After reaching number one for the first time last month, Leona Lewis and Avicii are among twenty-four fallers this time, diving ten places back to their number eleven entry position - leaving three of December’s new entries in a closely-contested battle to become my 190th chart-topper. In the end, Sweden’s Lykke Li finishes in third place, climbing from number 15 with the recent Belgian number one “I Follow Rivers”, while Denmark’s Agnes Obel improves by one place on her peak with “Riverside”, as “Just So” is this month’s Rapid Riser, racing up from 29 to number two. And last month’s number two ascends one place to the top for New Yorker Lana Del Rey - “Video Games”. Two former number ones by David Guetta complete the top five - “Without You” slides to five, while “Titanium” moves back up to four - and among eight other climbers, there’s someone else who had a number one recently, and is now doing well with the follow-up. Basto’s “Again And Again” moves up sixteen places to number 18. His chart-topping “Gregory’s Theme” hangs on in for a tenth month, down four notches at 39 - but the preceding Chartbuster from Sebastian Cruz and Miryel, is now the longest laster. “Chasing Dreams”, one of my favourite tracks of the past year, falls five at 28. A rather less successful Chartbuster was “Loca People” - Sak Noel failed to improve on his number 15 debut, and it’s now the fastest faller, plummeting fifteen places to number 31. Hopefully Barbara Dex isn’t about to similarly disappoint - December’s Chartbuster “Before” is in at 15 this month, four places above one of the biggest-selling singles of the past year in Belgium and Holland. Gotye featuring Kimbra crash in at 19 with “Somebody That I Used To Know”. Also making her chart debut is Katy Perry - “The One That Got Away” sneaks in at 40. But, thirty places higher, the most impressive of this month’s four new entries is a second hit for Lana Del Rey. The other track of her “Video Games” single, “Blue Jeans” comes straight in at number ten. Could she replace herself at number one in the months ahead?

Six former breakers reappear this month, for a variety of reasons. Firstly, it’s the festive season, and I’ve been hearing a lot of former Christmas hits by Band Aid, Ice MC and the Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl - although perhaps “Do They Know It’s Christmas”, “It’s Christmas Day” and “Fairytale Of New York” aren’t necessarily the most likely to race back into the top forty in the months ahead! But what about Lily Allen’s album track from a couple of years ago, “Who’d Have Known”? That has made its way into the UK top ten in the last few weeks, albeit almost smothered under all kinds of sh-omething. Thirdly, and most tragically, the suicides of two performers have been reported in recent weeks. Both Malina Olinescu of Romania and Ludwig Hirsch of Austria sadly chose to end their lives - in virtually identical ways - aged 37 and 65 respectively. Their best works, “Eu Cred” and “Marmor, Stein Und Eisen Bricht”, are back in the breakers. In a poor month for new releases, only four tracks arrive there for the first time - and the majority are not exactly “new” recordings. “Heartbroken” is the fourth single from Hooverphonic’s 2010 album, and already looks more likely than the third one, “One Two Three”, to give them a trio of hits in next month’s top forty. “Je Veux” also comes from a 2010 album - by Zaz, 31-year-old French jazz singer Isabelle Geffroy - and has enjoyed a frequent, or almost continuous, presence in various European charts ever since its release. And, although the album containing “Pumped Up Kicks” wasn’t released until more recently, that track by Foster The People also dates back to 2010 - but could still be on the way to my top forty in 2012! However, the Chartbuster, guaranteed to enter in February, is by someone born in 1981. He is “one of Holland's most promising new talents”, who is “known for his broad, energetic sound that is so perfectly combined with a musical depth acquired by his years of piano study.” - according to his website. Well, he must be doing something right - as his single has just become only the eleventh purely instrumental number one in forty-seven years in his homeland, and the first for almost five years. My Record of the Month for January 2012 is Sandro Silva and Quintino, with “Epic”.

I hadn't heard (of) that.....it hasn't reached the top forty even in the Netherlands. On first listen, pleasant enough, but I can't say that it instantly grabs me like some of her other hits.

I can think of a couple of duets between the living and the dead that have reached the breakers, but I don't believe any have ever got into my top forty.....

