I hope all the links work properly - but if anyone ever spots any that don't, do please let me know so that I can correct them! :D

Cool! I will definitely check out some of your year-end charts from the 80s and early 90s - the ones that I haven't commented on - in order to (re)discover some great music from the past :D

Number one twenty-four years ago: STIMMEN IM WIND Juliane Werding
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last month there were four new entries - but three of them haven’t improved on their positions since then, as Alexandra Stan, Karen Bishko and Alexis Jordan remain at 5, 15 and 20 respectively, among nine non-movers. However, the other new entry from May climbs seven places to become my 184th number one - “Anger Never Dies” by Hooverphonic. Having changed their musical style - and their lead singer - since originally forming sixteen years ago, the Belgian group have now had consecutive top five singles in their homeland, this being the follow-up to “The Night Before”, the title track from their latest album. And that’s another of only five songs moving upwards this month, advancing one place to number three. Back in 2000, Ann Lee was at number one and number two in my chart with “Voices” and “Two Times” - and it looked possible that this might be the first time since then that exactly the same act took the top two places. However, slightly helped by a new vocal version of “Gregory’s Theme” - “Live Tonight” - last month’s chart-topper from Basto! lands in between them, falling just one place and completing an all-Belgian top three. The longest laster this month is also a former number one sliding just one place - Yolanda Be Cool and D-Cup are now at 34 with “We No Speak Americano” - while the fastest faller out of twenty other hits dropping down is Armin van Buuren and Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Not Giving Up On Love”, diving ten places to 36. The only other climbers are Sara Bareilles, Caro Emerald and Katie Melua - “King Of Anything” is up four at 25 for the 31-year-old American, the current hit in her homeland for the 30-year-old from the Netherlands rebounds eight places to number 22, while the 26-year-old born in Georgia has the Rapid Riser with “The Flood”, up from 34 to 23.
All of this means that once again there are just four new entries - bringing the total number of hits to exactly 2,500 - and three of them are by acts also placing a new potential hit in the top forty breakers this month. The one who doesn’t is last month’s Chartbuster - continuing the success of Belgian acts this time, Kate Ryan gets her eleventh consecutive top twenty hit, as “LoveLife” arrives at number 18. And a Belgian group has the highest new entry, as dance-punk electro-rockers Goose debut at number nine with the instrumental album title-track “Synrise”. They could follow this up with their previous single, “Words” - not the same song as any others of that title that have reached the chart or the breakers in the past - while Denmark’s Agnes Obel has a second potential hit with “Just So”. Her chart entry is “Riverside” at number 13. And Lady GaGa could now be on the way to my top forty with one of her latest UK chart entries - “The Edge Of Glory”, as well as earlier releases “Dance In The Dark” and “Born This Way”. Her first six hits in my chart have all reached the top ten, but “Judas” has some way to go to match them, scraping in at number 40.
Another remake of an old song returns to the breakers this month - Bob Sinclar teams up with Raffaella Carra on a hit originally recorded in 1976, but which reached the UK top ten two years later, and took even longer for me to find on 7” single. When I did, it entered my chart at number one! More recently, Martin Solveig entered at number one with “Hello” - but can he successfully follow it up with “Ready 2Go”? Also already in my top forty, Sara Bareilles, Pitbull, Alexandra Stan and Yelle add further potential hits - while Ferry Corsten peaked at number two in my chart with “Made Of Love”, and could return with “Feel It”. Yasmin might still be on the way there with “On My Own”, and also now with “Finish Line”, which has been more successful for her in the UK charts this month - and there are only two other new breakers by acts who have never previously impressed me, mainly because I had never heard of them before! One is Lolita, with recent French hit “Joli Garcon” - and the other is my favourite entry from this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Seventy-nine previous entries have reached my chart in the last thirty-two years - and now, as June’s Chartbuster, this one is guaranteed to be the eightieth. Despite receiving a high score from the UK, it finished last in the final, and looks unlikely to chart anywhere other than the country it represented. However, it is currently at number three there - in Switzerland! My Record of the Month for June 2011 is Anna Rossinelli, with “In Love For A While”.
Good chart CZB.
Well the Hooverphonic 'Anger Never Dies'
song is beginning to move a bit more in
the rest of Europe,so it's nice to see
it at #1 in your chart.
Great to see OMD stays a bit
longer in your Top10.
Thanks to everyone for the comments!
Yes, I noticed that the Hooverphonic single was charting in Italy recently - I wonder how much further it can travel? It still seems to be getting a lot of radio airplay in Belgium, even though it is now dropping right down the chart.
