My condolnces joiPrince_JO!

I read your post early in the morning before listening to Carry yesterday, and I don't know if it was because of what you wrote - but I began to get these horrible pictures in my head. One of my absolute best friends (my soulmate) is alot older than me, so I started imagining my life without him, it was terrifying!

Love to see more people discovering this album, it really is amazing from start to finish. Any favourite tracks joiPrince?

RaFanatic - I'm also listening now with you! 8-) Was not sure what you meant with 2:15, quite an interesting section you selected. Just wait and see what's in store for you, there's some absolute epic instrumental moments throughout the album (I'd say every second of it).

I discovered the true essence of Fearlessness this weekend. I liked it from the beginning, but it turned out to be as strong as Star Whisperer now. The piano in this track gets me really deep, and her vocals. There's this specific melody which awakens the Tori from Boys For Pele. 2:41 and 2:44 especially.

Yeah RaFanatic! I also love that her daughter sings on some of the tracks, SnowBlind has a mysterious tone, almost dangerous.

Mattsky. I think those 3 albums have sounded close to perfect, a few fillers on every record, but since the amount of tracks have been so high, the good songs mean much more. The Posse and Abnormally albums are better than Little Earthquakes and To Venus And Back, maybe even Under The Pink - if only 2-4 songs could've been excluded (from ADP & ATTS).

Posse? That's her worst album yet. LE, TVAB and UTB are amazing.

The lyrics, ahh!!! Do you understand any of them? She is usually very cryptic with some of her lyrics, at least from the 5 latest albums. That's another thing I love very much with this woman - there's always alot of space left for imagination and to self interpret the lyrics.

Cactus Practice along with Job's Coffin are slightly "hooky", compared with the other tracks. Yeah, agree, there is such a synchronized rhythm when they sing together.

I am curious to read your thoughts on Star Whisperer and Your Ghost :o The lyrics to both tracks struck me! Two completely different tracks.

Mattsky! :o American Doll Posse is sacred to me! I'm in love with how she went all pop/rock comercial sounding with that one. Even worse than The Beekeeper?

Not saying that any of her albums are bad, but the recent albums does not deserve the hatred they get, in my opnion!

Yeah, Beekeeper is better. I like and own all of her albums but Posse is the worst one IMO. Scarlet's Walk, Little Earthquakes and Boys For Pele are my favorites.

"And I heard you scream, from the other side of the mountain"

Wow! I'm listening to it now and getting into this surreal rave landscape of piano and violins. It took me a handful of listens to finally understand it though. Let's hope you'll discover its beauty eventually. I can't deal with myself being nervous about your veridict of this album!

I agree with Scarlet's Walk and Boys For Pele being part of her best material! Then again, I love her whole discography.

Well you know, this is such a beautiful music, really. Her voice, instrumental, lyrics... Everything's just absolutely wonderful but i just cant picture myself listening to this randomly(except Shattering Sea and now Your Ghost).

And, i just adore Your Ghost! Fantastic track! My second favorite 8-)

Interview with DigitalSpy

Tori Amos interview: 'It's magical when people embrace your work'

"I knew the dangers... do I wanna take the chance?" Tori Amos says. "Then the naughty fairy on my shoulder said, 'What a cop-out. I used to respect you'. So, I had to take up the challenge!" When she puts it like that, it's easy to see why the singer-songwriter couldn't wimp out when a classical music label approached her to do a record.

The successful result was Amos's 12th album Night of Hunters - a dense, original and multi-layered work which plays with the classics through a modern prism. We got on the phone to ask her all about it.

How would you describe your new album?

"It's a 21st century song cycle, it's based on classical themes. Deutsche Grammophon approached me and asked me if I would do this kind of project. That was the beginning."

Do you think other artists would gain from looking beyond rock 'n' roll for influences?

"There's a richness to the old works if you look before the 1950s. The chord progressions and the language was more complicated, especially in the jazz and classical world. You listen to the radio once in a while and you think, 'Hang on a minute, that sounds a bit like a song I heard three weeks ago?'. A lot of songs are derivative of each other. Sometimes you need to take a departure from what you do to something that's slightly different in order to get inspiration."

Do you prefer writing concept-heavy, character-driven records?

"I like involved projects. I'm driven by the idea of characters and the song-cycle form is similar to a musical. I've been working on the musical [The Light Princess at the National Theatre] now it seems like for 5,000 years and that has informed my work. I've been studying narrative now for over five years by doing the musical. I don't think I could have done it had I not been having on-the-chop training with the musical crowd."

Are you worried by the way people download music as single MP3s today?

"People listen to music the way they want to listen to music. Doing something like this where the songs are interconnected, you can listen out of sequence - but it'll take on a different meaning than when you take the journey. It's sort of a sonic film. I thought it could be interpreted by a dance company. It could be Rite of Spring by Stravinsky - it is a story that happens."

How is it different working with Deutsche Grammophon to major pop labels?

"The difference is you don't approach them - they approach you. They won't just put out anything on their label. It has to fit a certain criteria. Similar to Def Jam... this is the mother of all rap labels but for the classical world!

"I thought I may never get this opportunity ever again in my life. And I thought, 'Oh my gosh, this is such a tall order'. It's not a little project, it's not a side project. If you get it wrong, you get it so wrong you just want to find the Devil and say, 'Make me a Hobbit and I'll go live under a rock for the rest of my life'. You could never show your face again!"

The reviews have been really positive; is that something you care about these days?

"I don't seek them out because you have to imagine, [my 1996 album] Boys for Pele was not reviewed kindly. That was a time when I didn't have the discipline about reading reviews that I have now. I had to learn on the job that you have to stay focused. You've made the work that you've made you've made the choices that you've made and you can't reflect about it while you're performing."

Why not?

"That is not the time for reflection, when you're taking stage. You're in pieces and when you turn yourself inside out, you start becoming what everyone wants you to become. A lot of times that's the diluted version. So, no, I don't seek out reviews, but you get a sense of what's happening. You know if something's being received warmly or of it's being received medium or cold. But let's not kid each other - it's always magical when people are embracing your work."

Your covers album Strange Little Girls came out ten years ago this week - would you ever do a similar record?

"It's not that I'm not interested in it, but you have to be careful when you do these projects like that. In a way this is the classical version of Strange Little Girls - but it's Strange Little Dead Girls, right?"

A fan of yours once told us that your 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was the definitive version - do you agree?

"I can't agree with something like that! The original version was so moving and was so good. The piano seemed to trick me and say, if you could just look at the song itself... it is the anthem for a generation, yes, but it has the possibility to be 'Yesterday' by The Beatles. It really does! The song sort of winked and said 'There's a lot to me, you know'. And I said, 'Okay, let's investigate it'. The song was such a good song and so well-written that it could handle more than one arrangement."

Adele has sold so many records, and PJ Harvey just won the Mercury Prize. How do you feel about the success of British solo female artists this year?

"I think it's exciting that such talented women are doing so well. I think it's an important message for other women that are up-and-coming."

You and Neil Gaiman have a long-held friendship and artistic relationship - how do you feel about HBO's upcoming adaptation of American Gods?

"Well, I'm a bit biased towards that one because it was written partly at the beach house in Florida, and he is just one of my favourite people in the universe. He's a spiritual brother to me and has always been. We're really close friends and yet I have great respect for his talent. So I'm thrilled. I love all his work, but American Gods was something I remember reading before it came out and I thought this is one of those stories that people will reread for a long, long time to come."

Did you see his episode of Doctor Who ['The Doctor's Wife'] earlier this year?

"[My daughter] Natashya doesn't miss an episode, she knows them all. She showed it to me and of course I thought it was great. She said, 'Look, Uncle Neil's episode was the best. They should have had him write the whole series this year because his portrait of the TARDIS, you can't beat that'."

Tori Amos's new album Night of Hunters is out now.

RaFanatic - do you mean because of the classic tone? I understand. Maybe this just isn't the Tori album for you, since it's beatless etc.

Well maybe that is the reason. I really think this is a wonderful piece of work and i definitely will check her previous albums(can you tell me just which ones are the best?) because i love what im hearing, still. It's always amazing to meet new artists, their music and everything. So, thank you so much for this :)

You're welcome buddy! Happy to see you enjoying it though, not that I'm trying to convince you to love this, I'm just saying that... This kind of music is not as instant for persons who usually listen to "un-acoustic only" music, plus it has an old-fashioned tone. I suggest you play Star Whisperer with very loud and on great speakers, and just close your eyes, and give it another try! It will top my personal chart this week for sure. :) Hope that you'll find some more time and discover more from Night Of Hunters.

Check her thread in the General Artist forum soon, and I'll post some songs from another of her albums which I think might suit you better.

Fully agree with you! Discovering new artists, especially artists that set them apart from others and that can inspire in their unique way... that's like being recieved sparkling gold.

I can't get enough of this record! Repeating it for the sixth time tonight! I just read that she'll bring a string quartet with her on the tour, that's the first time.

She's visiting Copenhagen two nights in a row (instead of Sweden for some reason) - and I'm going to attend both of them! It's going to be a memorable weekend!

Star Whisperer, Your Ghost, Carry and Fearlessness are my favourites at the moment.

NOH is doing badly... well, there wasn't buzz and the first single is not a radio-friendly as "Welcome To England". We shouldn't expect anything at all. :(

Daniel, you keep posting lyrics and praising the songs, I'm sooooooo curious about this project!

I was not expecting great sales either, but I was hoping for a US top 10 peak. The great thing is that this is her best reviewed album since Scarlet's Walk, the majority are really praising this album - which is what she needed. Soon, she'll kick of her tour - and that I think is more important for her than sales.

I'm not finished with this album, expect more from me here! :D Can't wait for you to receive the album!

I think at this point she doesn't have to care about chart positions/sales anymore and neither does her label. They're a classical label, sales are usually rather low in that genre.

Of course! You're right, but I think she was one of very few female artists that had achieved a certain amount of Billboard top ten albums - or something like that, so I was hoping for a new one.

I'm still repeating this album day and night. I love closing my eyes, listen from start to the end, and imagine this woman in the lyrics. It's very inspiring.

I would like to have a second promotional single too! Just something to keep the album alive, except from the tour. Why not Cactus Practice or Shattering Sea? :)

I'm sure the album will go Top 10, Tori's fanbase + rave reviews should really help!

I would love a proper, promoted single with live performances on TV. Shattering Sea or Edge Of The Moon for me!