Gotye on the start of a good chartrun i hope.
Not many tracks have entered my chart at number nineteen - the last ten, the earliest going back several years, have generally gone on to do well. often reaching a high peak:

ONLY IF I - Kate Ryan 19 04 04 04 04 10 13 17 25 27 31
THE SONGS THAT WE SING - Charlotte Gainsbourg 19 10 07 05 05 05 05 09 19 33
RUN - Milk Inc. 19 04 04 04 04 04 06 10 15 22 34
LOST - Roger Sanchez 19 08 07 06 03 06 09 17 30
VOYAGE VOYAGE - Kate Ryan 19 14 11 09 08 09 18 23 25 26 36
SAMSON - Regina Spektor 19 14 11 12 21 31 37 39
BUBBLY - Colbie Caillat 19 14 12 22 28 39
WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD - Axwell featuring Bob Sinclar 19 17 15 21 29
A HAPPY PLACE - Katie Melua 19 03 03 08 08 09 22 37 39
IN LOVE FOR A WHILE - Anna Rossinelli 19 14 13 27 28 38

So Gotye looks more than likely to climb quite a bit higher, and could probably remain in my top forty until at least the summer!

I wrote:However, the Chartbuster, guaranteed to enter in February, is by someone born in 1981.
And that's the year which, half-way through the month, is now revisited. It was one of the first I previously covered here - but rather less fully - almost two years ago. Then, I just prepared a "top 81 of '81".....and only sixty-seven of those were anywhere on YouTube! However, I have now expanded it so that, like every other year from 1978 to 2009 (except, for reasons already explained, 2004) it is a top hundred. And, while quite a few of my selections might fall somewhere along the scale between "obscure" and "unlikely to have ever been heard of by almost anybody outside Ireland") an incredible ninety-three out of a hundred are now available there!

To complete the usual six-hour journey back through time today, I was able to find - well, fairly close - approximations for the Bards at 8 and 73, Brendan Shine at 29 and the Tweets at 36 ......but there didn't really seem to be anything sufficiently like the tracks from the Fureys at 23, Brendan Shine at 31, and Gali Atari and Menny Berger at 50. So I have instead included quite a few links to extended versions, rather than some of the more well-known radio edits. Why was that particularly easy for 1981? Well, as is probably quite well-remembered by those who were listening to music back then, it seemed to be the international year of......the medley!

No fewer than twelve medleys have made it into my top hundred of the year - several of which seem to be surrounding Toni Basil at 63 - but, in my defence, there really were many more than this appearing in the UK charts, from top to bottom, in 1981. And only one features in my top ten - which regular participants and readers of the thirty-years-ago Retro thread will recognise. Otherwise, the chart is somewhat dominated by UK and Ireland hits, because those were the only charts I was regularly tuning in to, as a 16-17 year old, while studying for "O" and "A" levels at school. But there are several continental hits I discovered later - and my top. track of the year is one of those!

Here, then, are all my favourites from thirty-one years ago.

Indeed - although I doubt I would even recognise "Boys and Girls" if I heard it on the radio. It wasn't even a top forty hit - even though I'm sure many "Doctor Who" fans, like myself, would have bought it for that B-side.

Yes - this, and "I Like Trucking", two places lower at 97, were two sides of the same 7" single, illustrated here:

http://www.45cat.com/record/resl102&recordcomment=52050

Seeing the note there that it was "only" performed by Pamela Stephenson puzzled me briefly. However, on reflection, she is indeed the only one that can really be heard (on more than one set of vocals?), with the others just miming for comic effect.

I couldn't remember whether the single version was longer than what was in the television episode (and on all of the available YouTube links!) - but my files record that it runs to 2m08s, so there's not much more - probably just a longer fade-out. I'm fairly sure that, pleasingly, there was no added audience laughter.....

