Two songs remain, both absolutely epic, both undisputed monsters in my Daily Top 20. Which will it be: Jordin's bombastic, anthemic declaration of the "Battlefield" that is love or Rihanna's raunchy, controversial "S&M"?

:o  wow, I was totally off with my guesses! I knew longevity was a factor, but HIAM being "only" No. 4 is a big shock! I guess the fact that it was released much more recently than "Only Girl", "S&M", and "Battlefield" really worked against it?

any rate, you know I really love "Mine" (my No. 3 of 2010) and "Hold It Against Me" (my No. 7 of 2011). I definitely like "Only Girl" too...but...and I know you'll strongly disagree with this...I feel like "We Found Love" is a massive upgrade of "Only Girl". they're both dance/pop/club jams...but I always felt like there was something lacking in "Only Girl", and I still can't quite put my finger on it....but "We Found Love" is an example of Rihanna doing dance/pop flawlessly (granted, she pretty much already proved she could do that with DSTM, but I digress). so basically, while most people seem to feel (or at least felt when it first came out) that WFL is a poor-man's OG, I think it's the other way around!

Wow surprises! Bad ones though!

#5 and #4 are great and some great lead singles... #3 on the other hand, like Paul said, has something lacking in which I cannot put my finger, or leg for the matter, on it.. I would say nice top 2 but I hate both of those Rihanna songs.... I really hope my guess for #1 is right and Battlefield takes the crown!

The fact that "Hold It Against Me" was released several months after "Only Girl (In The World)" and "S&M" did put it at a slight disadvantage but I think the two Rihanna songs were generally more consistent than "Hold It Against Me".

And you were on point when you said I'd disagree with you. I do! "We Found Love" has a great beat and I still give it a spin every once in a while, but I think RiRi's voice sounds wispy on the track and the chorus gets annoying after a while.

#2.

Rihanna - S&M

Image

Peak: #1 (20 days)
Points: 3,074 points

Of all of Rihanna's singles, I must say that even I was a bit surprised that "S&M" ended up as her biggest hit here. It did benefit from several factors, though. It was a #1 hit even before it was released officially as a single, the music video was controversial and helped re-energize the song on my chart, and the remix with Britney (as well as the BMA performance) all played a role in keeping this song a regular appearance on my Daily Top 20. Still, it still stood no chance against my #1.

#1.

Jordin Sparks - Battlefield

Image

Peak: #1 (19 days)
Points: 3,406 points

For those of you who've followed my chart from its inception, this victor should come as no surprise. "Battlefield" was actually #3 on my very first Daily Top 20 chart and it is one of only two songs (the other being "...Baby One More Time") that peaked at #1 on my Daily Top 20 in 2009, 2010, and 2011. I'm sure it'll peak at #1 some day in this year as well. There is something about first loves that you should never take for granted. Every chart that "Battlefield" is included in (2009 year-end singles chart, decade-end singles chart), it's #1 and my Ultimate Chart proved to be no exception. The song is a bombastic anthem and the epic line, "Guess you better go and get your armor" resonates with me each and every time. It is undoubtedly my Ultimate #1 song.

What an amazing top 5 Akini!!

#1 is fantastic! :D

The ranking of the songs is good too! I would've preferred Only Girl (In The World) at #2 instead of S&M, but this is great nonetheless.

Looking back at this countdown, I can only conclude that you have an incredible taste in music. VERY similar to mine. But that shouldn't come as a surprise to you since I basically loved all the songs lol!

Mine - The only Taylor song/single I can listen to. It's good and should be one of Taylor's best singles seeing that you ranked it so high?

Hold It Against Me - One of my favourite Britney lead singles ever (probably on par with "...Baby One More Time"). Was my favourite single off "Femme Fatale" until "Criminal" was released. Extremely underrated among the fans. Much better than "I Wanna Go" and "Till The World Ends".

Only Girl (In The World) - One of the best RiRi singles from "Loud" with a decent music video. Ranks as my second favourite single from Loud after "California King Bed". It's in my top 15 Rihanna songs, so it's really a great song and a club banger. It was not my jam though as it gets annoying after repititive plays like many Rihanna songs ("S&M", "We Found Love", "What's My Name?" are examples of this).

S&M - Decent, but not as good as "Hold It Against Me" or "Only Girl (In The World)". I prefer the remix with Britney Spears to the original though the latter usually generates much more hate by the casual listeners. I feel that Britney's voice really adds something special to the song. I dislike the video for reasons I've already mentioned before.

And... I don't know your #1 song!

aw, I'm still a bit embarassed for being so very off on how your Top 5 would turn out!

any rate, your Top 2 are both good...not great ;) I actually feel the same way about "S&M" as I do about "Only Girl": there's just something lacking that keeps me from loving it and ranking it among Rihanna's best singles. that said, it's still fun and sexy and catchy, just not the best moment on Loud.

"Battlefield" is nice, but I do prefer Jordin's mid/uptempo's ("Walking On Snow", "Shy Boy", "One Step At A Time", "S.O.S.").

aaany rate, this was obviously a ton of fun to follow (as are all your charts/countdowns). big props for taking the time to put this together! can't wait for your next list. <3

"Mine" is actually Taylor's best single, in my opinion.

You like "California King Bed" more than "Only Girl (In The World)"? :o That's certainly an unpopular opinion.

I agree that Britney's voice adds to the sexiness of "S&M". I'll never fathom how the remix could garner so much hate.

It's not your fault you were so off. You weren't following my Daily Top 20 during its peak so you were never able to witness its domination.

Aww, I'm not at all surprised to hear your thoughts on "Battlefield" and "S&M". I know you must sometimes think I'm crazy for loving those two songs as much as I do but I'm glad you found the countdown an enjoyable one to follow.

And yes, I do deserve props for putting this together. It took forever!
