MUSICWEEK ARTICLE

The singles market has been a little sluggish in recent weeks, and last week was no exception, with sales falling 0.91% week-on-week to 2,607,024 – 0.92% below same week 2009 sales of 2,631,327.

Part of the problem is a lack of worthy new releases, with OMG by Usher feat. will.i.am the only single able to command enough sales to secure a Top 20 debut this week.

Debuting at number 13 (18,774 sales), the track is the first single from Usher’s new album Raymond V Raymond. It brings to five the number of current Top 75 entries penned by will.i.am, who also co-authored Steve Aoki’s I’m In The House (on which he also contributes vocals as Zuper Blahq) and three Black Eyed Peas hits, Meet Me Halfway, I Gotta Feeling and Rock That Body.

The last of these drifts 11-12 this week (20,211 sales) and seems certain to end BEP’s run of three consecutive number ones, if not its run of eight straight Top 10 singles.

While Glee Cast’s Defying Gravity has singularly failed to do that, falling 38-39-60-87 since its debut, Pixie Lott’s Gravity has shown more of a disregard for the law that what goes up must come down, by growing its sales for 10 weeks in a row. The track enters the Top 20 on its seventh week in the Top 75, climbing 23-20 (12,725 sales). It’s the fourth single from the singer’s Turn It Up album, which holds at number 16 this week, with sales of 11,358 lifting its career tally to 423,380.

TV played a big part in determining the number ones this week, with its continued exposure – and I use the word advisedly – of the explicit Lady GaGa & Beyoncé video for Telephone helping them to ring up a second week at number one on the singles chart, while the screening of Boyzone’s Stephen Gately tribute programme earned said act’s Brother a return to the album summit.

After climbing 12-1 last week to become the first chart-topper ever to namecheck Alexander Graham Bell’s communication device, Telephone extends its lead over Tinie Tempah’s Pass Out, which continues at number two.

Telephone sold 58,299 copies last week, while Pass Out –the first number one to name check Scunthorpe – sold a further 51,335 copies.

GaGa’s album The Fame surged back to number one last week, partly due to Telephone’s success, but is itself knocked off the summit this week by another resurgent album – Boyzone’s Brother.

Helped by the band’s hour-long tribute to Stephen Gately, which drew an audience of more than 7.5m for ITV, Brother returns to number one a fortnight after debuting in that position, with sales increasing 60.1% week-on-week to 61,887.

The album’s introductory single, Gave It All Away, which peaked at number nine three weeks ago, also rallies, improving 29-10 with sales increasing 123.7% to 22,729.

The most recent Boyzone compilation, 2008 release Back Again: No Matter What climbs for the fifth straight week, leaping 57-18 (9,487 sales) to achieve its highest chart placing for more than a year.

Brother is the fifth number one album of Boyzone’s career, and the third to return to number one. Where We Belong – their last studio effort – rebounded 21-1 in 1998, ending a 13-week absence from the summit after then current single No Matter What was added to it, and 1999 compilation By Request climbed 2-1 after a fortnight off the summit.

Canadian teen star Justin Bieber’s first album, My World, catapults 33-3 (36,709 sales), to eclipse the number four position in which it debuted nine weeks ago. Back then, it was a nine track album (seven audio tracks, two videos) but the new 2.0 version of the album features 18 audio tracks, including current single Baby, a collaboration with Ludacris which itself improves 4-3 (41,146 sales).

There are three new entries to the Top 20, with first ever appearances at this level for Laura Marling and Joe Bonamassa, and a welcome return for Goldfrapp.

20 year old singer/songwriter Marling’s 2008 debut Alas I Cannot Swim peaked at number 45 but, helped by a Mercury Music Prize nomination, has thus far sold more than 75,000 copies, paving the way for I Speak Because I Can, which debuts at number four (25,274 sales). Despite enjoying considerable support from Radio 1, Radio 2 and Absolute Radio, among others, Marling has considerably less success with her singles. Her latest, Devil’s Spoke climbs 107-97(2,320 sales) on its second week in the chart, providing her first ever Top 100 single with her sixth release.

One of the world’s pre-eminent blues-rockers, Joe Bonamassa has taken longer than Marling to reach the sharp end of the chart.

His latest release Black Rock is Bonamassa’s 11th album, and includes his interpretations of Leonard Cohen’s Bird On A Wire, Jeff Beck’s Spanish Boots and Wille Nelson’s Night Life. It hastens to a number 14 debut (12,550 Sales), and is the fourth Bonamassa album in a row to provide the 32-year-old New Yorker with a new career peak.

