Song #: 210
Title: The Sweetest Embrace
Artist: Barry Adamson/Nick Cave
Year: 1996
Available on: Oedipus Schmoedipus
UK Chart peak: n/a

Clip: The Sweetest Embrace

Notes:

Barry Adamson and Nick Cave - two acts that I know a little about. I reckon I shall have to dust off their back catalogue and listen to more. This is a splendid track from one of Adamson's solo albums. Adamson was in splendid band called Magazine before recording four albums with Nick Cave's Bad Seeds.

Our time is done my love
We've laid it all to waste
One thousand moonlit kisses can't
Sweeten this bitter taste
My desire for you is endless
And I'll love you 'til we fall
I just don't want you no more
And that's the sweetest embrace of all

To think we can find happiness
Hidden in a kiss
Ah, to think we can find happiness
That's the greatest mistake there is
There is nothing left to cling to babe
There is nothing left to soil
I just don't want you no more
And that's the sweetest embrace of all

Oooohhh where did it begin
When all we did was lose
There's nothin' left to win

So lay your weapons down
They serve no purpose in your hands
And if you wanna hold me
Then go ahead and hold me
I won't upset your plans
If it's revenge you want
Then take it babe
Or you can walk right out the door
I just don't care anymore
And that's the sweetest embrace of all

Oooohhh where did it begin
When all we did was lose
There's nothin' left to win

It's over babe
And it really is a shame
We are losers you and me babe
In a rigged and crooked game
My desire for you is endless
And I love you most of all
I just don't want you no more
And that's the sweetest embrace of all

He has loads of albums and I have only skimmed a couple of them. I have been thinking about have a proper dig through his catalogue.

I'll have to check the spreadsheet butI think there are a couple more of his songs to come.

Destroy Rock n' Roll
Invocation for Judgement Against and Destruction of Rock Music
Notes:

"Destroy Rock & Roll" is a song by British electronic musician Mylo.

The track was produced by Mylo. It contains samples of "Invocation for Judgement Against and Destruction of Rock Music", a 1984 recording by religious organization Church Universal and Triumphant. The original recording heavily condemns rock music, and many popular artists from the 1980s; it appears on a release entitled The Sounds of American Doomsday Cults.

Samples from the afromentioned recording make up the entirety of the song's vocal track. "Destroy Rock & Roll" begins with a sample of a severe voice condemning "all perversions of the third eye through distorted and exaggerated images, perverted movements of the body and breakdancing and other forms of dancing." The same voice calls for "the destroying of rock music directed specifically against children through the videos that were portrayed," and "working specifically through" certain individuals. The voice also calls for "the judgement of the sacred fire on this hour before the throne of Almighty God" through these individuals.

hey honey what you trying to say
as i stand here
don't you walk away
and the world comes tumbling down
hand in hand in a violent life
making love on the edge of a knife
and the world comes tumbling down
and it's hard
for me to say
and it's hard
for me to stay
i'm going down
to be by myself
i'm going back
for the good of my health
and there's one thing
i couldnt do
sacrifice myself to you
sacrifice
baby baby i just can't see
just what you mean to me
i take my aim and i fake my words
i'm just your long time curse
and if you walk away
i can't take it
but that's the way that you are
and that's the things that you say
but now you've gone too far
with all the things you say
get back to where you come from
i can't help it
under the april skies
under the april sun
sun grows cold
sky gets black
and you broke me up
and now you won't come back
shaking hand, life is dead
and a broken heart
and a screaming head
under the april sky

Title: Ain't That a Lotta Love
Artist: Taj Mahal
Year: 1968
Available on: The Natch'l Blues / Rolling Stones Rock'n'Roll Circus

Clip: Ain't That A Lot Of Love

Notes:

I *guarantee* you'll like this.

Wiki:
Henry Saint Clair Fredericks (born May 17, 1942), who uses the stage name Taj Mahal, is a Grammy Award winning blues musician. He incorporates elements of world music into his music. A self-taught singer-songwriter and film composer who plays the guitar, banjo and harmonica (among many other instruments),[2] Mahal has done much to reshape the definition and scope of blues music over the course of his almost 50 year career by fusing it with nontraditional forms, including sounds from the Caribbean, Africa and the South Pacific.

