Yes, I do know what a good album is.
And her previous albums are, but to me, 'Goodbye Lullaby' is like a very diluted version of those albums. Similar sounding material but a lot weaker.

In my opinion, the best albums in the world find a balance between being commercially appealing, and having artistic creativity. Stuff like Lily Allen's "Alright Still" or Red Hot Chili Peppers "By The Way".

Avril's music might have had more artistic input than the likes of Rihanna or Jlo, but if the end result isn't particularly good, or doesn't connect with the public...what's the point?

I'm afraid I have to agree with this!

Avril needs a change of song, and I don't mean just have her jump on the dance bandwagon like everyone else; she needs to give up the whole teenage angst act and bring out something mature - possibly more stripped back - so she could show off her vocals a bit more.

The reason why this didn't catch on was because we've heard this side of her so many times before, and hopefully she realizes that after this era is dead and buried.

It had bad reviews because critics didn't like it and tbh it's not that good :-? Nothing else.

Agree... Many are tired by the image of the punk-rock-princess. I don't want Avril to do stuff by David Guetta but I guess she should go the way like P!nk. M!ssundaztood and Try This were really rebellious and with her comeback in 2006, she showed a different side.
She didn't forget her past but her songs show a grown P!nk with songs about heartbreak (So What), politics (Dear Mr. President) and lost friendships (Who Knew). Still she can make fun songs like Stupid Girls or Funhouse...
Avril should go a similar way...

In contrast to others here, I don't think "Goodbye Lullaby", it's a grower and needs time to get into it.

But Avril is still young and is about to find her way so we shouldn't worry too much.

I disagree. I feel like many of the songs on this album were less "teenage angst" and more mature/stripped back. Her voice has definitely improved (although I find she sounds a bit off on Push).

  WTF.. Tom92 and Col89 have clearly only listened to the Singles...This album is stripped back, raw and MATURE apart from the 2 singles.. It completely shows off her voice so you's should make a judgement after you have actually listened...

Co89. why do i have the feeling you have not even listened to the album in its entirety? it has a lot of stripped vocals. just try the acoustic version of wish you were here. and she has maturity. what you are talking about is clearly based on WTH and Smile.....or else you wouldn't have said that she should leave the whole teenage thing behind her. you talk about maturity? listen to goodbye which is an emotional piece towards her divorce.

You want change.....yet the change you speak off is predominant in the album. clearly you have not given your 2cent worth attention to the album.

however your opinion. will not agree but shall respect.

I think the argument is the single choices. 99% of the people out there haven't actually heard a stripped, raw song from Avril.. they've heard What The Hell and Smile, so as far as they're concerned, Avril is STILL a bratty teenager and won't even go near this album to see that it's not. It's not that she released a bad album, but bad single choices. What The Hell was a nice single, but she should've released Wish You Were Here or Push as 2nd the single THEN released the album

I completely Agree! RCA are renowned for screwing era's up.

However after the Album dropped with lower than expected sales I think it was right to release Smile since its upbeat and Summery... but Yes.. I can't believe the Album was released with only WTH promoted, completely ridiculous considering the Album has a completely different feel.

:o It seems like I have been tarred and feathered for saying Avril should adopt a more stripped back side to her.

As a matter of fact, I have listened to the album in its entirety. I probably should have explained my opinion further, though. The album does contain hints of stripped back vocals in some tracks but, overall, there are still a number of typically-Avril brattish Pop songs on the album that do not do her any well whatsoever. She needs to disassociate herself from that older side of her, and just come back completely with a more stripped back feel. Furthermore, using 'What The Hell' and 'Smile' as the first two singles (probably the two most teenage-y songs on the album!) were massive mistakes for her, and rightfully the album nosedived because of both as they gave the impression that Avril is capable of nothing else but that kind of song.

And, as for those acoustic versions that someone above recommended me listening to, I have already listened to them and they are all well and good, but are they ever going to be totally representational of this whole album? Definitely not. They're merely acoustic songs shoved at the very end of a Deluxe Edition album, which would normally be only bought by big Avril fans themselves.

...Phew.

What's with all the hate with the album? :o :( If Britney didn't release anything this year this would've been my fave album of the year. I love the feel of the album! The single releases are a bit misleading, yes, but you can't deny that both of them are catchy!
On a Wednesday, at a cafe, I watched it begin again.

That's the only song I've liked this era. I never want Avril to grow up

I liked it, too! But I don't think it was a good move to release. She probably should have waited another while to release this album and see what else she could come up with for the first single!

"What The Hell" is so much fun but it just feels really cheap in my opinion. The lyrics are awful and the production is as generic as you can get. She might as well have called it "The Hot 'N' Cold re-hash that my record company made me record to make my dull album a little more commercial".

"Smile" had a great chorus but its production (and video) once again dated it back to around 2004. Other than that, "Wish You Were Here" is beautiful but nothing else on the album is at all memorable. Pleasant? Yes. But that's just about it.

Her image and sound definitely needs renewal but it doesn't help matters when you release an album full of MOR ballads and a couple of Max Martin productions slotted at the beginning to make it easier to sell.

i think the album has not bratty-teenage-angst feeling. otherwise is very light, pleaseant and the melodies are great. it's a great album ;)

I bought this album earlier this week, on the back of the three singles, and I'm glad I did.

I Love You, Stop Standing There and Goodbye are lovely tracks! Especially the first one!

I actually like the fact that the "immature" What The Hell is on the record, gives me all the sides of Avril that I love.

She's become a very nostalgic character in music for me, even though not being a hardcore fan or anything, I sort of feel a deep connection with her music.

Hey Lemo!!! I check the Goodbye Lullaby chart analysis thread everytime I'm here, you must have seen me there sometime! ;) Garf is right, it's a solid album, nothing outstanding, but I really like her voice on this record, it sounds more introvert (but in a good way), and it sounds like she expresses real experiences.

I think I'll end up giving the album a 4/5, but that might be mostly cause of personal nostalgic reasons. I Love You is wonderful!

The main reason I love this album so much is because the songs are sooooo relatable.
