Its not BS at all - Coty released a statement three years ago claiming sales of over $850m.

In that time, she's released additional top-selling fragrances. $1billion is a cautious estimate.

Not that it matters to a poll about music.
Oh yes and her menager let her brake her ass in the colosseum to ammass in 4 year neither a quarter of what she would have get putting a name on the fragrance? Do you believe at horse fly too?lol
I am not stating that she pocketed $1 billion - I am saying that HER fragrances grossed $1 billion.

END.

I would have liked to see Whitney above Beyonce Gaga Mariah and Adele
Of course I'm happy with the number 1

There's one thing I don't understand, why is Britney so low? It's hard to believe that Gaga, (in 3 or 4 years) has achieved more than Britney in almost 15 years

It's simply because Gaga is more popular than Brit at the moment!!

Let's remember that who usually votes these polls sometimes has a short memories....

Cos Bieber didn't feature? ^^

(PS: TOTAL joke and if you don't appreciate it I'll remove - the only dislike I have for Biebs is that I teach 28 kids; 17 are girls and over half of them are obsessed with him, so I get him all damn day.)

I'm not surprised that they (VH1) placed Britney that low, they absolutely ignored or barely played her recent videos (2007-2011) she should be behind those big divas definitely.

To be honest, speaking of the last 10 years, her influence has been incomparable o.O This is why I don't understand the list haha.. I would put Brit as one of the top 3 in my list for the last decade.

The only position I could possibly agree with is the #1 & #2 Madonna & Mariah...after that the whole list is a mess! The fact that Ke$ha made the Top 50 (and I like her discredits this list).

If this was suppose to represent the last 20 years in music Adele & Gaga are still extremely too high! Britney should be in the top 10, and she should be above Beyonce, considering she sold more albums, broke more records, has the highest 1st week sale by any female act, every show she appears in ratings increase (she basically saved, How I Met Your Mother, it was about to be cancel until she appeared, and ratings increased), like it or not she started this wave of Disney pop stars like Miley, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, etc. & what people call the greatest comeback in music history, that brought one of the highest grossing tours (male or female) in music industry history! Don't forget Billboard named her the highest selling female of the last decade. In 2005 you go to a classroom and ask people to name a pop star, they will say Britney.

If this was suppose to be a list of the last 20 years it should have gone:

1.Madonna
2.Mariah
3.Whitney
4.Celine
5.Janet
6.Britney
7.Beyonce
8.Shania
9.Mary J
10.Alanis

If it was a US only list, that'd be fine. But if you was to consider the impact of each artist on an global scale for the entire 20 years, the list would differ from that [for e.g. Shania wouldn't feature in my opinion, Mary J definitely wouldn't and neither would Alanis]. I wouldn't rank Madonna either at #1 for the last 20 years.

^^^^ Surely Shania SHOULD be on the list on a global scale? She broke SERIOUS ground with country music outside of the US (albeit it was very much redone for Europe to sound more rocky).

But yeah, wouldn't put Madge at the top for the last 20 years.. Mariah for US, Brit WW. Spice Girls should be up there somewhere too - there is more to music than sales; these two artists had more influence over teenage girls at the turn of the century than artists like GaGa, Rihanna, Beyonce will have in their entire career. It's just the culture that the world was in..

Well imo Shania put Country music on the map in a global scale. Mary J was declared the queen on Hip-Hop, and well with Alanis I'm really just going by sales to be honest.

You'd place Britney Spears at #1 for the last 20 years? In my opinion, for the last 20 years, Madonna should still rank ahead of Britney. And Madonna shouldn't even be #1! Britney would round out the top 5 nicely.

The #1 slot for the last 20 years should go to either Celine or Mariah - I'd give the edge to Celine for having remained on top of her game for longer. Like Madonna, Whitney also saw her best days were before 1992 [despite The Bodyguard]. In my opinion, for the last 20 years [1990/1991 onwards]...

