SONGBIRD SUPREME: Top 8
Thank you to those who are still following the countdown. I now reveal numbers 8, 7 and 6!

08. WITHOUT YOU
Release Date: January 23, 1994
Album: Music Box
Writers: Pete Ham, Tom Evans

"Without You" was released as the third single from Music Box. It became Mariah's first single to top the UK charts, and reached the top three in the Billboard Hot 100. Mariah's version is very popular as it has been sung in so many singing competitions all over the world. I never get tired of listening to this song, despite hearing the song almost every day in 1994, when it was released. My favorite performance of "Without You" is the Madison Square Garden performance in the Daydream World Tour.

07. DREAMLOVER
Release Date: July 27, 1993
Album: Music Box
Writers: Mariah Carey, Dave Hall, Walter Afanasieff

"Dreamlover" is the first single released from Music Box. It became her seventh number-one single in the Hot 100, staying there for eight consecutive weeks, becoming her longest-running chart-topper at that time. This is such a feel-good song, something that is more laid-back and easy listening. This still sounds so fresh until now. The music video for this song is the first Mariah video I ever watched.

06. ONE SWEET DAY (with Boyz II Men)
Release Date: November 14, 1995
Album: Daydream
Writers: Mariah Carey, Michael McCary, Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman, Walter Afanasieff

"One Sweet Day" is the second single released from Daydream. It became her tenth number-one single in the Hot 100. It debut at the top spot, becoming Mariah's second single (after "Fantasy") to do so, and stayed at number-one for a record-breaking sixteen weeks, a record the song still holds to date. This song brings back so much memories. It was a huge hit here in the Philippines when I was in first grade, I remember playing the Daydream cassette tape almost every day in our car after school.

And suddenly you're moving fast!

Without You is one of her best!!! Classic! My favorite from Music Box!
Dreamlover is good, i recently appreciate it more.
One Sweet Day is overrated, it's okay. But i think she has other songs which deserve 16 weeks at #1 Hot 100.

Without You was the first song by Mariah I've ever heard. I instantly fell in love with her > became obsessed > and eventually a hardcore lamb.

Dreamlover I never played it that often, tbh. But I love the video!!

One Sweet Day: I remember sitting in front of my TV watching all the music channels, waiting for this to come up next. It's such an amazing song. The video is simple but supports the emotions.

I'm sorry. Without You is a nice song but I find it incredulous that you chose that over the more passionate and breathtaking ballads. Like Vision of Love.

Hero
This is very inspirational and it's a nice ballad but definitely not one of my favorites from her.

Vision of Love
The song that started it all. I listen to this much at all but it's such a great debut single. Everyone recognizes what an impact this song made on younger singers.

Without You
This is a great cover but like the others it doesn't get much play from me. I appreciate what it did for her in Europe though.

Dreamlover
A great lead single! It's cheesy but not to the point where I can't listen to it. I love how she plays with her whistle register in this.

One Sweet Day
This is totally her best duet. Mariah's voice is amazing in this! Boyz II Men really add to the song as well, their voices blend(ed) so well.

SONGBIRD SUPREME: The Final Five
I now reveal the first two songs in the top five. I hope these songs are your faves as well.

05. WE BELONG TOGETHER
Release Date: March 29, 2005
Album: The Emancipation of Mimi
Writers: Mariah Carey, Jermaine Dupri, Manuel Seal, Johntá Austin, Kenneth Edmonds, Darnell Bristol, Bobby Womack, Patrick Moten, Sandra Sully

"We Belong Together" is the second single released from The Emancipation of Mimi. The song became the biggest song of Mariah's (solo) career, peaking at number-one in the Hot 100 for fourteen non-consecutive weeks. It earned her two Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song, as well as nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. I really think that "We Belong Together" is the best song she has ever written amongst her 2000s catalog. Mariah (and her co-writers) fully captured the right elements needed for a break-up theme in this song. The singing style here is different from her usual ballads, the transition from the second chorus to the last chorus (where she sings in a higher octave) is very climactic, and the lyrics are undisguised, heartfelt and touching.

04. BREAKDOWN (featuring Bone Thugs-n-Harmony)
Release Date: March 24, 1998
Album: Butterfly
Writers: Mariah Carey, Anthony Henderson, Charles Scruggs, Stevie J.

"Breakdown" is the third Butterfly single released only in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The song was ineligible to chart in the Billboard Hot 100 due to its status as a non-commercial single. (Only commercially-released singles are allowed to chart in the Hot 100 at that time.) The video (which was directed by Mariah and Diane Martel) is one of Mariah's finest and well-crafted videos. It protrays her in various "casino girl" roles, and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony make an appearance as well. It's one of the many fan favorites from the Butterfly album. The song doesn't get old for me. I can play it the whole day and never get tired of it. The song has straightforward, cleverly-written lyrics that flows through a sultry and relaxing melody. I also like how she incorporated the chirping of the birds in the background.

We Belong Together
I don't care how overrated people may say this is, this song is EPIC! From the production to the lyrics and obviously the vocals, everything is perfect.

Breakdown
This is one of the highlights of Mariah's career IMO. It shows how she really wanted her music to be like back then. It still sounds fresh to this day, she needs to experiment with more raw hip-hop like she did back then.

Breakdown is AMAZING.

I used to listen to it & wonder, "What on earth do people see in this song?" ... but one day it just clicked.

We Belong Together's 14 weeks-at-#1 chart run says it all, really.

03. ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU
Date Release: November 1, 1994
Album: Merry Christmas
Writers: Mariah Carey, Walter Afanasieff

"All I Want for Christmas Is You" is the lead single released from Merry Christmas. It became one of Mariah's most famous songs in her career. The song also became the nineteenth-best-selling digital single of the 20th century, the highest-charting entry by a female or holiday song on the list. "All I Want for Christmas Is You" has been covered by many artists since its release, but Mariah's version has always remained the most popular. The song is a classic, it captures the festive and happy mood of the holiday spirit. Mariah and Walter did an excellent job in creating this masterpiece.

I discovered this song very late.. I think it must have been 1997-2000 (can't recall anymore)... really! It was a coincidence when I heard it on the radio and I was so shocked because the song went right in my heart...

It's my favourite christmas song of all times..

Nice to see "Without You" so high. It's one of her best ballads of the 90's. "One Sweet Day" is also quite epic and :o at "We Belong Together" not being #1! Another :o at "All I Want For Christmas Is You" being so high! I think the song's fantastic - easily the best Christmas song and it's totally deserving of its Top 3 placement. Can't wait to see what your Top 2 are! :)

02. ALWAYS BE MY BABY
Date Released: March 9, 1996
Album: Daydream
Writers: Mariah Carey, Jermaine Dupri, Manuel Seal, Jr.

"Always Be My Baby" is the third U.S. released single from the Daydream album. It topped the charts for two weeks in 1996, becoming her eleventh number-one single in the U.S., and spent a total of nine non-consecutive weeks at number two, the fourth longest stay in that position in the history of the Hot 100. The song is considered as one of Mariah's signature songs. I love this song so much, it has this feel-good audience-friendly vibe and optimistic lyrics as opposed to the theme, which is about a lover who is leaving the song's protagonist. I also love the overlapping vocals (as well as the background singing) in this song, and the "do do doot" part makes the song so catchy.
