I don't know! I used to dislike most of the songs but now I think this is a great, very melodic pop record.

Maybe it's an "age-thing"? It was the first Tori Amos album I bought and I fell instantely in love with Parasol, The Power Of Orange Knickers, Sleeps With Butterflies, Original Sinsuality & the title track.

The rest of the album remained a dull mystery to me up until last summer, when I listened to the tracks in a much more mature way I think. Cars And Guitars was the song that made me understand the side of the album which I had not grasped earlier.

I have not fallen for Toast yet, although being a favourite amongst many fans. Then there's possibly Tori's possibly worst song on this track, Ireland?

Yeah, Ireland is the weakest track. Parasol, Original Sinsuality, Sweet The Sting & the title track are still my favorite tracks.

Tori is doing quite well in the current Album Clash, I could never predict her getting so many votes. Go over to the Games section and support her, everyone who likes the new album! :)

Everyone who is not very familiar with Tori Amos live performances, check this one out:

Father Lucifer (Live on David Letterman, 1996)

I think she's a very brave woman, in different ways.

joiPrince!

Why not listen to either Under The Pink or Boys For Pele? Both regarded as some of her best material, rightfully so!

Under The Pink focuses a lot on piano and strings, while Boys For Pele has a more varied sound with more beats and complex soundscapes. Both driven by extremely personal and touching lyrics. You could pick either one of them, my favourite from those two is Boys For Pele.

The songs she performed on David Letterman is a Pele track, here's a few other tracks from that album:

1. Caught A Lite Sneeze

(released as a single, awesome production and passion)

2. Marianne

(this track is really powerful, the lyrics are of great importance as always, but how the song goes up and down is just amazing)

3. Beauty Queen/Horses

(my second Tori track ever, I was hooked immediately)

4. Hey Jupiter

(one of her most important tracks maybe? she used to always end her concerts with this track, fan favourite + there's a Dakota version with beats in it - equally amazing)

5. Twinkle

(one of her best, short, simple, about saying farewell in a way... the lyrics are heartbreaking

There's quite a few upbeat tracks on this album as well, but I only posted one of them. Some crazy Tori tracks! The artwork, the lyrics, the passion, the vocals, the production - this is a 5/5 album! Undoubtedly!

You're welcome! So glad you like it! :)

I ended up repeating Twinkle because of that post. I endured a long period of internal pain and creatively destructive ideas, Twinkle was one of the songs that put everything I felt into words, at least in my experience of the song.

"And I'm sure, said I'm sure, she's watching it to"

2:32 - 2:39 is such a short but explosive sequence of emotions:

"But I can see that star
When she twinkles, and she twinkles
Cause I sure can
That means
I sure can
That means
I sure can.. Mhm..

So hard
So hard"

One thing with Tori's lyrics is that the majority of them are very hard to fully understand, which in fact is'nt needed. I have always reacted to, or picked out, certain lines by which words are used or how she sings them - and then made up my own experience/interpreation of the songs.

Since they usually are quite cryptic or just mad, they allow the listener to do that, when on the other hand, it's often easier to get the full picture of a song in contrast to understanding individual sentences.

I think I do this with all artists though, but Tori's lyrics are extremely fun to "work" with!

Oh God! It seems I have not listened to Boys For Pele in a looooooong while.

"Tuna, rubber, a little blubber in my igloo"

Everyone! Read the lyrics for Marianne:

"Tuna
Rubber
A little blubber in my igloo
And I knew you pigtails and all
Grils when they fall
And they said Marianne killed herself
And I said not a chance
Don't you love the girls ladies babes
Old bags who say she was so pretty why
Why why why did she crawl down in the old
Deep ravine

C'mon pigtails girls and all those sailors
Get your bags and hold down won't you just
Hold down cause Ed is watching my every sound
I said
They're watching my every sound

The weasel squeaks faster than a seven day week
I said Timmy and that purple Monkey
Are all down
At Bobby's house
Making themselves pesters and lesters and jesters an dmy
Traitors of kind
And I'm just having thoughts of Marianne
She could outrun the fastest slug
She could
Marianne
Quickest girl in the frying pan
And I'm just having thoughts of Marianne"

One thing I don't like about Boys For Pele is the fact that I can't really relate to the lyrics just because they are really cryptic and hard to understand.

