Year: 1984
Available on: Treasure
UK Chart peak: n/a

Notes:

What a gorgeous sound they make. Completely unique and utterly fab. Nobody sounds like The Cocteau Twins.

Treasure (1984) is the third album by the Cocteau Twins. With this album, the band settled on what would, from then on, be their primary lineup: vocalist Elizabeth Fraser, guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Simon Raymonde. The song "Ivo" is named after the album's record label 4AD founder Ivo Watts-Russell. This new line-up also coincided with the development of the ethereal sound associated with the Cocteau Twins' music.

The album reached #29 on the UK Albums Chart, hence becoming the band's first UK Top 40 album, and charting for 8 weeks. It also became one of the band's most critically successful releases

Title: Anyday
Artist: Derek and the Dominos
Year: 1970
Available on: Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
UK Chart peak: n/a

Clip: Anyday

Notes:

I have never really liked Eric Clapton and always *hated* Layla. It was only after seeing this album appearing on so many 'Greatest Album' lists that I decided to give it a go. It turned out to be a fantastic piece of classic 70's rock full of great tunes. Anyday is my favourite but the whole album is really rather splendid.

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is a blues-rock album by Derek and the Dominos, released in November 1970, best known for its eponymous title track, "Layla". The album is often regarded as Eric Clapton's greatest musical achievement, in ensemble with a talented supporting cast of Bobby Whitlock on keyboards and vocals, Jim Gordon on drums, Carl Radle on bass, and special guest performer Duane Allman on lead and slide guitar.

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs peaked at #16 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart and was certified gold by the RIAA. The album again made the Billboard 200 in 1972, 1974 and in 1977. In 2011, it was charted in Britain, peaking at No. 68.

In 2000, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2003 the TV network VH1 named Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs the 89th greatest album of all time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 115 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
You were talking and I thought I heard you say
"Please leave me alone.
Nothing in this world can make me stay.
I'd rather go back, I'd rather go back home."

But if you believed in me like I believe in you,
We could have a love so true, we would go on endlessly.

[Chorus:]
And I know anyday, anyday, I will see you smile.
Any way, any way, only for a little while.

Well someday baby, I know you're gonna need me
When this old world has got you down.
I'll be right here, so woman call me
And I'll never ever let you down.

[Bridge]

[Chorus 2x]

To break the glass and twist the knife into yourself;
You've got to be a fool to understand.
To bring your woman back home after she's left you for another,
You've got to be a, you've got to be a man.

[Bridge]

[Chorus 2x]

Anyday, anyday, I will see you smile.
Any way, any way, just for a little, just for a little while.

Notes:

"In One Ear" is a song by American rock band Cage the Elephant. It was released as the second, then re-released as the fifth single from the band's 2009 self-titled debut album. In the re-issue dated August 7, 2010, the single peaked at number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, the band's second number one single on that chart.

They say that we ain't got the style, we ain't got the class
We ain't got the tunes that's goin' to put us on the map
And I'm a phony in disguise, tryin' to make the radio
I'm an anti-social anarchist who sounds like so and so

They say I'm just a stupid kid, just a crazy radical
Rock and roll is dead, I probably should've stayed in school
Another generation X who somehow slipped up through the crack
Oh, they'd love to see me fall but I'm already on my back

So it goes in one ear and right out the other
People talkin' shit but you know I never bother
It goes to one ear and right out the other
People talkin' shit, they can kiss the back of my hand

Now I know I'm not a saint, I been a sinner all my life
I ain't tryin' to hide my flaws, I'd rather keep them in the light
They wanna criticize, scrutinize, cast another stone
Burn me at the stake and sit and watch it from the throne

They say the devil is my pal, I do a lotta drugs
The crowd will only like me if they're really ****' drunk
[ From : http://www.elyrics.net/read/c/cage-the- ... yrics.html ]
They think they know my thoughts, but they don't know the least
If they listened to the words they'd find the message that's beneath

But it goes in one ear and right out the other
People talkin' shit even though they never bother
It goes in one ear and right out the other
People talkin' shit, they can kiss the back of my hand

You hear that? You hear what's comin'?
Oh, you better run for the hills 'cause we're comin' to your town
And we're gonna burn that **** down

Here's the moral to the story, we don't do it for the glory
We don't do it for the money, we don't do it for the things
So all the critics who despise us go ahead and criticize us
It's your charity that drives us, adds the fire to our flames

And it goes in one ear and right out the other
People talkin' shit but you know I never bother
It goes in one ear, and right out the other
I'm only playin' music 'cause you know I ****' love it

It goes in one ear and right out the other
People talkin' shit but you know I never bother
It goes in one ear, and right out the other
People talkin' shit, they can kiss the back of my hand

Notes:

"Sour Times" is a song by English trip hop group Portishead, released as their second-ever single in August 1994. Written by all three members of the band, "Sour Times" features on Portishead's debut album Dummy (1994). The song uses a sample from Argentine composer Lalo Schifrin's "Danube Incident", and was itself sampled in the 2004 single "Teardrops" by The 411.