Unfortunately, in the last fortnight the Anna Rossinelli single has plummeted right down the Swiss chart: 03 -> 37 -> 63 !
Now then.....
I wrote:Bob Sinclar teams up with Raffaella Carra on a hit originally recorded in 1976
So, the first trip through time with YouTube this month unfortunately has to be somewhat shorter than normal - two hours rather than the usual five and a half or six - as it's all the way back to 1976! Thirty-five years ago, I was eleven years old - and, as far as I remember, wasn't ever listening to music on the radio at all. I doubt that I even saw "Top Of The Pops" on the television - although, of course, those very editions are being repeated at present on BBC FOUR. I was almost certainly not encouraged to do such things - but instead to concentrate on my schoolwork, as "O" levels were only a few years away.....
However, I did discover and buy some records from 1976 in later years. How many? Well, it has been quite difficult and time-consuming to work this out in the last few days - as not only were a lot of tracks designated in my files only as "1976 or earlier", but I discovered that everything allocated to "1977" might as well have been "1977 or earlier", as many of those were actually from other mid-1970s years too! Despite frequently contradictory indications on the internet, I feel that I have now finally identified the "correct" release years for everything that pre-dates my monthly charts - but, as always, if anyone spots anything that still looks wrong, do please let me know.....
In recently preparing the index to my charts, I took a guess that the earliest individual years for which I would be able to put together annual charts of a reasonable length would be 1975, 1976 and 1977 - and indeed this looks to be the case. From 1974 and earlier, less than fifty hits in total have reached the monthly charts - and not many more than that reached the breakers, or "would" have done. I should hopefully just about be able to present a Top 50 of the 1960s and earlier at some point, and also a longer chart combining the first half of the 1970s. But for now, it's the Top 34 (!) of 1976 - the 12 charted tracks from that year, plus the 22 others that I bought.....
Only 34 songs but so many classics: Abba's 3 monster singles from the "Arrival" album, Smokie's biggest hit ever, Boney M's first charttopper, the Eurovision Song Contest winner of that year and my favourite song from the "Evita" musical. :D
Regarding "Ein Bett im Kornfeld", it's the German version of "Let Your Love Flow" by the Bellamy Brothers. I definitely prefer the original, I don't like Jürgen Drews at all. He started his career in the early 70s with the "Les Humphries Singers" which were quite good actually but later he turned into one of the most embarrassing German singers. You still see him on TV from time to time, he's a kind of c-list celebrity who would do anything to get some media attention.
Thanks for all the comments!
This is the one with that long word, yes?
It certainly is - as used at the beginning of the Kenny Everett shows from Thames Television later on the the 1970s, after which it became a hit!
potojr wrote:09 20 02 I'VE NEVER BEEN TO ME Charlene
No idea this was from 1976.
Another of a few songs in this list that charted in the UK or elsewhere upon later re-release - and entered my charts at much the same time! Those also include Red Sovine "Teddy Bear" (which I've just voted for in the 1981 retro thread - the popularity of CB radio around then caused this to resurface at that point) and Smokie's "....Alice", which charted with me much later, at the time of their and Gompie's remakes.
potojr wrote:31 ---- --- MORE MORE MORE Andrea True Connection
Ha, the porn girl! :D
I never knew about that until very recently!!! :o
Something else that I discovered for the first time in researching/checking what years all these earliest releases should go in was that "Mr Walkie-Talkie" (whose track would be recognisable to many in the UK, even though it was never a hit there, as the theme from
Kick Start, the early evening motorcycle-obstacle-course programme) was actually
Drafi Deutscher under yet another name! And I also learned that he wrote another song in my top ten of this year - Tina Rainford's "Silver Bird".
While he was evidently extremely well-known for decades in Germany, however, it struck me that he had probably almost never been seen on UK television.....the only definite instance I can recall being in a clip from It'll Be Alright On The Night in which he stumbled down a staircase while recording a performance of Mixed Emotions' "You Want Love".
potojr wrote:13 ---- --- EIN BETT IM KORNFELD Jürgen Drews
This goes in and the Bellamy Bros original does not?
Benny wrote:Regarding "Ein Bett im Kornfeld", it's the German version of "Let Your Love Flow" by the Bellamy Brothers. I definitely prefer the original, I don't like Jürgen Drews at all.
