Lady Gaga reveals she suffered from bulimia as a teenager

Speaking to a live audience in the gymnasium of Brentwood School in LA, the 25-year-old star confessed her eating disorder in public for the first time.

The singer was being interviewed by the journalist and author Maria Shriver about bullying at school, as part of a new annual Young Women's conference 'It's Our Turn'. She told Shriver that she had been "pretty delusional" at school, that she wanted to "change the world and bullying in America".

But it wasn't until a member of the audience, a school student, stood up and asked her if she, too, had ever struggled with "body issues" that Lady Gaga moved on to the subject of her bulimia.

"I used to throw up all the time in high school. So I'm not that confident. And maybe it's easier for me to talk about it now because I don't do it anymore," she said.

"I wanted to be a skinny little ballerina but I was a voluptuous little Italian girl whose dad had meatballs on the table every night," Lady Gaga revealed. "I used to come home and say, 'Dad, why do you always give us this food? I need to be thin.' And he'd say, 'Eat your spaghetti.'"

When Shriver asked her how she got through it, she answered that she was grateful that she had had to quit to save her voice.

"The acid on your vocal chords -- it's very bad. But for those of you who don't sing, you maybe don't have that excuse until it's too late. It's very dangerous," she said.

The singer, who impressed the fashion industry with a dress made of meat, also spoke about how deceptive images in magazines can be for young girls.

"Every video I'm in, every magazine cover, they stretch you; they make you perfect. It's not real life... The dieting wars have got to stop."

It seems like with all these kind of stories she's trying to win over some people as fans to "represent" them. It feels like everything that she does is an act... :-?

I'm not buying it!

I feel the same, it likes she wants to present herself as the "superwoman" that conquered all deceases, troubles and hate that is in the world today and is the living example for being brave and be yourself.

I like Gaga, I think she is an amazing talented woman, but it's all too much now, less is more, even for her "personal issue stories"

You buy into something when it feels real, like most things Gaga came out with pre-BTW was not real or true.
There will be more to come once the new tour about 2 start.

I don't believe this either. So she has lupus, nightmares, was bullied in school, always felt like a freak, dreams the devil wants to get get, ghosthunts the hotels she stays in, she loathed reality...

What's next? I really hope Shea not making stuff hope. It's so disrespectful for the people that actually suffer from it.

She's so annoying now. Oh, I still remember the days she was an interesting star and you could enjoy "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" without the weirdest things she does and says now.

I agree. Take the image and all the overhype away and just focus on the tunes and you have a great pop star, but she is hellbent on trying to outshock and outdo herself, and in the internet age where you can find people having sex with horses on Google, you're not going to cultivate "the most shocking thing ever".

Geez,all the sceptical comments. She just said she wanted to be thin, big deal, which high school girl doesn't. If you look at her old photos and videos she looked chunky in high school most time but there are some where she was drastically thin, like that one video where she plays piano and sings at some contest. I like what she said about her home food lol

Off-topic but this thread has just reminded me of how low her popularity is right now. And the sad thing is that most of that negativity isn't due to her music.

Because she's let everything overshadow her music. Her music is fine to a degree, then add all the crazyness and that just diminishes some okish pop songs and turns them into a mess.