Ain't that a lot of love

I know the desert could hold all the love that i feel in my heart for you
Just like the ocean that started to roll, my love it could be coming to you
Ain't that a lot of love for one heart to hold
Ain't that a lot of love for one heart to hold

If the cook in the kitchen had a touch as hot as yours, it wouldn't need a fire
I can't think of a word that describes you better than indescribable
Ain't that a lot of love for one heart to hold
Ain't that a lot of love for one heart to hold

If the bees only knew how sweet you were, darling, they would shut up their honey comb
If the birds could hear how sweet your voice is, they'd pack up and fly away
Ain't that a lot of love for one heart to hold
Ain't that a lot of love for one heart to hold

Notes:

"Somewhere In My Heart" is a fantastic pop song. I added "Spanish Horses" because it nearly made the list and because the clip is a fantastic piece of guitar playing.

Notes:

Aztec Camera were a Scottish New Wave band from Glasgow, formed in 1980 and centered around the then teenage singer-songwriter, Roddy Frame.

The band's line-up changed numerous times in its first few years. By the time of their third album, Love (1987), Frame was the only de facto member of the band: this and future albums credited to Aztec Camera were actually performed by Frame and studio musicians hired on a track-by-track basis.

"Somewhere in My Heart" is the twelfth single and biggest hit by the Scottish band Aztec Camera. It was released as the third single from their 1987 studio album Love.

Summer in the city where the air is still
A baby being born to the overkill
Who cares what people say
We walk down love's motorway

Ambition and love wearing boxing gloves
And singing hearts and flowers

Chorus:
(But) Somewhere in my heart * (only in some chorus's)
There is a star that shines for you
Silver splits the blue
Love will see it through
And somewhere in my heart
There is the will to set you free
All you've got to be is true

A star above the city in the northern chill
A baby being born to the overkill
No say no place to go
A t.v. and a radio

Amibition and love wearing boxing gloves
And singing hearts and flowers

Chorus

But who could heal
What's never been as one
And our hearts have been torn
Since the day we were born
Just like anyone

From Westwood to Hollywood
The one thing that's understood
Is that you can't buy time
But you can sell your soul
And the closest thing to heaven is to rock and roll

Notes:

Great guitarist, fantastic producer and creator of numerous Spector style string-laden pop gems. He found initial success with Suede but left during the recording of their glorious second album "Dog Man Star". He has solo albums and in conjunction with David McAlmont. The number of records he has played on or produced is huge, most famously on Duffy's debut album. He has been hailed by some critics as the greatest guitarist of his generation, as well as one of Britain's most original and influential guitarists. He was voted the 24th greatest guitarist of the last 30 years in a national 2010 BBC poll.

Should I tell you why I feel so down
When all I've carried for days is the same old doubts?
Well I'd tell you if I'd had a plan
Only you're one of those with your head in the sand

While I don't feel so afraid
Maybe this is just some kind of phase
But I don't care about the wind in my face

'Cause I'm not alone, these days
No, I'm not alone, these days, yes
I'm not alone, these days
No, I'm not alone, these days, yes

Could I tell you how I hear those sounds?
Well I've been roaming the streets
With my head in the clouds
And I won't need to show you my heart
'cause all I need in my hands is an electric guitar

Well I thought that you understood
That friends like these won't ever do me no good
'Cause I have never know the people I should
But I'm not alone, these days
No, I'm not alone, these days, yes
I'm not alone, these days
No, I'm not alone, these days, yea yea yea yeah

No, I'm not alone, these days
No, I'm not alone, these days, yes
I'm not alone, these days
No, I'm not alone, these days, yes

I'm not alone (Well I just thought that you could), these days (I just thought that you should)
No, I'm not alone (Sometimes you would), these days (Stay with me)
Misunderstood (I just thought that you knew)
I'm not alone (I just hope that you do), these days (I just wanted you to stay with me)
Misunderstood
Maybe I misunderstood

Maybe I misunder...

