The most Kate Bush-alike French singer is back!! :o

Franky Knight is Émilie Simon's fifth album and was released this week. It's her first effort since 'The Big Machine', one of my favourite albums of all time! :D

I've listened to her in a routine-like kind of way (if that has the same meaning in English as in Swedish? As in, without dedication).. but I will always love her song All Is White - apart from that song, she has never captured my curiosity very much.

But she's good, she has a nice voice, a bit thin, so therefore not very much like Kate Bush, which many people think.

Listening to the new single now!

Oh WOW! I really liked this! Brilhante!

Still, it's hard for me to relate to her voice. It doesn't fit into any of the categories I have established in my head, it's not fragile, it's not empowering, it's not imaginative - maybe it's just "lost"? Because the song is a bit... "lost". In a positive way!

I loved the video as well. And after Björk's Volta album I've developoed a love for all sorts of brass instruments - they are so powerful!

Assuming we'll see this in the UKMIX Forum Contest then? Haha! Definietly a purchase! Sometimes you just need one or two songs to begin to understand an artist, and this might be it for me - because I've never disliked her - she's just seemed hard to relate to in a way.

Blah Blah Blah. Awesome!

OMG! One of my goddesses! BRB getting the album!!! I wonder what's her new theme?

  I just can't with her. Such amazingness, she is one of the greatest talents in our generation. She's like what Utada Hikaru would sound like if she spent more time practising.

Her compositions on this album are a bit difficult to retain at first, because her chord changes are rather unusual and unexpected. When it becomes too unexpected, her songs sound quite dissonant.

Another issue I have with the album is how the sound of several songs are quite of place for an Emilie Simon album. These songs (Call It Love, Franky's Princess, Sous Les Étoiles) all sound like they belong to separate albums. There is also track with Vegetal-like arrangements (Holy Pool of Memories), while the rest are completely unique.

The lyrics are painfully personal. It hurts to hear her address her dead partner by his name. :( The emotion gives the album such a cinematic feel, especially on opener Mon Chevalier. This makes the album so endearing and worthy of several chances.

There's a part in Walking With You which makes me want to cry. :(

After repeated listens, I think this is another masterpiece from her. I am in love with it!

This album got me emotional. I feel so sad for her lost. :(

I wrote some songs,
they're all for you
There's nothing else
that I can do

Too late to pray,
too soon to see
your eyes again,
my sweet Franky

(...)

You took my soul
away with you,
the night you went,
you gave me yours

'Franky Knight' really inspired me... I just love every song!

Well, I wrote a long review about the album (HERE, in Portuguese). Here's a translation - sorry for my English:

Émilie Simon is alone and wears her own grief. Her gaze seems distant and desolate in the midst of a recording studio, so it's predictable how sad is the message on 'Franky Knight'. The title is an English translation of François Chevallier, the name of her fiancé, who died in 2009 victimized by complications of Influenza A (H1N1). Nothing would fit so well in this new work: it is a masterpiece, the ULTIMATE DECLARATION OF LOVE from one of the greatest talents of France.

Image

The opening track and first single, "Mon Chevalier" ("My Knight"), gives tone to the tortuous confidences of Simon. Verses like You took my soul away with you, the night you went, you gave me yours are an
unique and sensitive way to warn the listener that everything in 'Franky Knight' is about François, after all, I wrote some songs, they're all for you. There's nothing else that I can do.

Despite the lyrics laden on her passionate pain, the album isn't gloomy at all. One example is the romantic "I Call It Love", which sounds very similar to 50's classic jazz and it's a good choice for Oldies lovers. Baby, can't you see how much you meant to me? I call it love!.

The rhythms experienced in "Holy Pool Of Memories" and "Something More" reminded me of Émilie's early works. The message, especially in the last song, follows her impressions on hope and conformism, it's simply brilliant.I know there's something more. Tell me why do I see you everywhere, every step that I take...

"Franky's Princess" is my favourite song! It brought me to tears several times, though indiscriminately this is the most electronic one. It's a very personal moment - Émilie declares her love for Franky / François and exposes her struggle against loneliness, then concludes still being "the Franky's princess": I don't want you to go, I tried so hard, but I miss you so! Still your princess, still your princess.

The most urgent vocals and fast beats are in "Walking With You", perhaps it's the time when ingenuity is gone and this new version of Juliet fits the remains of her memories, while she still dreaming about François.

After the excellent "The Big Machine', she keeps looking for new audiences, so there are not many songs in French in this effort, but they all are really beautiful: "Bel Amour" ("Beautiful Love"), "Sous Les Etoiles" ("Under The Stars") and "Jetaimejetaimejetaime" ("Iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou"). There is also an instrumental song, "Même Les Amants Du Jour" ("The Lovers of the Same Day").

Image

So, "Franky Knight" is the most beautiful and intimate musical expression heard in 2011, I think. A perfect junction of her remembrance and sorrowful feelings; a magnificent highlight to an already perfect discography. 10/10

Lovely review! Thanks for the song title translations, my French is rusty (I know less than 7 words).

I watched Bel Amour performed live on some TV Show and now I'm so in love with it. The post-chorus wails are so beautiful. Walking With You is a complete smash, she has to release it as a single at some point!

8.5/10

I have trouble finding the album on sale anywhere, not even on eBay. Anybody know where I can get a link to a physical copy?

It really is! European music isn't very cheap. :o Even on iTunes France a song is 1.29 euros.

Walking With You!!! It's such an amazing song, some parts remind me of Alex Winston's material (the backing vocals), actually I would be forever grateful if Alex Winston moves in this direction musically at some point in the future.

This album is really strong, but I can't get over how out of place I Call It Love and Franky's Princess are, musically. I think thematically it isn't really a problem as the album serves as a soundtrack doesn't it, but I'd love an official explanation!

I originally placed "Franky Knight" as my #4 favourite album of 2011... now I'm not that sure, perhaps I'd place it in my #1.

This is the most beautiful record since Antony and The Johnsons' "I Am A Bird Now" (2005).

How random! Wasn't there a contest to shoot the I Call It Love video? Going to watch this, BRB!

What on earth is this? Clips of a movie interspersed with a live performance? It looks fanmade. I really hope it's not considered as an actual music video, because if it is then it is by far her worst video to date. All her music videos to date have been ***** flawless.

My favourite song!! :D

P.S.: It seems Jtjtjt isn't a proper music video, since they claim "Franky's Princess" as the 2nd clip.

I was looking through her Youtube a week ago to see if she put any new proper music videos and didn't find anything, surprised to see the video for Franky's Princess! Quite lovely, her second stop motion video yes? Choreography is brilliant.

Shame she's not making a video for Walking With You. :( If I remember correctly, she only does 2 music videos per album?

Thanks a lot, Wardo!!! :D The 'English version' sucks, for real... so it's always nice to find some Portuguese speaker here. :P Hope you like the album as well!
