Teen Suicide rate in Russia

Top Russian psychiatrists on Friday called for urgent measures to battle the soaring teenage suicide rate, one of the world’s highest.

The number of 15 to 19-year-olds taking their own lives is almost three times higher than the world average at 19 to 20 per 100,000, the health ministry’s chief psychiatrist Zurab Kekelidze told a round table in Moscow.

Four thousand teenagers commit suicide every year, Russia’s presidential ombudsman for children, Pavel Astakhov, said Thursday.

Kekelidze said psychology must be taught in schools to help children resolve their problems by and also called on the Russian Orthodox Church to extend support to disturbed youths.

“We have developed a programme and very soon …start implementing it,” Kekelidze said, cited by the RIA Novosti news agency.

He also denounced controversial Internet forums that advise on the different ways of commiting suicide.

Boris Polozhy, one of the main doctors at Moscow’s Serbsky Centre psychiatric hospital said: “The situation is extremely bad in our country.”

This week, two teenage girls jumped together off the roof of an apartment building in the town of Lobnya in the Moscow region in the third such double suicide in Russia since October.

On Friday investigators said they were looking into the death of a 12-year-old boy, who hung himself on a horizontal bar at his home in Siberia’s Krasnoyarsk region.

Russia now has the world’s third highest rate of suicides among adolescents, according to UNICEF and the Russian health ministry.

Since the turbulent 1990s, the country saw an overall fall in the number of suicides, with statistics showing a decline from 42 suicides per 100,000 people to 23.5 suicides between 1995 and 2010.

This is very sad. Too many lives are lost to suicide.

Teen suicide is something that really gets to me, because no one at my age should feel as though there's no future for them, or that there's nothing worth sticking around for.

These are the girls.

Nastya (Anastasia) and Lisa (Elizaveta) were 14 years old, best friends. There's no clear reason yet. But one of the girl missed classes due to illness, the other just didn't attend them - they missed two weeks. Then they left a note saying they were tired of being critizised and jumped off the 15th floor of the building.

Is there some psychological problem due to emotional issues or post-traumatic issues?

Or, is there some other type of source such as drugs, food, or environmental (not social, but toxins)?

Why should I, why jump off a clip it's selfish, people have to go through much worse than them, and they've chucked their whole life down the drain and for what...attention?

They aren't worth my sympathy, sorry if I sound heartless.

I may sound heartless as well, but I 100% agree with you!

There's people in the world with cancer or a terminal illness, that fight every single day to stay alive! These kids have nothing to seriously complain about. I understand even bullying is wrong, and could harm people, but these kids need to be remembered, there's people in the world with much more bigger problems, and they just don't give up on life. Most of those bullies you will never see again 3-5 years! They're in their teens, they have DECADES to live!! It also gets better as time goes by.

To make matters worst these kids not only destroyed their lives, but the people around them, that loved & cared for them! How dare you do that to them. It reminds me in an episode of Buffy, during the last season. One of the girls committed suicide, and Buffy had nothing nice to say, but call her weak.

I know I sound evil, but these kids have nothing to complain about, and in the end they hurt their love ones more than anything.

You guys have no idea what was actually going on in those girls' lives or minds, so maybe take a step back before you say you have no sympathy for two fourteen year olds who were driven to committing suicide.

^ Totally.
You have to be in a real shitty place to want to kill yourself and you're only fourteen.
And, I know that most of us at that age are a plethora of feelings and ANGST, but to actually carry it out....wow.

There has to be a reason as to why so many of these kids are killing themselves. Kids.
