indeed, it still was a long runner enough to make the top 1000.
904 Primal Scream – Country Girl
entry date: 27/05/2006
peak: 5
weeks in top 75: 13
Another indie classic from 2006 here, and it’s a rather surprising one. Primal Scream lived a happy life of heroes of the underground and stopped dreaming of a top 10 hit long time ago, and suddenly they reinvented themselves as a raunchy rock band and, whoops, scored their biggest hit in the UK. They didn’t have any other top 20 hits this decade though.
903 Empire Of The Sun – We Are The People
entry date: 23/05/2009
peak: 14
weeks in top 75: 15
Another result of a prolonged chart run, the Aussie duo scored their only top 40 hit to date last year, won plenty of ARIA awards on the way and the jury is still open regarding them getting another top 40 hit in the UK.
902 Travis – Sing
entry date: 09/06/2001
peak: 3
weeks in top 75: 14
Travis sold millions of albums in 1999-2001, and even managed to finally get a top 3 hit with this single, but, of course, this rock classic (yes, it’s naff, but still a classic) becomes their only top 1000 entry.
901 N-Trance – Set You Free
entry date: 22/09/2001
peak: 4
weeks in top 75: 12
Finally something from the world of dance music. The classic 1994/1995 hit got a new treatment in 2001 and made the top 5 for the 2nd time thanks to a brand new set of remixes, the leading of which created by Rob Searle, the man who was also behind the third coming of Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
