VH1 100 Greatest Women in Rock & Roll (2012)

Postby TIfan » Sun Feb 05, 2012 5:38 am

Well here we go. Since VH1 treated women like crap during their "Greatest Artist" list, they did a list full of woman. The list will start Feb 12th I believe. I guess there a #1 spot battle between Madonna and Aretha. Hopefully Whitney, Tina, Janet, Etta, and Beyonce make it high on the list. What do you guys think?

Well there wouldn't be on a rock list. Mariah didn't do rock music [but then neither did the majority of that top 100]!

I hate how these countdowns have NOTHING to do with rock, or a/the rock era - just do a greatest female artists countdown, and nothing more.

I remember recently voting for Celine in three separate VH1 lists - rock wasn't one of them [I think one was the greatest females of the 90's, one greatest females ever and I can't remember the third].

Are there really not enough proper rock females that they have to add loads of non-rock females into that list? :o

Rock&Roll basically means during the beginning of the Billboard Hot 100 era to now. So Ella, Billie, and others should not be included. I think...

Tina
Whitney
Janet
Heart
Pat Benatar
Glady's Knight
Beyonce
Alicia Keys
..... all deserve top ten.
I already know Madonna and Aretha will make top 10, probably top 2 although I disagree with Madonna being so high.

All of these women I've quoted...why do they deserve to be placed in a top 100 greatest "rock" list? I really don't think any of them are rock...or am I missing something? :-?

Its not Rock music. Rock & Roll first of all came from R&B and they don't mean Rock artist, they mean the rock era of music which is the 50s-now.

It shouldn't be called in "Rock & Roll" - VH1 should just rename it the Billboard era or something. 75% of that list haven't touched "Rock & Roll" in their lives.

Rolling-stone does the same thing when they make a greatest of all list. These list makes artist like Sinatra, Holiday, Crosby, Fitzgerald, and many other become forgettable. Holiday is probably the most influential female artist in American History. But Aretha always gets the credit. Madonna is a legend but she said herself that she will be sexual just to sell records. I mean she did keep it real but there are women who take music serious and will not do whatever it takes to stay relavent (no disrespect). Diana Ross, although not as talented as some of the ladies, she changed music and had success that paved the way for Janet, Madonna, Michael, Beyonce, and Whitney but yet she always ranks so low or she's not making the list period. She hasn't even been inducted in the Rock of Fame as a solo artist.I forgot about her. Here's my top ten.... for rock&roll era. In terms of influence, originality, work ethic, talent, Performances, style, and success (small factor).

1. Heart
2. Diana Ross
3. Aretha Franklin
4. Tina Turner
5. Pat Benatar
6. Madonna
7. Whitney Houston
8. Beyonce
9. Glady's Knight
10. Alicia Keys

I know this list is somewhat bad but I just went from the top of my head and it brings something different then what we've been getting lol.

That's what I was saying!! The title of the list is misleading. Janet, Whitney, Beyonce...rock? please? They obviously do not know what rock is...

Janet had a rock hit and a rock Grammy nod. Its been called that for years. Look at Rock&Roll is a combination of gospel, soul, and blues, and everthing. When you say rock, you thinking about Queen, Led Z. and others. 2 different things.

Why are you picking on them when Madonna is in the top 10 of the 1999 list?

Isn't it titled "100 Greatest Women in Music"?

Judging by the fan voting thing at VH1, legends from pre-1990 won't be appearing. Bound to be some funbky choices in there, as 100 slots is a lot to fill for 1990-present.

Mimi Carey has never been as acclaimed as some, so her omission from the 1999 list wasn't too surprising.

Madonna has enjoyed much acclaim, so of course she'd place high on the last list.

I'd think this list was compiled in the same manner as the 100 Greatest Artists lists and the initial 100 Greatest Women (meaning, VH1 staffers did not vote themselves).
The most celebrated and important female artist of the last half-century-plus-who else but the one and only Madonna.

I just noticed Yoko was on the list!!! :o :o 8-) That is one lady that deserves to be recognised both for her music and controversial status.

Fan voting is also a no go, that is a stan magnet!

But in honestly, how do you decide what fits "rock" and not. I remember a few years ago, Rolling Stone did a list of the 100 greatest voices in rock. People like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Etta James yet Celine Dion, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand didn't. A few issues later when responding to people asking why those latter three didn't make the list, they responded with this list was for ROCK vocalists and that Celine, Frank and Babs have great voices, but "they don't rock". Yet Ray and Etta did? Hell, Barbra actually did flirt with rock in the early 1970's with the Barbra Joan Streisand album, more "rock" than anything Ray Charles or Etta James did in their career, but yet somehow they qualify as rock and she didn't? I don't follow.
