azul120, starting in mid-1985 Rolling Stone generally published the US top 20 chart in each issue (for timing reasons the chart date trailed behind the magazine issue date by 2-3 weeks), which for RS was every other week, and since they didn't show movement from the previous week there's some guesswork involved to fill in the missing weeks. Plus they published a few "double issues" a year which meant that there were several periods of 3-week gaps between charts. So it isn't the most reliable source, plus for 1989-90 they scaled it back to just listing the top 5 videos, which period may or may not be worth posting I guess.

I'm pretty sure I can fill in the 1992 weeks you're missing although my records end once "End of the Road" reaches #1 in around November '92 I think. I'd love to see anything from 1993 on...definitely looking forward to more of your posts!

I think it's a great idea to set up a central location for people to submit these charts since it doesn't seem like anyone has done it yet on a large scale. Hopefully others might find the thread and keep filling in more gaps.

You know what, you're totally right - I went back and compared against the weeks you listed, and there are certain weeks where I clearly guessed at the positions although the majority of weeks do match up. You obviously have better records for this stretch of time, as I'm trying to work backwards from a continuous year-long graph that I must have made about 15 years ago. It's been so long I must have forgotten I had to fill in some weeks with my best guesses at the time, sorry for the confusion folks!

I'll stick to posting the mid-80's charts where I can confirm that all positions are accurate.

I’m fairly certain that once I started watching these on a weekly basis later that year, reference was made to Simple Minds spending five consecutive weeks at #1 with “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, which run at the top would have preceded the first RS listing above.

In general these early years of the countdown were a lot less predictable than the 90’s – songs would start dropping only to rebound and head back up the chart, debuts as high as #2 (Bryan Adams’ “Run to You”; Huey Lewis & the News’ “Power of Love”), songs debuted in the top 10 only to fail to move any higher, and other weirdness. I guess they were still working out the kinks of whatever formula they used to create their weekly lists (still a mystery to me).

So wait, REM made the countdown back in '85? Wow, that's quite the development there.

And according to one of the "x years ago this weekend..." commercial break flashbacks, "Would I Lie To You?" was apparently #1 for only one week, and spent a total of 11 weeks on the chart. Of course, there were errors at times, most egregriously one which stated that "Heart Shaped Box" from Nirvana was #1, even though it peaked at #2.

Anyways, barring any tie-ups, I will soon begin with what I have of 1992, when things start changing. I will also post a bit of what I have from April and May of '91, though I'm not 100% reliable there.

And I think we should also have another thread for major MTV countdowns, namely the yearly countdowns, which have all been posted elsewhere. (Always found it interesting how many high top 20 videos were low on those, and vice versa.

Yeah, MTV was way ahead of the curve with R.E.M. - "Driver 8" made the Top 20 later in the year and "The One I Love" got all the way to #1 in 1987. They promoted plenty of lousy bands back in the day, but once in a while showed some pretty surprising foresight.

I agree that it would be a better idea to keep year-end charts in a separate thread, especially since as you noted the year-end positions often bore little resemblance to each song's weekly performance.

I'll try to get some more charts from '85 and '86 up over the weekend.

Yeah, I remember they had "The One I Love" on a #1's weekend special. I also know that "Stand" hit the top of the chart. I wonder if "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" and "Orange Crush" ever made the countdown.

One other thing was that there were a couple of #1 debuts: "Oh Sherrie" by Steve Perry and "Dancing In The Dark" by Bruce Springsteen, the latter of which spent only 4 weeks in total on the chart. Also, according to a pre-commercial flashback, "Bad" by Michael Jackson debuted at #7, peaked only at #4, and spent 5 weeks in total on the chart. I'll try getting on '92 shortly.

speaking of Michael Jackson, I remember "The Way You Make Me Feel" only hitting #11 on that countdown, though "Man In The Mirror" and "Dirty Diana" would go to #1.

Really? Whoa. I'd thought it would have reached #2. I'm guessing the video debuted a little too low and too late to make much of a dent.

Were you watching the countdown at that time? If so, how did "Need You Tonight" by INXS and "Faith" by George Michael, for instance, fare? Really interested in some charts if possible.

I seem to remember Faith hitting #1, as did Father Figure. I used to watch it all the time in 87-88 and again in 89-90. Need You Tonight seemed to hit #6 and fell off pretty early, but it peaked on the countdown almost two months before the song itself hit #1, so the video still stayed in heavy rotation for awhile. I do remember "Devil Inside", their followup going to #1.

I'm sure there's others, admittedly we're going back 22 years but I remember watching the countdown every Friday night back then, it was a weekly ritual like listening to Casey Kasem on Sunday evenings.

Actually I remember when one of his later vids was on the countdown, Richard's #1 vids were shown, and they were as follows: "Hold On To The Nights", "Satisfied" (2 weeks at top) and "Right Here Waiting".

I do remember "Don't Mean Nothing" being #1 around August of 1987, remember that MTV also ignored "La Isla Bonita" and the pre-1986 videos when naming Madonna's #1 videos when I remember when "Oh Father" stopped at #5 in December 1989, Adam Curry saying that it was her first video to miss #1 and that the streak had gone back to "Borderline".

Sometimes they are in self-contradiction, though. "Live To Tell" was cited elsewhere as her first #1, and "Crazy For You", according to a pre-commercial break flashback, peaked at #3.

Also, "Faith" by George Michael apparently never reached the top, even though his three subsequent videos did.

Bruce debuting at #1 but only lasting four weeks strikes me as a little crazy even for the first year of the countdown…maybe it was #1 when the first chart was unveiled and they called it a “debut”…? I do remember reading something about Steve Perry’s #1 debut a while ago though. Good stuff!