His first seven albums failed to chart at all but 2007’s Sloe Gin reached number 50, 2008’s Live From Nowhere In Particular reached number 45, and The Ballad Of John Henry raised the ante even more, climbing to number 26 last year.

After consecutive number two albums with Supernature (2005) and Seventh Tree (2008), Anglo/Irish duo Goldfrapp have to settle for a less lofty number six debut for latest album, Head First on sales of 23,261 copies. Lay the blame on the relatively poor performance of introductory single Rocket, which reached number 47 a couple of weeks ago.

It’s interesting to note that despite not generating a Top 40 hit between them, the Marling, Goldfrapp and Bonamassa albums all fared better than or as well as last week’s top entry, Sugababes’ Sweet 7, which is home to three Top 10 hits but could only debut at number 14, and now dives to number 43 (4,125 sales).

Gabriella Cilmi’s introductory hit, Sweet About Me, took 14 weeks to make the Top 10 in stark contrast to latest single On A Mission, which debuted at number nine a fortnight ago but dropped immediately.

The slow but steady growth of Sweet About Me was also reflected by Cilmi’s 2008 debut album, Lessons To Be Learned, which debuted at number 31 on sales of 6,052 copies and peaked at number eight six weeks later, before going on to sell 267,000 copies. Follow-up Ten - from which On A Mission is the first single – arrives at number 28 this week, on sales of 6,370 copies.

Cilmi was only a year old when Mary J Blige made her album chart debut 17 years ago last week, with What’s The 411. But Blige is one of R&B’s more enduring talents, and chalks up her 10th charted set as Stronger With Each Tear debuts at number 33 (5,111 sales). Introductory single I Am reached number 34 three weeks ago, providing Blige’s 37th Top 75 single.

After reaching a 26 week low last week, album sales recover slightly, climbing 3.72% week-on-week to 1,861,332 – 5.69% below same week 2009 sales of 1,973,600.

It seems Parachute might turn out to be a bigger hit then 3 Words was for Cheryl :D

I'm happy but at the same time i think 3 Words was much better

However, both songs ("Parachute" & "3 Words") can't compare to "Fight For This Love" which was one of the best pop tracks last year.

So happy for Laura Marling, she deserves it . You have to celebrate when real artists sell more than sugababes for example.

I agree, much like the extra-REAL Justin Bieber at #3.

There's no change at the top this week as Lady Gaga's 4th chart topper continues her trend of number 1 hits to spend more than a week in 1st place. Her first number 1 hit 'Just dance' was on top for 3 weeks in January of 2009, 'Poker face' was on top for 3 weeks in April of 2009, Bad romance spent 2 weeks (non-consecutively) on top in December 2009 and January 2010 and now 'Telephone' is at the top for a 2nd week.

Still in 2nd place is former chart topper, Tinie Tempah's 'Pass out', there's a change at number 3 however, Justin Bieber and Ludacris' 'Baby' has climbed back up a place, having dipped last week, now back at its previous chart peak.

Cheryl Cole's 'Paracute' has finally reached the top 5; having now spent 7 weeks inside the top 40 with continuous climbing, this week it's up 1 more place to number 5 making it 4 top 5 hits out of 4 releases (outside of Girls Aloud), the others being 'Heartbreaker' in 2008 and 'Fight for this love' and '3 words' in 2009.

Also climbing to a new peak is Inna's 'Hot'; after being last weeks highest new entry at 8, this week it's up 2 places at number 6.

Fans of Young Money can finally breathe a sigh of relief as 'Bedrock' has finally penetrated the top 10; the track has climbed almost every week since debuting at 40 9 weeks ago and this week is up 3 places to a new peak of number 9.

Also climbing into the top 10 is Boyzone's 'Gave it all away'. It's not the first time this has been inside the top 10, but it has this week leaped 19 places back up the chart to number 10. The reason for this is almost certainly the tribute concert and documentaries shown on itv1 and itv2 last weekend. The song is now only 1 place below its number 9 peak that it reached 3 weeks ago.

After a 5 week run in the top 10, Florence and the machine and Dizzee Rascal's collaboration, 'You got the dirtee love' has dipped a place to number 11. Florence certainly has nothing to complain about however, being the only artist to have 3 hits in the top 40 this week, the others being former top 5 hit 'You've got the love' which is back up a place at 35 on its 22nd charting week and 'Dog days are over' which is a re-entry at 38, the track having reached number 23 in January, clocking up its 5th charting week.

Also dipping just below is Black Eyed Peas' 'Rock that body'; the track climbed to number 11 last week, but has now dipped a place at 12. If the track continues to decline it will be their first single not to reach the top 10 since 'Let's get it started' which peaked at 11 in the summer of 2004.

