Actually, that could be a pretty good one ... but I still would not count on Andy winning, Novak is smashing them one after the other :D (By the way, I was surprised today he decided to give Lleyton the third set, but yeah some drama for the audience 8-) )

NADAL BEATS FEDERER IN BLOCKBUSTER SEMIFINAL AT AUSSIE OPEN

MELBOURNE, Australia - Rafael Nadal beat Roger Federer 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in an Australian Open semifinal on Thursday night, the longtime rivals playing with the intensity they normally display when they meet in Grand Slam finals.

Though the stars who have met in eight Grand Slam finals were on the same side of the draw for the first time at a major since 2005, they played as if the title were at stake.

This time, though, only Nadal will have the opportunity to win another championship — on Sunday night when the Spanish left-hander plays the winner of Friday's semifinal between defending champion Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

In doubles play, Toronto's Daniel Nestor and Belarusian partner Max Mirnyi lost their semifinal 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to India's Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic.

But a pair of Canadians advanced to the semifinals in junior play. Vancouver's Filip Peliwo defeated Joshua Ward-Hibbert of Britain, 6-3, 6-2 while second-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Montreal downed Risa Ozaki of Japan 6-4, 6-3.

Nadal, who holds a 6-2 edge in Grand Slam finals against Federer, made the key service break in the ninth game of the fourth set, making an incredible cross-court forehand winner from well behind the baseline, then watching as Federer hit a backhand wide to give Nadal a 5-4 lead.

Serving for the match, Nadal moved two points away from the win when Federer sent a backhand long. He won on his second match point when Federer floated a forehand long.

At the end, Nadal smashed a ball up high in the stadium, almost clearing the roof. He then applauded along with the crowd when Federer walked off.

Two weeks ago, Nadal injured his right knee and wasn't sure he'd be able to start the tournament. Now, he can barely believe he's in the final.

"If you tell me that two Sundays ago, I really cannot imagine," Nadal said. "For me, it's a dream to be back in a final of the Australian Open."

The 25-year-old Spaniard won the 2009 Australian title but lost in the quarter-finals in his next two trips to Melbourne Park. Federer hasn't added to his record 16 Grand Slam titles since he won the 2010 Australian Open.

"I thought Rafa played well from start to finish," Federer said. "It was a tough match physically as well. I'm disappointed, but it's only the beginning of the season. I'm feeling all right, so it's OK."

When the often enthralling play was suspended for 10 minutes late in the second set for an Australian Day fireworks display, Federer seemed to be affected most. Nadal led 5-2 at the time, and Federer lost his serve in the next game to give the Spaniard the set. In all, the Swiss dropped 11 points in a row.

"It's tough, it's not helpful, that's for sure," Federer said of the break for the fireworks. "They told us before, so it was no surprise. But I knew it was a lot of points in a row that I lost."

The capacity, 15,000-strong crowd was evenly split in its support, with the names seeming to blur after the R in rival chants.

Each time somebody called out for Rafa, it was met by a response for Roger. The cheers were just as loud for Nadal's scrambling, sometimes astonishing, passing shots as for Federer's deft winners.

With the players on serve in the second set, Nadal went so far wide on a Federer return that he was near the side wall of the arena. Incredibly, he stretched wide and returned the ball crosscourt for a winner. That set up three break points and Nadal clinched the game to take a 4-2 lead in the second set.

Federer saved a set point in the 11th game of the third set that eventually forced a tiebreaker. But Federer made three unforced errors in the tiebreaker to give Nadal a 6-1 lead, and the Spaniard eventually clinched the set on his last opportunity of five set points.

"Please win the point, that's all," Nadal recalled when asked what he was telling himself. "I was very, very nervous at that moment. Losing four set points in a row is tough, especially when you play the toughest in history."

Kim Clijsters was in the crowd, only hours after her title defence ended. And Ivan Lendl was at Rod Laver Arena for a second night, scouting opponents again as Murray's coach. So were former Australian greats Laver and Ken Rosewall.

Sharapova vs Azarenka humm difficult choice, Azarenka seems more regular, i d pick her for the win.

Once again, Rafael Nadal had a big psychological advantage against Roger Federer, more than Nadal’s performance, Federer should be disappointed as he is the only one to be blamed for his defeat!

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia will take on World No. 4 Andy Murray of Great Britain in the semi-final encounter of the 2012 Australian Open. It comes forth as a great opportunity for Murray to avenge his last year's fateful loss against Djokovic at the same venue in the title match, while the Serbian must be feeling pumped up to go for a third straight Grand Slam title. There is a lot at stake for both these contenders and certainly a lot to look forward to in this match for tennis lovers.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Defending champion Novak Djokovic moved into an Australian Open final against Rafael Nadal after edging Andy Murray in a five-set, almost five-hour semifinal late Friday night.

Despite appearing tired and sore from the second set, Djokovic rallied to beat Murray 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 7-5 in a rematch of the 2011 final at Melbourne Park to reach his third consecutive Grand Slam final.

After wasting a chance to serve out the match at 5-3 in the fifth and letting Murray back into the contest, Djokovic cashed in his first match point when the Scottish player missed a forehand after four hours, 50 minutes.

Djokovic dropped onto his back, fully laid out on the court. He got up and shook hands with Murray, before jogging back out onto the court like a boxer, dropping to his knees and crossing himself.

It was already after 12:30 a.m. Saturday when he got up again and pumped his arms triumphantly.

``Andy deserves the credit to come back from 2-5 down. He was fighting. I was fighting,'' Djokovic said. ``Not many words that can describe the feeling of the match.