Your further observations tie in with what I recall of seeing him on German television! I prefer the Bellamy Brothers' original too - but in researching the years, I discovered scans of two different releases of "Let Your Love Flow", both of which were dated 1975 - so that had to make a very belated exit into the prior year. It will turn up there at some point in the months ahead, when 1975 is featured - along with another track which I had also mistakenly included in 1976, right up until this week. Oddly enough, that one was the subject of an almost certainly much more well-known It'll Be Alright On The Night out-take. All will be revealed (well, maybe not as much as accidentally appeared on that occasion ) in a further retro chart.....
Ancient, compared with most here! :D
There was a clue in the introduction to this retro chart:
I wrote:1976! Thirty-five years ago, I was eleven years old....
A while ago, I discovered a website in which you could find out who was the most famous person that was born on the same day as you. In my case, it was at least a name I recognised:
Same here,a product of the late 60's.
Born when 'Abbey Road - Beatles' topped
the Uk Album Chart.
I remember from 1976,that my Auntie
bought the records of that time,and
i had permission to play them on
her record player...Abba was her favourite.
I wrote:Back in 2000, Ann Lee was at number one and number two in my chart with “Voices” and “Two Times” - and it looked possible that this might be the first time since then that exactly the same act took the top two places.
Mindful that the previous retro year selected this month would have to be a considerably shorter chart than usual, I managed (just this once!) to pick alongside it a year with which I knew I would be able to compensate for this to some extent. It's a year in which more singles reached my top forty breakers than almost any other - indeed, only the mid-1990s previously saw my music buying rise to such a high level. I identified no less than 156 potential future hits from this year, and only three of them are not now available on YouTube. That leaves 153 which fitted snugly into a nine-hour marathon for an extended trip back in time today, to the first year of this new millennium - 2000 !
Back then, I was still in the "pre-internet" days (even if others were not!) and most closely in touch with the UK and German charts on television and radio - so the vast majority of my selections here were successes (but not necessarily major ones) in those countries. Much of the top end will look very familiar to regular participants in the 2000/2001 threads in the Retro forum - as almost everything appeared on its playlist, and their actual positions in my all-time ranking (descending month-by-month, as some current hits manage to overtake all but the very highest ones) can be seen there. However, there may be more surprises further down - another reason for extending the feature this time to cover all of the 2000 breakers! Hopefully it's not just a triumph of quantity over quality.....
As far as my monthly top forty charts of the year were concerned, eighty tracks qualified - a much higher total than any year since then, and also surpassing eight out of the ten years of the previous decade. Twelve of them went all the way to number one - including six former Records of the Month - so they must be among the strongest contenders for the top track of the year. Both ATC and Sash! took pole position with two ex-Chartbusters.....and 2000 was not the only year from which there were chart-toppers from Alizee, Dario G, Enya and Ian Van Dahl. Or could my only number ones by Baha Men, Black Box Recorder or Commercial Breakup beat all rivals? Maybe it's a "Victory" for instrumentalists Bond? Without further ado, let's find out!
The Lone Ranger:
The label's MD, Jeremy Thomas, felt that the song "The Lone Ranger" was a potential hit single if only it had something more "interesting" for the intro. Hine picked up on his remark and sang the longest word in the world (listed in The Guinness Book of Records) a capella, replacing the original intro to the song altogether.[1] The word in question, taken from the language of the Maori, New Zealand's indigenous people, was the name of a hill in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. On the record, the word (made to sound as if it were Native American, in keeping with the Lone Ranger and Tonto theme) is chanted as follows:
Taumata-whaka-tangi-hanga-kuayuwo
tamate-aturi-pukaku-piki-maunga
horonuku-pokaiawhen-uaka-tana-tahu
mataku-atanganu-akawa-miki-tora
"The Lone Ranger" was first released as a single in 1976. After it was chosen as Tony Blackburn's "Record of the Week" (the nationwide morning radio show with the highest ratings in the UK at the time), it was banned - some fragments of lyrics were deemed to have "drug" and "homosexual" references. The BBC stopped playing the record and it failed to chart as a result. This, added to disillusion with the length of time it had taken to get the original record deal and the lack of any really cohesive management, resulted in guitarist Mark Warner's decision to leave and join Cat Stevens' live band.
The band would however make an unexpected return two years later, when a re-release of the "Lone Ranger" single became an unexpected hit. The song had been widely played by Kenny Everett on both his radio and TV shows. Re-released in 1979, it eventually reached number 5 in the UK Singles Chart.[2] The band (including Mark Warner) reconvened for an appearance on Top of the Pops.
Great track - as is Alizee for 2000!
I Love You, Richard Parker!
