42. Beyoncé - 4
(R&B / USA)
Image
Favourite Tracks:
"Rather Die Young" and "Start Over".

Quite disappointed about this one... it's her worst album so far! You can enjoy some ballads (e.g., "Rather Die Young", "Best Thing I Never Had" and "Start Over") plus two or three up-tempo songs, and that's all. Still love her, though.
41. Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows - Have You Seen This Ghost?
(Darkwave / Germany)
Image
Favourite Tracks:
"Cornucopia d'Amour (Füllhorn der Liebe)" and "At the Stroke of Midnight Gently".

The Goddess of Beauty rules! Anna-Varney made a triumphal return this year, with the trilogy 'A Triptychon of Ghosts (or: El Sexorcismo de Anna-Varney Cantodea)', an interesting gothic-pagan project for 'her magical sexorcism in a dark ritual of ultimate neutralisation'. It's the second chapter of the trilogy, and my favourite one!
MUSIC SUGGESTION:
Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows - Cornucopia d'Amour (Füllhorn der Liebe)

You are right. They are mediocre. Hey, have you seen I recognized the similarities you suggested in crazycrazy's MAM thread.

OMG I like this Sopor, I can relate to this eating song.

Not exactly a fan, but I used to love her a lot! I own her whole solo discography and so... but I can't stand "4". :(

Ok, it's true. I dislike his vocals and the song has too repetitive lyrics. =\

On Sopor, I'm so happy you like them (her)! I love her lyrics and, particularly in this album, they're so funny!! :P "Cornucopia d'Amour (Füllhorn der Liebe)" is about compulsive eating when you're sad and being fat, "At the Stroke of Midnight Gently" is about some Cinderella-feeling (+ LOL at Anna-Varney singing about the size of her prince's penis), then her cover of "Holding Out For A Hero" - I love her tone in its last minutes -, among others.

However, "Les Fleurs du Mal" is Sopor's best album ever! :D

P.S.: Just saw your post about Caro, I'll reply it now! :D

TOP 40!

40. Austra - Feel It Break
(Electronic / Canada)
Image
Favourite Tracks:
"Lose It" and "The Choke".

"Feel It Break" is the debut album from Austra, and one of the best Electronic works of the last years! Obscure lyrics, ethereal atmosphere and sound experimentalisms: a must-have for any Alternative music listener.
39. Is Tropical - Native To
(Electronic / UK)
Image
Favourite Tracks:
"Lies" and "The Greeks".

They don't love you, they just need a little sex sometimes! Is Tropical's "Native To" works with lots of genres: it goes from rock to a heavily 80's electronic all time! It's amusing, for sure - a perfect album for recreation time!
MUSIC SUGGESTION:
Is Tropical - The Greeks

38. PJ Harvey - Let The England Shake
(Alternative Rock / UK)
Image
Favourite Tracks:
"The Glorious Land" and "Let England Shake".

The Mercury Prize 2011 winner and one of the best works by PJ Harvey... but Album Of The Year?! Nop! PJ's 'White Chalk' (2007) is quite better than this one, which, curiously, got much more media attention! I guess it's because of the political lyrics and her genuine way to criticize the horrors of war, though.
37. Natalia Kills - Perfectionist
(Pop / UK)
Image
Favourite Tracks:
"Zombie" and "Wonderland".

Natalia Kills is completely different from mostly of the new pop sensations out there: she's dark! She sings about killing her boyfriend, suicide and zombie things and, surprisingly, it still sounds accessible! Who would guess? I really like this album, plus its cover is one of my favourites of the year!
MUSIC SUGGESTION:
Natalia Kills - Zombie

The youngest act...
35. Birdy - Birdy
(Folk / UK)
Image
Favourite Tracks:
"People Help The People" and "White Winter Hymnal".

It's hard to believe she's so young: only 15 years old! I really love her voice and I can't wait for a studio album of original songs. Birdy's version of "White Winter Hymnal" was definitely my Holiday Song in 2011.
36. James Blake - James Blake
(Electronic / UK)
Image
Favourite Tracks:
"Limit To Your Love" and "I Never Learnt To Share".

Calm vocals, minimal beats and extreme electronic experimentalism. 'James Blake' is an album for headphones: you always find something new each time you listen to it. An amazing experience!
MUSIC SUGGESTION:
James Blake - Limit To Your Love

I loved James "Wilhelm Scream" on first listen, the album has a few beauties, not really absorbed the whole thing yet though. I will though, I love his sound, gorgeous voice! :D

PJ Harvey is nice! I discovered her material through the forum.

What I've heard from Kills is a bit disapointing, tbh...

I didn't know Birdy was that young :o I enjoy her "White Winter Hymnal" as well.

I must check Blake's material. The "Limit to love" video is interesting. Thanks for providing all the links ;)

Thanks for your thoughts!! :D Glad you like PJ and Birdy!

James Blake is unusual, so it took me a while to like his songs. Peharps you may dislike his album at first - try again! 8-)

There's nothing really impressive about her, it's the same old plastic/commercial pop - but a good pastime now and then... so, I kinda expected that.

34. M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
(Electronic / France)
Image
Favourite Tracks:
"Midnight City" and "Splendor".

I can't watch a music video or listen to a M83 song without thinking of children. I think it's their defining image for this era: innocent faces, dreamlike places and mysterious music videos (specially "Midnight City", one of the best songs/videos of 2011 and my favourite song off this album)! However, despite all electronic concept, this shouldn't be that long: 22 tracks are just too much.
33. Dillon - This Silence Kills
(Alternative / Brazil)
Image
Favourite Tracks:
"Thirteen Thirty-Five" and "Tip Tapping".

'This Silence Kills' is the debut album from this Brazilian-born German songwriter-singer. It's such a catchy and relaxing album, plus she has a tender voice. P.S.: her first single, "Thirteen Thirty-Five" is available for free download on Last.FM.
MUSIC SUGGESTION:
M83 - Midnight City

Indeed, last M83 album is too long for me too. He should concentrate to finish some songs as I found them unfinished in some ways.

Good to see Austra on the list and marvelous James Blake - his album is really hard to listen that I think I didn't listen to the whole LP at once.

Oh and you've put Zola Jesus album there. I found it very very interesting and unique mainly because of her powerful voice.

I saw her live this Winter, she's incredible live - her voice sounds so clean and pure! That's why I've bought the ticket for her next gig this year!