Title: Don't Let it Get You Down
Artist: Victoria Williams
Year: 1989
Available on: The Bridge: A Tribute To Neil Young

Clip:
Victoria Williams
Neil Young

Notes:

I really know nothing about her apart from this song that featured on a compilation album. Her voice sounds fragile and it seems to suit the song and it's subject perfectly.

"Don't Let It Bring You Down" is the seventh track on Neil Young's album After the Gold Rush. It was written by Young. It also appears on the 1971 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young live album Four Way Street as well as Young's 2007 album Live at Massey Hall 1971, which was recorded in 1971.

The Bridge: A Tribute To Neil Young is a 1989 anthology album that features a variety of alternative rock bands covering songs written by Neil Young. A portion of the profits from the album were donated to The Bridge School, which develops and uses advanced technologies to aid in the instruction of handicapped children.

Victoria Williams (born December 23, 1958) is an American singer-songwriter and musician, originally from Shreveport, Louisiana, although she has resided in Southern California throughout her musical career. She is noted for her descriptive songwriting talent, which she has used to immerse the listener of her songs into a vivid feeling of small-town, rural Southern upbringing and life. Her best-known songs include "Crazy Mary", and "Century Plant".

Old man sitting
by the side of the road
With the lorries rolling by,
Blue moon sinking
from the weight of the load
And the building scrape the sky,
Cold wind ripping
down the allay at dawn
And the morning paper flies,
Dead man lying
by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes.

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning,
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around.

Blind man running
through the light
of the night
With an answer in his hand,
Come on down
to the river of sight
And you can really understand,
Red lights flashing
through the window
in the rain,
Can you hear the sirens moan?
White cane lying
in a gutter in the lane,
If you're walking home alone.

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning,
Just find someone who's turning
And you will come around.

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning,
Just find someone who's turning
And you will come around.

I know...Duffy!?!!

Who would have guessed?

A great windswept, string laden ballad.

Shame she doesn't have more like this.

Shame about the Coke ad.

==================

"Rockferry" is the debut single by Duffy, written by Duffy and Bernard Butler. It is the first track on the album Rockferry.

"Rockferry" was available for download on 19 November 2007 and was released on 3 December 2007 on limited edition 7" vinyl, with only 500 copies.

The track received extremely positive reviews. Rolling Stone commented that she's "singing with great sincerity." Allmusic called it a "grand, sweeping ballad." MusicOMH.com said that she "carries the song unbelievably well, pouring drama and emotion into the lyrics, building up quite masterfully to the song's climax." Spin Magazine included "Rockferry" in its list of the 20 best songs of 2008. Time included it at number 9 of its Top 10 songs of 2008.

I'd move to Rockferry,
Tomorrow
And I'd build my house, baby
With sorrow

I'd leave my shadow,
To fall behind
And I wouldn't write to you
'cos I'm not that kind

The midnight trains are boarding
All wrap up 8s
I pich my load and i fill my truck
before its too late

I leave the stars to judge
my every move
I'm not going to think of you, oh
I'd get the blues

Theres no sleep on the journey
away from time
A bag of songs and a heavy heart
won't make me down

i'll give it all my strength and my mind
i'll make this decision with or without

I'd move to Rockferry,
Tomorrow
And I'd build my house, baby
With sorrow

I'd leave my shadow,
To fall behind
And i wouldn't write to you
'cos i'm not that kind
not that kind

Rockferry, not that kind (repeat)
(fading)

Notes:

"Eloise" is a pop song first released in 1968. It was sung by Barry Ryan, and written by his twin brother Paul Ryan. Running for a little over five minutes, it featured strong orchestration, strong vocals, and a brief slow interlude. In that it is similar to the same year's hit "MacArthur Park". "Eloise" sold 3 million copies worldwide, and reached number 2 in the UK Single Chart as published by Record Retailer, but hit number 1 in the NME and Melody Maker charts. It topped the chart in seventeen countries.

On the back of the commercial success of the Phantasmagoria album, in 1986 The Damned released their cover of the track as a single. They were rewarded with their biggest hit, when it reached number 3 in the UK Singles Chart, boosted by two different 12" releases. It was not included on any studio albums, but has since been issued on several Damned compilations.

