Image
Debut Album: Songs from the Tainted Cherry Tree (2010)
Breakthrough Single/ Biggest Hit: "Once" (#1 UK 2010)

English singer-songwriter Diana Vickers is #48. She came to fame as a semi-finalist on the 2008 X-Factor competition. Her debut album was released in 2010, the lead single "Once" quickly becoming a UK #1 that same year. Two more singles followed, "My Wicked Heart" reaching the top 15. A second album is due in 2012 and will go a long way to determining where she goes from here.

One of the biggest rock acts of 2011 next

47. Foster The People (159 points)
Voted By: tdc2000, abdeeaikawa, nickf1, Tripolis, NothingFails, lambforever, Formusic, Blondini

Image
Debut Album: "Torches" (2011)
Breakthrough Single/ Biggest Hit: "Pumped Up Kicks" (#18 UK 2011, #3 USA)

Foster The People, a rock band out of Los Angeles, formed in 2009 and had a breakthrough in a big way with the lead single from "Torches", "Pumped Up Kicks", which was one of the biggest rock hits of last year and then crossed over to pop very soon after. Three more singles have followed, led by "Helena Beat" and the new single "Don't Stop". They are already having a good 2012 as well. The second album should come soon, I'd bet.

Appropriate here since he just won a Grammy last night

46. Bon Iver (163 points)
Voted By: hugom2c, NothingFails, lambforever, Formusic, sbk, crazycrazy, fearlessswift

Image
Debut Album: For Emma, Forever Ago (2008)
Breakthrough Single: "Skinny Love" (2008)
Biggest Hit: "Blood Bank" (#37 UK 2009)

American singer-songwriter Bon Iver has yet to really have a big pop hit, but he has a huge accolade in his favor now as he won the 2012 Best New Artist Grammy. His career actually started in 2008 with his first album (released independently) and breakthrough song "Skinny Love". His second album "Bon Iver, Bon Iver" was released in 2011. He has a lot of buzz around him and now the industry is behind him. Maybe 2012 will be his true breakthrough year.

#45 also had a nice 2011

45. Ed Sheeran (165 points)
Voted By: Tripolis, Lewis17. Stacey3, stevyy, matthew_dixon, king_oxymoron, Kirill

Image
Debut Album: + (2011)
Breakthrough Single/ Biggest Hit: "The A Team" (#3 UK 2011)

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is #45 in this poll. He had one of the breakthrough hits of 2011 in "The A Team", a Top 3 hit in the UK, followed up by two more Top 5 hits "You Need Me, I Don't Need You" and "Lego House". His fourth hit "Drunk" is a current UK hit. His sound seems to fit the moment very well, sorta doing a male version of the Adele sound that has dominated the past twelve months. One of the new male soloists to watch.

I'm surprised Ed Sheeran's ranked so low - he's definitely one of the biggest recent names - and one of the best if you ask me.

28 Foster The People (Houdini was also a single - if not promoted as one)
8 Diana Vickers

Janelle Monae's biggest hit is a song she barely appears on yet gets a co-credit for: We Are Young by Fun. (was #1 on US iTunes last week).

Diana is great in her own little way and seems to be really developing as an artist which is fantastic. I'm with Matthew on Ed - too low.. a brilliant newcomer and shining star..

UK DJ first

44. Calvin Harris (168 points)
Voted By: tdc2000, nickf1, Shorty, SholasBoy, king_oxymoron, sbk, Star

Image
Debut Album: "I Created Disco" (2007)
Breakthrough Single: "Acceptable in the 80s" (2007)
Biggest Hit (solo): "I'm Not Alone" (#1 UK 2009)

Scottish DJ Calvin Harris comes in at #44 on this chart, his debut album released in 2007 and producing two immediate hits in "Acceptable in the 80s" and "The Girls". His sound became in demand, leading to a #1 collaboration with Dizzie Rascal on "Dance wiv Me" (and, more recently, "We Found Love" with Rihanna). His second album "Ready For The Weekend" contains his only solo UK #1, "I'm Not Alone" and the #3 "Ready For The Weekend". In his five year career, he has nine UK Top 10 and 3 #1 songs, two as collaborations. He definitely has the sound of the moment in 2012.

American band next

43. MGMT (170 points)
Voted By: tdc2000, FreakyFlyBry, nickf1, hugom2c, stevyy, NothingFails, Formusic, Blondini, crazycrazy

Image
Debut Album (self released): Climbing To New Lows (2005)
Breakthrough Single: "Time To Pretend" (2008)
Biggest Hit: "Kids" (#16 UK 2008)

American rock band MGMT have found more success in the UK and Europe than in their homeland so far. They had a couple of EPs before their breakthrough album "Oracular Spectacular" in 2008, an album that produced three rock hits "Time To Pretend", "Electric Feel" and "Kids". Their second studio album "Congratulations" in 2010 had less success, with only one song "Flash Delirium" cracking the UK top 200. Could they be victims of the sophomore jinx?

To the top 40 today

42. Boys Like Girls (172 points)
Voted By: tdc2000, FreakyFlyBry, abdeeaikawa, lambforever, Formusic, musiclover, fearlessswift, Dingdong123

Image
Debut Album: Boys Like Girls (2006)
Breakthrough Single: "Hero/ Heroine" (2007)
Biggest Hit: "Love Drunk" (#44 UK 2009)

American rock band Boys Like Girls formed in 2005 and released their debut album in 2006, featuring their breakthrough hit "Hero/ Heroine" and follow-up "The Great Escape". Their second album produced even more widespread success, led by their biggest hit worldwide in "Love Drunk" and biggest US hit "Two Is Better Than One" (f/ Taylor Swift). Like Blink 182 before them, they bridge the pop/ rock divide to wide success. A third album may be due soon.

From TV to the charts...

41. Glee Cast (186 points)
Voted By: FreakyFlyBry, abdeeaikawa, Tripolis, Shorty, JSparksFan, stevyy, matthew_dixon, Formusic, Kirill, fearlessswift, Tiger

Image
Debut album: Glee: The Music, Volume 1 (2009)
Breakthrough Single/ Biggest Hit: "Don't Stop Believin'" (#2 UK 2009)

From the TV show that started on Fox in 2009, the Glee Cast have now released eight soundtrack albums, three compilation albums, four EPs, and 205 singles. Beginning with their hit Journey cover in 2009, they have also set a record for most charting singles on the Billboard chart with 189 appearences, 50 in the top 40. They're known for mostly covers, but do have a few original songs, most notably probably "Loser Like Me" last year. The show is now finishing up its fourth season.

Im surprised the Glee Cast did so well - and that Matthew voted them!

I like MGMT as far as those three singles go, but I am definitely more of a fan of Calvin from this lot!

aaw Glee.. so awesome. I really love like 75% of what they do on their show.

MGMT are simply outstanding and are not praised enough. Time to pretend is one of the best songs of recent times.
