Recognizing Madonna's Super Bowl Show
February 02, 2012

This Sunday the New York Giants will face the New England Patriots at the Super Bowl XLVI for a chance to win one of the greatest American sports honors: the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Also on Sunday, the one, the only Madonna will undertake one of the music business’ top annual honors: headlining the Super Bowl’s world-famous halftime show.

In honor of Madonna’s much anticipated weekend performance, as well her new music video debuting on FOX’s American Idol this week, and all other wonderful things happening in Madge’s world, the RIAA’s historic Gold & Platinum program takes this opportunity to salute her significant career G&P accomplishments:

With total G&P tallies reaching 64 million total certified units, Madonna is the 16th most certified artist in RIAA G&P history and the second highest certified female solo artist behind Barbara Streisand.

Since first certifying her debut album “Madonna” Gold in 1983, America’s Material Girl has gone on to earn two RIAA Diamond Awards denoting more than 10 million copies sold of “Like a Virgin” (Sire, 1984) and “Immaculate Collection” (Sire, 1990).

Amongst her numerous additional honors, Madonna has earned 19 separate Gold album awards, 17 Platinum album certifications and 12 multi-Platinum certs. Additionally, her 2008 single “4 Minutes to Save the World” (Warner Bros.) has sold more than two million downloads to earn a 2x multi-Platinum plaque, while her 2005 jam “Hung Up” (Reprise) has sold more than one million downloads to go Platinum.

And while we of course anticipate many more G&P certs from Madonna in the future, those awards may come sooner than later, judging from the fortune of past halftime performers. As we noted on our blog last year, The Black Eyed Peas 2011 halftime performance boosted their music sales 25 percent week-over-week following the Super Bowl, while songs played at the big game, or in its commercials, bumped the album sales of Eminem, Kenny G, Guns 'n' Roses, Elton John, Boz Scaggs and Usher up an approximate 20 percent, according to SoundScan figures reported in Variety.

Best of luck this weekend to Madonna, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots!

7xP one year after release!
This could be the first Diamond album since Usher's Confessions - released March 2004.

However, Confessions went 7xp after just 7 months and 9xp after just 14 months! It eventually went Diamond after 4½ years.

Confessions had high sales in short time, while 21 has lower sales but is selling extremely consistent... Similiar to how Shania Twain did with Come On Over  .

Funny how you still wonder if 21 can really reach Diamond when it should be almost a given now  ...

^^^ Nothing's a given... do you know how many album's triumphed through 9x P and then stopped. I certainly don't think this will be the case Adele as I believe she'll go diamond this year actually.

Bottom line, though, is that nothing's a given for any artist and any time.

That's all!
"Take A Bow"... Rihanna's ONLY ballad to go #1 on the Hot 100 (also topped the R&B Chart)... Great deed for her most epic ballad!!!

Actually I can give you the probably biggest example of all:
Prince & The Revolution's "Purple Rain".

It was released in 25 of June of 1984 and LESS than 5 months later (13 of November) it was certified at 8 x Platinum!

Then in January 16 of 1985 it reached the 9 x Platinum (at this point was still the best selling album in the USA).

But then Prince didn't wanted to tour anymore (including overseas) and he decided to release a 5th single which in my opinion was not the right one, "Take Me With U".

If the 5th has been "The Beautiful Ones" or even "Baby I'm A Star" and he had continued to play live then who knows how much more copies "Purple Rain" could have shipped. Prince instead wanted to release the "Around The World" album and so he denied Warner the chance of trying to release a 6th single from the album.

After all this only in 1989 "Purple Rain" reached finally the 10 million shipment mark (four years and a month after the 9P certification).

Mariah Carey - Mariah Carey halted at 9x Platinum also.

GRM:
Mariah Carey - Mariah Carey halted at 9x Platinum also.
Wrong comparation.

"Purple Rain" was at 9xP just seven months after release, just because of "current sales".

"Mariah Carey" only reached 9xP MORE than NINE years after its release! And it took more than 4 years to ship 8 million, while Prince did it in 5 months!

We were speaking of shipments whithin the first year of release, not of catalog sales.

"Purple Rain" really stopped at 9 million while "Mariah carey" slowly reached 9 million, it's two different things. 8-)

There's literally zero chance of Adele not getting to diamond.

I've no idea where the album will end up, but it's going to be past diamond.

^^^This. I genuinely don't 'get' how there are still some who cling to the belief that Diamond for '21' isn't going to happen. Maybe it's because they have always claimed it wouldn't and don't actually *like* the idea that it will  From the date of the 7x platinum cert. it's clear that the retailers are more than happy to hold big stocks of this album and why wouldn't they?

Is it insane to think it'll pass Thriller one day

I'm serious though, 10 years from now this album will be closing in on 20xP and it's because the songs are well written, well sung and truly, from her heart.

WHY do people continue to be so dramatic for Adele's sales?

20xp?

She's at 7xp.

Let's not get WAY ahead of ourselves.

We have no idea what the music business will be liked in 10 years. Albums might not even be dominant sellers.

I know ... But at least the 10xp is realistic. There just hasn't been anything with this much staying power in nearly a decade and most people were under the impression of "this album will debut at #1 and freefall like the rest".

Finally! "IM2" scanned 471K by December 2010!
Why not update "Live" and "Live Col. Ed" as well? Both are certainly well overdue!