EVERY NIGHT I'M THERE
I'M ALWAYS THERE,SHE KNOWS I'M THERE
AND HEAVEN KNOWS
I HOPE SHE GOES
I FIND IT HARD
TO REALIZE THAT LOVE WAS IN HER EYES
IT'S DYING NOW
SHE KNOWS I'M CRYING NOW

AND EVERY NIGHT I'M THERE
I BREAK MY HEART TO PLEASE
ELOISE,ELOISE

YOU KNOW I'M ON MY KNEES YEAH
I SAID PLEASE
YOU'RE ALL I WANT,SO HEAR MY PRAYER
MY PRAYER

MY ELOISE IS LIKE THE STARS THAT PLEASE THE NIGHT
THE SUN THAT MAKES THE DAY
THAT LIGHTS THE WAY
AND WHEN THAT STAR GOES BY
I HOLD IT IN MY HANDS AND CRY
HER LOVE WAS MINE
YOU KNOW MY SUN WILL SHINE

AND EVERY NIGHT IM THERE
I BREAK MY HEART TO PLEASE
ELOISE,ELOISE
YOU'RE ALL I WANT YOU GOTTA HEAR MY PRAYER
MY PRAYER

MY ELOISA
I LOVE TO PLEASE HER
I'D LIKE TO CARE
BUT SHE'S NOT THERE
AND WHEN I FIND YOU
I'D BE SO KIND
YOU'D WANT TO STAY
I KNOW YOU'D STAY

AND AS THE DAYS GROW OLD
THE NIGHTS GROW COLD
I WANNA HOLD HER NEAR TO ME
YOU KNOW SHE'S DEAR TO ME

AND ONLY TIME WILL TELL
AND TAKE AWAY THIS LONELY HELL
I'M ON MY KNEES
TO MY ELOISE

AND EVERY NIGHT IM THERE
I BREAK MY HEART TO PLEASE
ELOISE,MY ELOISE

YOU ARE MY LIFE SO HEAR MY PRAYER
YOU ARE THE PRIZE
I KNOW YOU'RE THERE,I KNOW YOU'RE THERE
YOU'RE ALL I WANT YOU GOTTA HEAR MY PRAYER
YEAH YEAH YEAH
YOU'RE ALL I NEED
BUT YOU'RE NOT THERE
OH NO YOU'RE NOT THERE
NO NO NO NO
YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH
MY ELOISA,OH I GOTTA PLEASE HER
MY ELOISA
MY ELOISA
OH MY ELOISA,COME BACK TO ME

Clip: Untouchable

Notes:

A rather splendid piece of superior pop music. It was their last single, and at this rate will be their last. Aside from the other one, this is their best song.

Wiki:

"Untouchable" is a song performed by British all-female pop group Girls Aloud, taken from their fifth studio album Out of Control (2008). The song was written by Miranda Cooper, Brian Higgins and his production team Xenomania, and produced by Higgins and Xenomania. Influenced by trance music and Balearic beat, the album version of "Untouchable" is over six minutes long. Remixed for single release in April 2009, "Untouchable" memorably became Girls Aloud's first single to miss the top ten on the UK Singles Chart.

In the music video, inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 2001: Space Odyssey, the group travels through space and approaches Earth in illuminated glass spheres (resembling meteorites). "Untouchable" was promoted through an appearance on Dancing on Ice and the group's Out of Control Tour, during which the song was performed. The song received generally favorable reviews from most contemporary music critics, who praised its ambition.

Through wind and rain we got here
Now we're flying baby with no fear
We've been doing pain for so long
When I stare in ya eyes it's all gone
Through wind and rain we burn bright
Learn to fly through flames and hold tight
With so many ways to go wrong
But when I look in ya eyes they're all gone

[Chorus:]
And in my dreams it feels like we are forty stories tall
When you're around, oooh, we're untouchable
And in my dreams it feels like we are ever gonna fall
We're safe and sound and we're untouchable

It's only real when you're not around
I'm walking in the rain, the sun goes down (oh oh)
And only love can save us now
I need you hear again to show me how (oh oh)

I know that love shouldn't be so hard
And sometimes we're standing in the dark
But you light up every way I go
And I know a heart shouldn't beat so hard
And sometimes we're swimming with the sharks
But you light up and keep me out of the cold