The original 1994 release initially reached only number 57 in the UK, but after the success of "Glory Box" in 1995, it was re-released and peaked at number 13 on the UK singles chart in April. It is also the band's only song to date to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, at number 53. The "Sour Times" music video is made of footage from Portishead's short film To Kill a Dead Man.

To pretend no one can find
The fallacies of morning rose
Forbidden fruit, hidden eyes
Courtesies that I despise in me
Take a ride, take a shot now

Cos nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do

Covered by the blind belief
That fantasies of sinful screens
Bear the facts, assume the dye
End the vows no need to lie, enjoy
Take a ride, take a shot now

Cos nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do

Who oo am I, what and why
Cos all I have left is my memories of yesterday
Ohh these sour times

Cos nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do

After time the bitter taste
Of innocence decent or race
Scattered seed, buried lives
Mysteries of our disguise revolve
Circumstance will decide...

Cos nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do

Cos nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you

Cos nobody loves me
It's true
Not like you do

Song #: 193
Title: Freak Scene
Artist: Dinosaur Jr
Year: 1988
Available on: Bug
UK Chart peak: It didn't at all?!?? Amazed.

Clip: Freak Scene

Notes:

"Freak Scene" is a song by American alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr., the opening track on the group's third studio album Bug (1988). Written and produced by frontman J. Mascis.

"Freak Scene" is acclaimed as one of the best songs by Dinosaur Jr. In his review of Bug, Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic called the track "the masterpiece of the record, . . . a surprisingly catchy song encapsulating the appeal and pitfalls of indie rock within three minutes." Jess Harvell of Pitchfork Media believes "'Freak Scene' is probably indie rock's greatest guitar performance and the band's greatest pop song, somehow finding room for Psychedelic Furs jangle, Edge-style ascending harmonies, Eddie Van Halen in the drunk tank, pickled country, and a cherry on top in three and a half minutes without feeling at all cluttered." The single reached number seven in the UK Indie Chart, and spent 12 weeks on the chart in total.

Seen enough to eye you
But I've seen to much to try you
It's always weirdness while you
Dig it much too much to fry you
The weirdness flows between us
Anyone can tell to see us
Freak scene just can't believe us
Why can't it just be cool and free us?

Seen enough to eye you
But I've seen to much to try you
It's always weirdness while you
Dig it much too much to fry you
The weirdness flows between us
Anyone can tell to see us
Freak scene just can't believe us
Why can't it just be cool and leave us?

It's so **** I can't believe it
If there's a way I wish we'd see it
How could it work just can't conceive it
Oh what a mess it's just to leave it

Sometimes I don't thrill you
Sometimes I think I'll kill you
Just don't let me **** up will you
'Cause when I need a friend it's still you

What A Mess

I was really rather amazed to see this didn't chart. For a song that was so familiar and well known I would have thought that it would have, at least, made the bottom end of the chart.

Notes:

"It Must Be Love" is a song written and originally recorded in 1971 by Labi Siffre. However, the best known version was recorded by ska/pop band Madness in 1981.

The original Labi Siffre recording was released as a single in 1971, and reached number 14 in the UK singles chart. It also appeared on his 1972 album Crying Laughing Loving Lying.
Madness' version was originally issued as a standalone single in 1981 and appeared on their UK number one compilation album Complete Madness the following year, and on many other Madness compilations since. In 1983, it peaked in the US Billboard Magazine chart at #33.

The video mostly shows band members playing in a white room and standing over a grave. It also features guitarist Chris Foreman and saxophonist Lee Thompson playing their instruments underwater. Foreman appears at the start of the video warning viewers not to attempt the "very dangerous stunt" they are about to see, presumably referring to the swimming pool sequence. Labi Siffre makes a cameo appearance as a violin player.

I never thought I'd miss you
Half as much as I do
And I never thought I'd feel this way
The way I feel
About you
As soon as I wake up
Every night, every day
I know that it's you I need
To take the blues away

It must be love, love, love,
It must be love, love, love,
Nothing more, nothing less
Love is the best

How can it be that we can
Say so much without words?
Bless you and bless me
Bless the bees
And the birds
I've got to be near you
Every night, every day
I couldn't be happy
Any other way

It must be love, love, love,
It must be love, love, love,
Nothing more, nothing less
Love is the best

As soon as I wake up
Every night, every day
I know that it's you I need
To take the blues away

It must be love, love, love,
It must be love, love, love' It must be love, love, love...

