The Hobbit is an upcoming film series consisting of three epic fantasy-adventure films directed, co-written and produced by Peter Jackson and based on J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novel of the same name. The films are, by subtitle, An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and There and Back Again (2014).

Really interesting how they're approaching this. But I agree, it could end up as a mess.

Martin Freeman has landed the role of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, producer Peter Jackson has announced. The Lord Of The Rings director, who is overseeing the film based on the book that takes place before the trilogy, praised The Office actor's versatility.

"Martin is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave, exactly like Bilbo," he explaoned. "I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit."

British actor Ian Holm played the older Bilbo Baggins in Jackson's Lord Of The Rings movies.

Meanwhile Richard Armitage from the TV series MI-5, will play Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the Company Of Dwarves who accompanies Baggins on his quest.

The role is Freeman's biggest movie part to date, having previously appeared in British comedies Hot Fuzz and Nativity.

He recently played Dr Watson in the BBC's Sherlock.

Not really surprised Martin Freeman has got the big role as there were rumours about this for a while

They've also cast some of the other dwarves, still quite stunned who one of them is!!

AIDAN TURNER – KILI
ROB KAZINSKY – FILI
GRAHAM MCTAVISH – DWALIN
JOHN CALLEN – OIN
STEPHEN HUNTER – BOMBUR
MARK HADLOW – DORI
PETER HAMBLETON – GLOIN

All of them are probably unknown to most people - but the first 2 are certainly known to us Brits, Aidan Turner is out of Being Human and Rob Kazinsky is none other than Sean Slater from Eastenders!!

Overlooking the small matter of Frodo Baggins not actually appearing in JRR Tolkien‘s original Hobbit story, Elijah Wood will be returning to our screens as the furry–footed friend in the director Peter Jackson‘s new two–part film adaptation.

Deadline is reporting that Wood has now signed on the dotted line after breaking word of the actor being in talks with The Hobbit team last week. So, how will Frodo fit into the story? Well, rumours abound that he could play the role of narrator, reading The Downfall Of The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit or There And Back Again, the two books written by Bilbo after his adventures, which were then passed on as part of the Red Book of Westmarch to Frodo and Sam. This is, of course, a rumour and yet to be verified by anyone in The Hobbit camp / studio Warner Bros.

The first instalment is due to start filming next month with Wood, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Cate Blanchett, Sylvester McCoy, James Nesbitt and a whole host of other names confirmed to appear. Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis are yet to hop on board, however, with David Tennant and Orlando Bloom also not committed at this stage.

Here is some news to gladden the heart: after months of speculation and rumour, Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen are set to reprise their roles as Gollum and Gandalf in Peter Jackson‘s epic two–part adaptation of The Hobbit.

Deadline reports that Serkis has locked down his deal to appear as Gollum, while The Hollywood Reporter states that McKellen has applied his own scrawl to a deal to return as our favourite bearded wizard. The news follows hot on the heels of Elijah Wood‘s confirmed return yesterday as Frodo Baggins.

There are also fresh rumours abounding that acting royalty Christopher Lee and Ian Holm are being sought out to reprise their roles from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy as Saruman and the older version of Bilbo respectively. Shooting is expected to begin in New Zealand next month.

I really hate the idea of these characters from LOTR's appearing in these films when they weren't in the book. I get what they're doing though trying to link the two series of films together for those not familiar with the Hobbit but jeez! Either way can't wait for this!
