UK from Music Week

Columbia’s Leonard Cohen. With around 26,000 sales already and more than 15,000 units ahead of Sheeran’s album in third place, Cohen looks very likely to debut at two on the week’s final chart this Sunday to equal his highest-charting album in the UK, achieved by 1969’s Songs From A Room.

"I see Leonard Cohen's Old Ideas in the top 3 on nearly all countries' top 3 on ITunes... He's even preventing Lana Del Rey's Born To Die from reaching the top in a few. He's also doing well on Amazon and that's what I wonder about, because I haven't heard about him before and I usually know a lot of releases (even apart from the Rihanna-Katy Perry world  ) but this one kinda surprises me, especially since his last couple of albums did OK but not that it would explain such high numbers on all digital plattforms...

Someone knows why his album does so?"

^^ It's his first studio album in 8 years, though, so I'm not sure what other releases of his you're comparing it to...

And yes, the man is a legend!

His last 2 albums had those peaks:

Ten New Songs Dear Heather
Can: 4.............5
Aus: 67...........98
Aut: 5............13
Fin: 35...........22
Ger: 16...........19
Ire: 7.............5
NLD: 18...........34
Nor: 1.............2
Swe: 3.............8
UK: 26...........34
US: 143.........131

So it's clear that to see it in the top 3 of most countries on ITunes and Amazon is another relation... Especially an expected position in the top 10of the US, when his last 2 albums failed to reach the top 100!

Right, plus I think he can do what Tom Waits just did.

Columbia’s new Leonard Cohen album, Old Ideas, his first new studio effort in eight years, since 2004’s Dear Heather, hits retail, with estimates in the 30-35k range.

The performance of Old Ideas here in the USA is remarkable. Sony certainly made a big effort with full page ads in major papers, a Times Square billboard and some TV spots. Billboard confirms that Leonard will have his first ever US Top 10 next week - maybe even 3rd behind Adele and Lana Del Rey. A superstar at age 77!!

As expected, Old ideas straight to no 1 in the Norwegian album charts:
http://lista.vg.no/liste/topp-40-album/2

Cohen is a superstar in Norway, having his big commercial breakthrough already in 1985 with 'Various positions' and it is his 3rd no 1 in Norway, pls see charts positions here:
http://lista.vg.no/artist/leonard-cohen/2586

I'm your Man (1988) charted as no 1 for 16 weeks (!!) in 1988, creating some fuzz internationally as it sold 200k albums in Norway (4 times platinum)- surpassing the sales of Bad (Michael Jackson) released a few months earlier