After entering at number two in December and climbing to number one in January, Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” now falls to number three - and my 191st chart-topper is a track which, although it appears on the 2010 album “Philharmonics”, was originally released as a single in 2009! “Just So” was then more enigmatically credited only to “Obel” - but it’s Agnes Obel, now 30 years old, who rises to the top. Several Scandinavian artists have reached my number one over the years, however, and she’s not the first Dane to reach the summit - Brigitte Nielsen was there in the early 1990’s with “How Could You Let Me Go”, as were Los Umbrellos a few years later with “No Tengo Dinero”. Only seven other hits move up this time - Lykke Li takes the runner-up position with “I Follow Rivers”, Basto! advances a further six places to number 12 with “Again And Again”, and Amy MacDonald is up four at 25 with “Love Love”, all in their third month.....while there are healthy climbs for all four of last month‘s newcomers. Lana Del Rey’s first two hits are now side by side in the top five, as “Blue Jeans” ascends six places to number four - while Gotye and Kimbra are just behind her, with “Somebody That I Used To Know” racing up fourteen places from last month’s number 19. The former Chartbuster from Barbara Dex, “Before”, advances four places to 11, while this month’s Rapid Riser is Katy Perry. “The One That Got Away” just sneaked in at number 40 last time, but now zooms up twenty-four places to number 16. The highest of five new entries is last month’s Chartbuster, the recent Dutch number one by Sandro Silva and Quintino. “Epic” is straight in at number 14 - but just three places below that is another chart debut, for young Belgians School Is Cool, and “The World Is Gonna End Tonight”. Coldplay get a third hit with their recent UK number one “Paradise” - new at 36, it has some way to go if it is to match their top five successes with “In My Place” and “Viva La Vida” - while both Hooverphonic and Lady GaGa now have three hits in my top forty at the same time, all from their latest albums. From “The Night Before”, “Heartbroken” arrives at 21, joining the title track and “Anger Never Dies” for the Belgian group - and, from “Born This Way”, “Marry The Night” enters at 40, some way below “You And I” and “The Edge Of Glory” for the New Yorker. Among twenty-seven tracks moving down this month, the longest laster and fastest faller are both former Chartbusters - “Chasing Dreams” by Sebastian Cruz featuring Miryel and “Here With Me” by Lasgo, at 29 and 37 respectively.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of the recent death, at the age of 37, of Kerry McGregor - who, despite being significantly paralysed since a teenager, had a successful career in acting and music, and became well-known to a wide audience by reaching the final stages of the third series of “X Factor”. Her quirky song “Yodel In The Canyon Of Love” (don’t ask what it means.....) was nearly chosen to represent the UK in the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest, despite being written and recorded a couple of years earlier, credited to Eden Fizz. My number one at the beginning of 1998, it now returns to the top 40 breakers - in which there are also seven brand new potential hits. All of these are by acts who have impressed me before - although some are now in interesting new collaborations! - and the only one who hasn’t reached the top forty is Selena Gomez. Together with her band the Scene, she nearly got there with “Naturally”, and might now succeed with “Love You Like A Love Song”. Adam Young has had two top ten hits - “Fireflies” and “Vanilla Twilight”, as Owl City - and now teams up with Armin Van Buuren, looking for a seventh top twenty success with “Youtopia”. One of his previous chart entries was with Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who now joins Bob Sinclar on, er..... “Rock With You”. This could give that Frenchman a sixth hit - while another is looking for a third with “Big In Japan”. Martin Solveig, with Dragonette, was at number one at this time last year with “Hello” - while Avicii has been there more recently, with “Penguin” and its vocal variations. He could soon follow that up with “Levels” - and another former chart-topper is Emma Hewitt. “Colours” doesn’t involve Dash Berlin, on whose number one with “Waiting” she sung, but it could give her another hit. And the lady who is guaranteed a third simultaneous hit next month - and it wouldn’t be surprising if they were all at the top end - used to be known as Lizzy Grant, but is now famous under a quite different name. Even in rest homes around the world, the elderly are probably asking each other, “Who is this ‘Danny La Rue’ woman....?” I received her new LP yesterday - the CD and download version of which is expected to top the UK album chart this week - and the title track, and current single, is the new Chartbuster. My Record of the Month for February 2012 is Lana Del Rey - “Born To Die”.

In October 2010, I wrote:
“We No Speak Americano” is only the seventh UK number one to also reach number one in my chart, this rare feat having previously only been achieved by Blondie, Jennifer Rush, Europe, DJ Sammy and Yanou featuring Do, Coldplay and Lady GaGa.
This certainly doesn't happen often - only four times in the last twenty-one years of the previous century, and, until now, three more times in this one. But this week, completely unexpectedly, it has happened again, as a track that entered my chart at number one last November has now gone to number one in the UK!

Congratulations to David Guetta and Sia, joining a very short, and now updated, list:!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NUMBER ONES IN CZB'S CHART THAT ALSO REACHED NUMBER ONE IN THE U.K.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
01 THE TIDE IS HIGH Blondie
02 THE POWER OF LOVE / SI TU ERES MI HOMBRE Jennifer Rush
03 THE FINAL COUNTDOWN Europe
04 HEAVEN DJ Sammy and Yanou featuring Do
05 VIVA LA VIDA Coldplay
06 POKER FACE Lady GaGa
07 WE NO SPEAK AMERICANO Yolanda Be Cool featuring D-Cup
08 TITANIUM David Guetta featuring Sia
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interestingly, despite the inherently slow-moving nature of my chart, "Titanium" is the third UK chart-topper (the others being "The Final Countdown" and "Heaven") that got to number one there before getting to number one in the UK!
Interesting! I like all songs except for "We No Speak Americano".
"Titanium" is epic, thanks to Sia, the best song Guetta has ever produced IMO. :wink:
