"A massive pop record" - that's quite how I felt for The Family Jewels. I think someone mentioned Ray Of Light when Fear And Loathing had been released, I'm becoming to understand that comparison. As long as there is interesting lyrics, then I'll be satisfied. Her singing is also haunting. Plus - Radioactive is a really good song.

This will be interesting!

DigitalSpy interview:
Did Stargate allow you much control over the tracks you recorded with them?
"Definitely! They're very self-aware individuals and very supportive. People like them and Dr Luke get a lot of flack, but I found them very inspiring. They insisted that they didn't want me to change my singing or writing style. They worked with me rather than against me. It was great! They're not d**kheads - I've got nothing but love for them."

So you've worked with Dr Luke too; who else?
"I can't say! I worked with four producers on this album. Liam Howe, who worked on my last album, produced 'Fear and Loathing' and a few more. That's all I'm saying!"

We heard your next single was 'Fear and Loathing' - is that right?
"No! Total lies - that song is definitely on the album, though. The new single sounds completely different to 'Radioactive' - it's very pop with the same cold feeling as 'Fear and Loathing'. Sorry, I'm really bad at this. It will all reveal itself very, very soon!"

I'm so surprised Marina went with Stargate and Dr Luke.

She tweeted a new demo last night. It's quite good. Sounds like old Marina, not the Radioactive one.

Dr Luke & Stargate!? she's selling out! she had a little bit quirk before, now shes turning into another generic singer. how dissapointing.

I think Hype was being ironic, ala Marina with the entire Electra Heart business (at least I hope so!).

STARRING ROLE (DEMO)

Love it! Very Marina but also fairly commercial production.

Very disappointed with Starring Role, after one listen.

If it wasn't for her voice, it would sound dull and pointless, except from the clinkety clonks going on in the background in the verses - which are the only thing I enjoyed with it.

I actually think Radioactive is more Family Jewels Marina than this, because Starring Role sounds like a typical modern pop tune where too much stuff is going on and there's no space for the music to breathe.

I think she has one of the best voices ever in music, hopefully she'll use it for better songs than this.

 :(

Starring Role is OK. What Vin said is pretty accurate. There's not much that's unique or distinctive about it.

'Starring Role' is brilliant. Quite generic production-wise but her voice and the gritty lyrics save it from being generic.

Tell us a bit about your new alter-ego Electra Heart?
'It's not an alter-ego per se, but more a vehicle to explore identity and female archetypes. People think it's a character but it's a way to explore different personas, which I wouldn't have been able to do just as Marina.'

So Electra embodies more than one person...
'Yes, I don't even feel like she's either male or female but I had to give it a name. I've split it into four archetypes because I want to do an exhibition. I've got The Homewrecker, a section called SuBarbiea, Teen Idols and Wasted Youth, and Starlets and Pin Ups.'

Did your time in America after the first album's release inspire the idea?
'YeahI recorded most of the album in America so definitely. I'm kind of obsessed with oblivion and having a massive void inside you. America in a way symbolises that for me because you can run away from whoever you are, which I love the idea of. In order to find out who you are it's good to become someone you're not.'

How is this album different from the first?
'This one's quite a jump sonically speaking. Musically it's better but I guess we'll have too see what people think before I go slinging around praise for it. This is more of an ambitious album and has a dance feel. I've collaborated a bit with Diplo and although it's not a 'banger' album, it'll make you feel happy.'

Does the role of image make the Marina and the Diamonds a more cohesive whole?
'Very much so and I feel this time around the image has inspired the sound more. The first record i didn't think about the style and videos whereas this time I wanted a really strong image.'

How do you bring Electra Heart to life in the live shows?
'I want people to know it's me trying on different hats all the time, so it's not going to be one person for the whole campaign like a David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust alter-ego. I'm playing four different characters in one night.'

I want this album so bad, can't get enough of Starring Role! I'm guessing the label is gonna be putting focus on Little Boots rather than Marina after Radioactive undeservedly underperformed :-?

What focus? They've just gone and abandoned both Marina and Boots.

I'm worried about this album, from the given descriptions from Marina.

Didn't Tori Amos do the same thing, almost, on her American Doll Posse album?