Notes:

"Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" is B. J. Thomas's #1 song, written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach for the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. David and Bacharach also won Best Original Score. It was recorded in seven takes, after Bacharach expressed dissatisfaction with the first six. In the film version of the song, B. J. Thomas had been recovering from laryngitis, which made his voice sound more hoarse than in the 7" release. The film version featured a separate instrumental break when Paul Newman undertook stunts on a bicycle.

The single by B. J. Thomas reached #1 on charts in the United States, Canada, and Norway. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in January 1970 and also spent seven weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart. In 2008, Thomas's version was ranked as the 85th biggest song on Billboard's Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs. His version reached #38 in the UK Singles Chart.

Raindrops keep falling on my head
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothin seems to fit
Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling

So I just did me some talkin to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he got things done
Sleepin on the job
Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling

But there's one thing I know
The blues he sends to meet me wont defeat me
It wont be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesnt't't mean my eyes will soon be turnin red
Cryings not for me
Cause Im never gonna stop the rain by complainin
Because Im free
Nothings worrying me.

not too fussed on BJ's politics (he's been Fox News many times) but it is a great pop song, one of Bacharach's greatest.

Notes:

Let It Come Down is the fourth album by the space rock group Spiritualized, released in 2001. It was recorded and produced at Abbey Road and AIR Studios. It took Jason Pierce, Spiritualized's lead singer, guitarist and sole constant member four years to write, perform, produce and release. The album utilizes 115 session musicians, including orchestra and London Community Gospel Choir. The wall of sound technique (most notably used by 60's record producer Phil Spector) is evident on this album, especially on such tracks as "Do It All Over Again", "Stop Your Crying" and "The Straight and the Narrow".

Nothing hurts you like the pain of someone you love
There ain't nothing you can gain that prepares you enough

Come on baby stop your crying
Come on baby stop your crying now

Nothing hurts you like the pain of someone you care about
If I could take it all myself you know I sure would without a doubt

Come on baby stop your crying
Come on baby stop your crying now

Nothing hurts you like the pain of someone so close to you
I feel so broke inside but I'll devote my life to loving you

Come on baby stop your crying
Come on baby stop your crying now

Title: Try
Artist: Janis Joplin
Year: 1969
Available on: compilations
UK Chart peak: n/a

Clip: Try

Notes:

Janis Lyn Joplin (January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970) first rose to prominence in the late 1960s as the lead singer of the psychedelic-acid rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, and later as a solo artist with her more soulful and bluesy backing groups, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. She was one of the more popular acts at the Monterey Pop Festival and later became one of the major attractions to the Woodstock festival.

Janis Joplin only charted five singles in her life but her hits and other popular songs from throughout her short four year career include "Down On Me", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Coo Coo", "Summertime", "Piece of My Heart", "Turtle Blues", "Ball 'n' Chain", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Maybe", "To Love Somebody", "Kozmic Blues", "Work Me, Lord", "Move Over", "Cry Baby", "A Woman Left Lonely" "Get It While You Can", "My Baby", "Trust Me", "Mercedes Benz", "One Night Stand", "Raise Your Hand" and her only number one hit, "Me and Bobby McGee".

At the height of her career, she was known as "The Queen of Rock and Roll" as well as "The Queen of Psychedelic Soul" and became known as Pearl amongst her friends. She was also a painter, dancer and music arranger.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked Joplin number 46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004, and number 28 on its 2008 list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

Try, try, try just a little bit harder
So I can love, love, love him, I tell myself
Well, I'm gonna try yeah, just a little bit harder
So I won't lose, lose, lose him to nobody else.
Hey! Well, I don't care how long it's gonna take you now,
But if it's a dream I don't want No I don't really want it
If it's a dream I don't want nobody to wake me.

Yeah, I'm gonna try yeah, just a little bit harder
So I can give, give, give, give him every bit of my soul.
Yeah, I'm gonna try yeah, just a little bit harder
So I can show, show, show him love with no control.
Hey! I've waited so long for someone so fine
I ain't gonna lose my chance, no I don't wanna lose it,
Ain't gonna lose my chance to make you mine, all mine.
All right, get it! Yeah!

Try yeah, try yeah, hey, hey, hey, try yeah,
Oh try whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,
Oh anybody, oh anybody, oh anybody,
Try oh yeah (just a little bit harder)
Whoa I gotta try some more,
I said try yeah, aw I said try,
I said try try try try try try,
Oh try oh yeah, try oh yeah!