``Evidently it was a physical match ... it was one of the best matches I played. Emotionally and mentally it was equally hard.''

It was a bitter setback for Murray, who lost the previous two Australian finals.

Djokovic finished last year at No. 1 after winning three of the four majors, including a straight-sets win over Murray in the Australian final. His only loss at a Grand Slam in 2011 was against Roger Federer in the French Open semifinals.

It was phenomenal season after previously only winning one major - the 2008 Australian Open - and not returning to a final for 11 Grand Slams.

``To be honest, I think I matured as a player. I started to believe on the court I could win majors,'' he said. ``Rafa and Roger are the most dominant players for the last seven, eight years. ... It was very hard to take away the titles from them. They will not give you the titles. You have to earn it.''

He is now aiming to be only the fifth man in the Open Era started in 1968 to win three straight majors - only Rod Laver, Pete Sampras, Federer and Nadal have achieved it before him, with only Laver going on to complete the Grand Slam by winning all four majors in a season.

The Australian great was in the arena named in his honor to watch Friday night's semifinal, as he had been when 2009 Australian Open winner Nadal came back from a set and a break down to beat four-time champion Federer in four sets the previous night.

Djokovic's 70-6 win-loss record in 2011 included six wins over Nadal - all in finals.

Both players had their form dips, but Djokovic's were more obvious. He led by a set and a break before Murray started coming back at him. Then Djokovic started walking gingerly and appeared to be struggling for breath - just as he had been in his straights sets quarterfinal win over No. 5-ranked David Ferrer.

At one point, he pointed to his nose and seemed to indicated to his support group that he was having trouble breathing.

He stayed in the points, despite Murray scrambling and trying to get him involved in long rallies.

After losing a tight tiebreaker and virtually conceding the fourth set, Murray rallied again after slipping behind 5-2 in the fifth. He broke Djokovic at love when the Serb was serving for the match on a three-game streak that put all the pressure back on the defending champion.

But Djokovic composed himself and seemed to be gathering energy as the match wore on. He held serve and then broke Murray to finish it off.

``I'm extremely delighted to be in the final,'' Djokovic said. ``What can be a bigger challenge than playing against Rafa Nadal, one of the greatest players ever.

``I'm going to try to recover. Obviously it's going to be physical as well. So I need to do some push-ups tonight.''

Despite being friends and childhood rivals, this was only the second meeting between Djokovic and Murray at a Grand Slam. Djokovic beat Murray in the 2011 Australian final and had a 6-4 lead in their overall head-to-heads at tour level.

Murray won the Brisbane International and came into the semifinal on a 10-match winning streak and with new coach, eight-time major winner Ivan Lendl, in his support crew.

The blue-and-white crossed Scottish flags fluttered in the crowd, held by fans with the flag painted on their faces and some wearing their tartan Tam hats. The support was evenly split at Rod Laver Arena, encouraging both players in the tense final set.

The Maria Sharapova vs. Victoria Azarenka women's final on Saturday night is being previewed in the local media as a battle of the two loudest grunters on the tour. Azarenka, who won the Sydney International title the weekend before the season's first major, is bidding to continue her winning shriek.

Sharapova has won three majors, but none since the 2008 Australian Open. Azarenka will be playing her first Grand Slam final.

The winner will move to the top of the women's rankings. Caroline Wozniacki, who came into the tournament as No. 1, will drop three places after her quarterfinal loss to 2011 champion Kim Clijsters.

Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva won the women's doubles final on Friday with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Italian duo of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and her Romanian partner Horia Tecau advanced to the mixed doubles final with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Indian pair Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi.

In the men's doubles final Saturday, American twins Bob and Mike Bryan are aiming for a Grand Slam record 12th major when they take on Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek.

Victoria Azarenka produced a performance full of power and maturity on Saturday as she thrashed Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-0 to win the Australian Open title and claim her first grand slam crown.

In what was her first slam final, the 22-year-old Belarussian recovered from a nervous start to storm to an impressive victory and will now take over the world No1 ranking from Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki.

"The best feeling, for sure," Azarenka said. "I don't know about the game. I don't know what I was doing out there. It's just pure joy what happened. I can't believe it's over."

Azarenka matched the heavy hitting of Sharapova from the baseline and, when she got the chance, her greater variety proved the crucial difference. Having started nervously with two double faults in her first service game, she hit back brilliantly and from 3-3, she won nine straight games.

As a spectacle, it was always going to struggle to match the drama of the two previous nights when first, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, and then Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray combined for two outstanding semi-finals.

It had been billed as a battle of the screamers and the two women didn't disappoint as the noise level reached 94.3 decibels according to the Whoo-ometer of local broadcaster Channel 7. But it was also a world No1 decider and, having won three grand slam titles, Sharapova's greater experience was thought likely to be the difference. As at Wimbledon last summer, however, when beaten by another grand slam final debutant, Petra Kvitova, she was outplayed on the big occasion.

The Russian's gameplan was to pull the trigger as early as possible but for once her radar was off, with 30 unforced errors flying off her racket.

Having stormed to a 5-0 lead in the second, the only concern was if Azarenka's nerve would hold but she was flawless in saving a break point to serve out and clinch the biggest victory of her life.

Sharapova was gracious in defeat. "She did everything better than I did today," the Russian admitted. "I had a good first couple of games, and that was about it.

"I was always the one running around like a rabbit, you know, trying to play catch-up all the time. As in any sport, you have your good days, you have your tough days and you have days where things just don't work out."