Yes they are! I realized that I had to use my imagination to the fullest to connect with the tunes, and it worked. I hope the album will grow on you!

I think the lyrics to the album Under The Pink are a bit more similar to Night Of Hunters. They are definietly easier to interpret than those from Pele.

My obsession with time signatures has led me to a special discovery! :o Some nuggets I found:

"God" by Tori Amos - contains 7/4, 2/4 and others

"Spark" by Tori Amos - mostly 6/8; often changes to 7/8 and once to 9/8

"Datura" by Tori Amos - contains, in order of occurence, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, 8/8 and 4/4

"Spring Haze" by Tori Amos - alternates between 4/4 and 3/4, then goes to 6/8 and back. Also contains 7/8

"Carbon" by Tori Amos - switches frequently between 6/8 and 7/8, particularly in the verses

"Barons of Suburbia" by Tori Amos uses many different time signatures in 8ths: 4/8, 5/8, 6/8 (majority of the song), 7/8 and 9/8.

"Witness" by Tori Amos has 12/16 and 5/16 bars in the verses.
(I can't hear this one, is it incorrect? To me it sounds like 4/4)

"Blood Roses" by Tori Amos - mostly 6/8; contains 15/16, 9/16, 7/8,

"Professional Widow" by Tori Amos - mostly in 4/4; includes 3/4 and 5/4

"Garlands" by Tori Amos uses 12/16 and 9/16

I have to thank Bjork for educating me and making me see just how talented Tori is too.

"Under The Pink" was the soundtrack of 1994 for me. I mean I had played "Crucify" and "Silent All These Years" to death back in 1991 but I never got to buy her debut back then (got it much later). When "Cornflake Girl" came out, it also became a big favourite but it was after "Past The Mission" I actually bought the tape and (years later) the cd. That album is pure perfection. "Bells For Her" is my all-time favourite song by her. Aaaah those were the times

That must've been such a memorable part of your life. Did you not like the albums that followed Under The Pink?

Do you mean "aaahh those were the times" as in her music not being as interesting to you anymore? Listen to the new album! :) It brought be back to those early Tori records.

Bells For Her

Lyrics

"and through the life force and there goes her friend
on her Nishiki it's out of time
and through the portal they can make amends

hey would you say whatever we're blanket friends
can't stop what's coming
can't stop what's on its way

and through the walls they made their mudpies
I've got your mind I said
she said I've your voice
I said you don't need my voice girl
you have your own
but you never thought it was enough of
so they went years and years
like sisters blanket girls
always there through that and this
there's nothing we cannot ever fix I said

can't stop what's coming
can't stop what's on its way
Bells and footfalls and soldiers and dolls
brothers and lovers she and I were
now she seems to be sand under his shoes
there's nothing I can do
can't stop what's coming
can't stop what's on its way

and now I speak to you are you in there
you have her face and her eyes
but you are not her
and we go at each other like blank ettes
who can't find their thread and their bare

can't stop loving
can't stop what is on its way
and I see it coming
and it's on its way"
I have no words. This track is dangerous. The lyrics..

Those were the times was going to the fact that just listening to the Top 40 was enough to discover so many great artists (unlike now when u have to do a lot of research)...

Well I do like her still but I kinda stopped buying her stuff after "The Choirgirl Hotel" album. I prefer Tori with less rather than more instrumentation, her voice is so amazing. OK "Carry" does not have a lot of instrumentation but it's not the kind of song which would make me crazy about her again, it kinda sounds like an OK album track