1. Mariah/Celine
2. Mariah/Celine
3. Madonna
4. Whitney Houston
5. Britney Spears
6. Janet Jackson

Shania didn't break down nearly as many barriers as some like to think; her biggest hits were pop oriented singles. And despite being labelled as a country crossover artist - which she was - her biggest success came with Come On Over, which was more pop than country. Shania never charted a country single in the UK for e.g. without first charting a pop single - all of her biggest hits were pop singles - That Don't Impress Me Much, From This Moment On, You're Still The One, Man! I feel Like A Woman, Up!

To me, simply saying Shania put country music on the map is a short sighted comment, especially considering the fact that Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline all recorded chart successes a long time before Shania.

In my opinion, Mary J Blige is a real influence on US R&B. She has dramatically influenced the direction of R&B in the US and worldwide, but I think that internationally, Alicia Keys has had a bigger impact over the last 20 years.

I didn't say Shania put it on the map, I said that she broke ground globally - no one was listening to it until she came along.

Yes Dolly and Patsy were a huge deal, but not at the same time as her.

Celine.. I wouldn't.. She dominated the mid/late 90s sales wise and her voice is amazing.. Hmm I've lost my point, maybe I would rank her just after Brit^^

And yes, I stand by Brit.. She has little genuine talent vocally, but the world worshipped her.

-------

My list would be:

1. Britney
2. Celine
3. Mariah (WW)
4. Madge
5. Shania
6. Beyonce (including DC work)
7. Alicia

-------

On another note, I think the list is a nice idea, but they should definitely be a bit more specific haha! IF they mean for 2012, I would understand it! But they can't possibly!

I agree with most of your comment until your last sentence, how can you say such a thing that mariah and brit have influenced more girls than bey in her whole career, Beyonce's career is not over so you don't know what's going to happen and Beyonce has been an empowering force for girls especially changing their mindset in terms of being INDEPENDENT WOMEN and SINGLE LADIES, I mean how many times have you heard a girl saying she's an independent woman and they have said it cus of Bey and DC, plus bootylicious, DC and Bey managed to get that word in the dictionary (a feat no other artist can say they've also done). All you have to do is go down a street and see how many shops (hair salons, beauty shops) are a variation on bootylicious, there's loads, hence proving how influential Bey/DC are.
Also, the whole Single Ladies craze was a WORLDWIDE trend in terms of dancing. The video has been in the Top 5 best music video's of all time on basically every list and the imitations of the dance were mostly done by women as Beyonce empowered them.
Then there's Run The World (Girls), where there phrase who run this motha and who run the world has become massively popular now because of that song.
However, I did notice that you said the time frame of the turn of the century so if you were just refering to that time then obviously brit and mariah were the most influential then but now, Bey is up there with them.

^^^ I was talking about the Spice Girls and Brit.

And seriously, the impact that those two artists had is incomparable. Beyonce is fantastic, yes, but Britney took the media to a whole new level. She was everything to the industry from the start of her career until she recovered from her breakdown.

Not fussed about the rest of your post - stuff like the SL dance (though I love it) isn't really on the same scale as what I'm talking about ^^

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say or shout "who run this motha?" here in Brooklyn, and I've seen some ghettofabulous things in Brooklyn.
Maybe it's an English thing...just wanted to point that out.

Also, that bootylicious thing...it's so funny.
Now I know why girls were walking with stuff like that (or the word "juicy") on their asses.

Okay, I'm not taking anything away from brit as I was suprised she wasnt higher but Brit was influential at the what late90's early 2000's and in all honestly she isnt half of what she was now.
However, Beyonce is a different story, Beyonce has got more influential as her career has gone on, so I can see why she was put so high in the list as she has kept consistency.
But I dont get your comment regarding SL, how is it not on the level your talking about when it was a worldwide craze that is refered to being one of the best music video's of all time and the best of the 2000's decade, I mean to produce something like the SL video that will be remembered for years to come contributes massively to an artist being influential as it makes them stand the test of time through their music. Just like Britney with hit me baby one more time, I think they are on the same level now.
