The time has come to honor the songs we will hear next year at the Olympics-- the national anthems of the world! I'm going to compile a list of all the anthems that are on youtube for people to check out. If there is any country that you want to be sure is not forgotten, mention it here!

The game will begin this weekend.

What about Wales or Scotland anthems, which played before football or rugby matches? Are they count?

I have no objection to including them, especially since Scotland and Wales have their own Parliaments these days.

Good.
Next questions: Which versions of anthems: with lyrics or without (only melody)?

And what about anthems of old countries? (Simples: Soviet Union or Yugoslavia)

I will link versions with lyrics. Only current countries will be included, so Yugoslavia and Soviet Union are out. South Sudan is in.

And England?

I suppose, as usual, we'll get the dreary God Save The Queen ~ which is actually the national anthem of the UK :-?

There's actually no official national anthem for England :o

Following a public vote last year, Team England's anthem at the 2012 Olympic Games will be Jerusalem ~ it was up against God Save The Queen and Land Of Hope And Glory (which would have been my choice).

Jerusalem is the most obvious one if you want to put one in specifically for England. Can't be "Rule Brittania" as that's another British one - and I'd say people would more think of "Jerusalem" than "Land Of Hope And Glory"

Of course, you could pick this song as the English national anthem!

Two more issues to discuss before I start this game

1. Should we vote by continent/ area (Europe, Asia, Africa, SA, NA, Oz/Oceania) or just in aggregate?

2. Should voting be public or in private by PM?

I am worried if we vote in public, we may get the Eurovision effect where people vote in blocs to save their favorite country.

I am open to others' views as I decide these two issues.

Lists will begin to appear tomorrow.

1. I'd say by continent (for example, 1 North America/South America/Oceania and 2 Europe/Africa/Asia per round) until there's a reasonable amount left, then make it aggregate.

2. Doesn't matter either way for me.

1. Choose the countries randomly, not too many at once, maybe 5 at once. Randomly to get an equal spread of familiar and unfamiliar hymns. I would not bother to listen to all African hymns at once, because I know none and it would be way too much effort.

2. Make two votings each round: one public for distractions and one private. The private counts double. Nah, just kidding. I'm dispassionate about it.

England should participate with all of the above!! Love them all. Also, I would love to see the Soviet Union participate.

Also, make the game slow, make it last until next Summer, because we should take the time to appreciate them one by one and have some rest between them because I predict that some are hard to digest.

My thoughts here:
1. Aggregate
2. I don't know

about 'save their favorite or home country' Why not?

about time of the game: not fast, but not very slow.
Finish it in late December 2011. Two monthes would be enough.

chun1702@ Soviet Union anthem was epic, maybe in my top 2 with United States anthem.

I may do a version of this-- for example, tomorrow, I'll post all the North America anthems for people to listen (but not vote yet). Then, I'll do South America, etc.

This game we need some time to listen to the anthems. otherwise, it just becomes a "Favorite Country" game, which is not my intent (though I suspect dictatorships like North Korea won't do well regardless)

^ Yeah, it's a great hymn. omg there will be about 180 anthems right? In two months that means listening to 6 anthems per day. That's too much for me.

Why so many?
I'm not sure, than anybody want listen anthems of Burundi or Pakistan (for simple)

List must be full Europe + very famous countries (Japan, China, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) + countries, which is home for anybody person on UKMix (India, Argentina, Brasil...)

I think it'll be more fun with every anthem included, honestly. :)

I am going to include all UN countries. I think it'd be unfair and, frankly, racist, to leave out Africa and much of South America.

I think it will be an exercise in nationalism (i.e. everyone voting for their own hymns and everyone for America's which is the most well known because of films). It's kinda pointless to have 4 entries for the UK I think and btw what about Kosovo? It's kinda debatable if it's a recognized country or not

PS: I might be able to save you some time. Don't look for Cyprus' national hymn, we don't have one

Kosovo is definitely UN recognised. I'd say also you definitely have to have that national anthems of the UK nations - this is UKMix after all. :)

86 countries currently recognize Kosovo, including most NATO members and the homelands of most UKMIXers, including the UK itself, so I'd say it should definitely go in.

Em not really. 86 countries is under half of the countries of the world, China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Russia (7 of the 10 most populous countries including its top 2) do not recognize it which means that the majority of world population doesn't recognize it either, not all EU countries recognize it so it cannot be considered as a state by the EU (requires consensus) and not all UN Security Council permanent member states recognize it which means it cannot enter the UN. So it is not a recognized state, in my opinion. Majorities in NATO and the EU mean nothing, unless you take the approach that only North America and Europe count

Isn't the Russian anthem the same as the Soviet one but without words?