[Chorus]

It's only real when you're not around
The candle in my head is burning out (oh oh)

I know that love shouldn't be so hard
And sometimes we're standing in the dark
But you light up everyway I go
And I know a heart shouldn't beat so hard
And sometimes we're swimming with the sharks
But you light up and keep me out of the cold

[Chorus]

Whenever you're gone gone they wait at the door
And everything's hurting like before
Without any meaning, we're just skin and bone
Like beautiful robots dancing alone
Whenever you're gone gone they wait at the door
And everything's hurting like before
Without any meaning, we're just skin and bone
Like beautiful robots dancing alone

[Chorus]

Somewhere in My Heart and April Skies are great, especially the former. Rockferry is IMO her best song and Destroy Rock'N'Roll is decent.

Never rated Eloise, I am a bit surprised you do.

It's a good song but it's probably a hang over from my childhood as much as anything else. When you are still in primary school and see a vampire performing on Top of the Pops it leaves a lasting positive impression.

Notes:

Jethro Tull are a British rock group formed in December 1967. Their music is characterised by the vocals, acoustic guitar, and flute playing of Ian Anderson, who has led the band since its founding, and the guitar work of Martin Barre, who has been with the band since 1969.

Initially playing blues rock with an experimental flavour, they have also incorporated elements of classical music, folk music, jazz, hard rock and art rock into their music

A Song Gonna lose my way tomorrow,
gonna give away my car.
I'd take you along with me,
but you would not go so far.
Don't see what I do not want to see,
you don't hear what I don't say.
Won't be what I don't want to be,
I continue in my way.

Don't see, see, see where I'm goin',
Don't see, see, see where I'm goin',
Don't see, see, see where I'm goin' to,
I don't want to.

Everyday I see the mornin' come on in the same old way.
I tell myself tomorrow brings me things I would not dream today.

Clip: Lovin Spoonful - Summer In The City

Notes:

What an absolutely splendid tune. I heard this as a kid and have loved it ever since.

"Summer in the City" is the title of a song recorded by The Lovin' Spoonful, written by Mark Sebastian (brother of John Sebastian) and Steve Boone. It came from their album Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful and it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1966. The song featured a series of car horns, during the instrumental bridge, starting with a Volkswagen Beetle horn, and ending up with a jackhammer sound, in order to give the impressions of the sounds of the summer in the city. The song is ranked number 393 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city
Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city
[Instrumental break]
Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Song #: 198
Title: Ramblin' Man
Artist: Lemon Jelly
Year: 2002
Available on: Lost Horizons
UK Chart peak: n/a

Clip: Ramblin' Man

Notes:

Utterly fantastic...just makes the day better.

From wiki:
Lemon Jelly is a British electronic music duo from London, formed in 1998. Since their inception, the band's line-up has included Fred Deakin and Nick Franglen. Lemon Jelly has been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and BRIT Awards.

Fred Deakin and Nick Franglen briefly met in North London and became friends before going their separate ways. Deakin became a DJ and founded his very own Airside studios and Franglen became a studio programmer, before the two became reacquainted in 1998.

Lemon Jelly released three critially acclaimed EPs in 1998, 1999, and 2000 respectively, which secured them a record deal with Impotent Fury, a subsidiary of XL Recordings in 2000. The band subsequently released three full-length albums before going on hiatus in 2008.

Their second album (and self-proclaimed first studio album), Lost Horizons, was released in 2002, and was another success. The album featured the singles "Space Walk" and "Nice Weather For Ducks" and was nominated for the 2003 Mercury Music Prize and a BRIT Award for the now defunct "Best Dance Act" category in 2004.

A number of their tracks have been used by the BBC and other British broadcasters for trailers and incidental music, including "Nice Weather for Ducks", featuring an impersonation of John Langstaff, and "Ramblin' Man".
John you've been on the go ever since you were born and I
Imagine few people in the world today have travelled as much
As you have. Now why?

Well I dunno.
I suppose some of us are cave dwellers, some of us live in houses, some of us like to be loose footed.
I'm a ramblin' man.

I'm a ramblin' man.