Hey hey, I gotta talk to my man now,
You know I, I gotta feel for my man now,
I said I, I gotta work for my man now,
You know I, I gotta hurt for my man now,
I think-a every day for my man now,
You know it, every way for my man now.
I say try, try yeah, oh try yeah,
Hey hey hey, try yeah-hey, oh, try...

Notes:

"The Passenger" is a song by Iggy Pop and Ricky Gardiner, recorded and released by Iggy Pop on the Lust for Life album in 1977. It was also released as the B-side of the album's only single, "Success".

The lyrics, written by Iggy Pop allegedly aboard Berlin's S-Bahn, have been interpreted as embodying the nomadic spirit of the punk outcast. Guitarist Ricky Gardiner composed the music. While it possesses a distinctive riff, "The Passenger" is perhaps most recognizable by its chorus, on which David Bowie sings back-up.

I am the passenger and I ride and I ride
I ride through the city's backsides
I see the stars come out of the sky
Yeah, the bright and hollow sky
You know it looks so good tonight

I am the passenger, I stay under glass
I look through my window so bright
I see the stars come out tonight
I see the bright and hollow sky
Over the city's ripped backsides
And everything looks good tonight

Singing, la la la

Get into the car
We'll be the passenger
We'll ride through the city tonight
We'll see the city's ripped backsides

We'll see the bright and hollow sky
We'll see the stars that shine so bright
Stars made for us tonight

Oh, the passenger
How, how he rides
Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides

He looks through his window
What does he see?
He sees the sign and hollow sky
He sees the stars come out tonight
He sees the city's ripped backsides
He sees the winding ocean drive

And everything was made for you and me
All of it was made for you and me
'Cause it just belongs to you and me
So let's take a ride and see what's mine

Singing, la la la

Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his window side

He sees the things that he knows are his
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He sees the city sleep at night
He sees the stars are out tonight

And all of it is yours and mine
And all of it is yours and mine
So let's ride and ride and ride and ride

Singing, la la la

I had been somewhat neglectful. A w/e off became a short break became an extended hiatus. That's what happens when you have gender adjustment surgery - you spend all your time shopping for clothes, dressing up and playing with your new bits.

It's back now and I shall see it out to the end sometime this century.

Song #: 187
Title: Cecilia
Artist: Simon and Garfunkel
Year: 1969
Available on: Bridge Over Troubled Water
UK Chart peak: n/a (Didn't chart despite being the follow up to a #1 hit)

Clip: Cecilia

Notes:

Perhaps not their best or most famous song but the one I end up singing all the time thanks to the weather lady on the local BBC channel. Everytime Cecilia Daly is warning of rain or welcoming the sun it kickstarts me into singing this. It has got to the stage that even when it is not her doing the weather I notice that it is not her and the tune starts up. Simon and Garfunkel = isobars, cold fronts and partly cloudy with sunny intervals.

"Cecilia" is a song written by US musician Paul Simon. It was first recorded by Simon and Garfunkel for their 1970 album Bridge Over Troubled Water. When released as a single, it reached #4 in the US charts. The single did not chart in the UK, despite being released as the follow-up to Simon and Garfunkel's number one hit "Bridge Over Troubled Water".

The songwriter suggests that the "Cecilia" of the title refers to St. Cecilia, patron saint of music in the Catholic tradition, and thus the song might refer to the frustration of fleeting inspiration in songwriting, the vagaries of musical fame or in a wider sense the absurdity of pop culture. The song is generally interpreted as a lament over a capricious lover who causes both anguish and jubilation to the singer. St. Cecilia is mentioned in another Paul Simon song, "The Coast" (from his 1990 album The Rhythm of the Saints): "A family of musicians took shelter for the night in the little harbour church of St. Cecilia."

Oh Cecilia, you're breaking my heart
You're shaking my confidence daily
Oh, Cecilia, I'm down on my knees
I'm begging you please to come home

Oh Cecilia, you're breaking my heart
You're shaking my confidence daily
Oh, Cecilia, I'm down on my knees
I'm begging you please to come home
Come on home

Making love in the afternoon with Cecilia
Up in my bedroom (making love)
I got up to wash my face
When I come back to bed
Someone's taken my place

Oh Cecilia, you're breaking my heart
You're shaking my confidence daily
Oh, Cecilia, I'm down on my knees
I'm begging you please to come home
Come on home

Jubilation, she loves me again,
I fall on the floor and I'm laughing,
Jubilation, she loves me again,
I fall on the floor and I'm laughing

Isn't "Cecilia" more famous for being recorded by someone else? (can't think of who now!) Not a big fan of this one, it's cute though. :D