This weeks highest new entry is a collaboration between Usher and Will I Am, a member of Black Eyed Peas. The track, entitled 'OMG' has landed at number 13 and is the first top 40 success for Usher since 'Moving mountains' peaked at 25 in the summer of 2008. 'OMG' is Usher's 15th uk top 40 success, the biggest hits being his 3 number 1 hits 'You make me wanna' in 1998, 'Yeah' in 2004 and 'Burn', also in 2004. 'OMG' is Will I Am's 10th hit outside of Black Eyed Peas, the biggest being 'Beep', his number 2 collaboration with Pussycat Dolls in 2006.

After a sharp decline last week, this week Gabriella Cilmi's former top 10 hit 'On a mission' is back up a place at 16.

There's good news at last for Pixie Lott; after 5 weeks of continuous climbing, 'Gravity' has finally become her 4th consecutive top 20 hit. It's up 3 places at this weeks number 20 but is still the smallest of her top 40 hits.

Having made chart u-turns last week, the revived interest in 'Don't stop believing' has continued as both versions of the track have climbed again. Journey's version which has peaked at number 6, 29 years after its original release is up 7 places at number 21 on its 18th charting week, and Glee Cast's former number 2 version is up a place at 24 on its 11th charting week. It's interesting to note that Journey's version is now out-selling Glee Cast's version, it having been the other way around for the past 10 weeks.

New at 29 is 'Carry out', a collaboration of Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. It's Timbaland's 15th UK top 40 hit, the last being 'If we ever meet again' which peaked at number 3 in February and is still inside the top 20. Justin Timberlake however has been absent from the chart since April 2009 when 'Love sex magic' peaked at number 5. 'Carry out' is Justin's 17th top 40 hit outside of NSYNC. It's not the first time Justin and Timbaland have worked together, they collaborated on then number 1 hit 'Give it to me' and the number 2 hit 'Ayo technology' both in 2007.

Rounding off this weeks top 30 is Jay Z and Alicia Keys' 'Empire state of mind'. It's climbed back up yet again, now clocking up its 28th week inside the top 40.

There's good news for fans of Mumford and sons; after 3 weeks at number 37, 'The cave' has finally moved up the chart, it's up 5 to a new peak of number 32. Although it is still 8 places shy of the number 24 peak of their only other top 40 hit 'Little lion man' last year, it has already far exceeded its chart longevity and is showing no signs of leaving the chart any time soon.

The final new entry of the week belongs to French house producer and DJ David Guetta and US rapper/singer Kid Cudi. 'Memories' has landed at 38 and is David's 6th top 40 hits, his biggest being the number 1 successes 'When love takes over' and 'Sexy bitch' both in 2009. Kid Cudi's only previous top 40 success was the number 2 hit 'Day 'n' nite' in January of last year.

Leaving the top 40 this week are Cheryl Cole's 'Fight for this love', Sidney Samson's 'Riverside', Ke$ha's 'Tik tok' and Glee Cast's 'True colors'.

Bubbling under the top 40 this week is N-Dubz's 'Say it's over', it's up 43 places at number 50, showing top 40 potential in the coming weeks. Also heading for the top 40 is Alexandra Burke's 'All night long', new at 59.

Next week..........

The latest 'Now that's what I call music' number 75 is out this week, so don't be surprised to see some chart u-turns as buyers cherry pick tracks from the album to download. Tracks that could receive a boost include Lady Gaga's 'Bad romance', 3oh!3's 'Starstrukk', Iyaz' 'Replay', Tinie Tempah's 'Pass out', Timbaland's 'If we ever meet again', Jason Derulo's 'In my head', Rihanna's 'Rude boy', Glee Cast's 'Don't stop believing', Gabriella Cilmi's 'On a mission', Jay Sean's 'Do you remember', Alicia Keys' 'Empire state of mind Part 2', Owl City's 'Fireflies', Journey's 'Don't stop believing', Florence and the machine's 'Dog days are over', Ellie Goulding's 'Starry eyed', Wiley's 'Never be your woman', Gramophonedzie's 'Why don't you', Chiddy Bang's 'Opposite of adults', Young money's 'Bedrock' and McLean's 'My name'.

This weeks physical single releases that could debut in next weeks top 40 are:

Alex Gardner - I'm Not Mad
Joan Armatrading – This Charming Life
Plan B – She Said
Scouting For Girls - This Ain't A Love Song

I hope Marina And The Diamonds album will sell more when the new single gets big, which I'm sure it will.

Nice too see Ludacris - How Low, even if its charting 'low' it could climb :)

And do I need to mention Goldfrapp - the most tragic flop I can recall...
