Thought the Beatles may have sneaked into the 2010 singles list. Any estimates of their total single sales last year?

Well, from their debut on iTunes up to the end of the chart year, all Beatles titles in the Top 200 portion of the singles chart accumulated a total sale of just under 150,000.

Of course, with so many tracks selling away at levels (just) outside the Top 200, it's impossible to say what the "unseen" total accumulated outside the Top 200 would have been. Once they're outside the Top 200, I can no longer see the individual totals.

Sadly, Music Week didn't publish the Singles and Albums Acts Top 50 charts for 2011. The annual Music Week round up of the year for 2011 wasn't written by Alan Jones. It's the first time since he moved from Record Mirror to Music Week 20+ years ago that he hasn't written the annual round-up. I assume that the compilation of these two invaluable charts was a favourite of Alan Jones but that the enthusiasm isn't shared by the writer of the 2011 round up hence why the two charts didn't appear this time around.

Isn't Adele around 5.9M right now? that would put her at #6, but yeah, she'll soon cross the 6M mark and go #5

TOP 50 SELLING ALBUM ARTISTS 2011

Rank - Sales - Artist

01 - 5,710,300 - Adele
02 -

So would anyone like to estimate the rest of the Top 50?

Shame that it is not in Music Week.

Indeed. It's the end of an era, given that Alan Jones has compiled end of year Top Singles and Albums Artist lists for almost three decades. For singles it will be very difficult to compile a list since Alan Jones had access to OCC sales data which included being able to compile an end of year top 10,000 (!) from which he could draw sales information to compile the top artists of the year lists. This would include tracks by acts that had not reached any weekly top 200 charts.

I guess the Year End artist sales in Music Week maybe got increasingly difficult for Alan Jones to compile. He has always adopted the system since Record Mirror days to not include 'featured' artists sales in with their fully credited hits. However there are now so many featured artists on singles-in some cases four or five in one single it must have been a headache to do. This tends to make the list less accurate as so many sales are missed from an artists tally. If he changed the system then I guess it would not be comparable with previous lists.

Here is the response to an email I sent regarding the 2011 Artist charts.

Music Week wrote:Alan Jones has previously compiled those charts for Music Week. However, a decision was made for the charts not to be compiled this year, so unfortunately they do not exist.
No reason given why the decision was made.

OCC wrote:The fact is, this was a chart/dataset compiled by Music Week from our data, but which they have chosen not to publish so far this year. They do still have the ability to compile this, if they wished. We have no plans immediately to compile this. It is not that Alan Jones/Music Week are not using our data. They have chosen not to publish the specific chart you mention.
Does not look promising this year.

Thanks Brian, that looks more correct. However, if one is to be really anal about it, Adele actually sold over 10,000 copies of 'itunes festival London 2011 EP' (Reached no.74 in the charts when released in July).
I would really love to know if it managed to sell over 17,000 copies, as that's all that's needed for Adele to have officially sold 5 million albums in 2011.

n.b. Adele did technically sell well over 5m anyway as the 'Live at the Royal Albert Hall' DVD included a live CD, which entered the album charts in some countries, but not eligibile in the UK. It sold ~200k in 2011.
