Single That Killed Someone's Career

Leona Lewis - Happy
It killed her career especially in US, and it also underperformed outside US compared to her debut era. Echo also underperformed. She should've picked I Got You or Outta My Head imo. Will she make it with her 3rd album?

Miley Cyrus - Can't Be Tamed
It was a top 10 hit and dropped fast, fans weren't ready with Britney wannabe-Miley, with more mature and sexy style. They prefered innocent-Miley. The album underperformed and her fame dropped quickly.

Whitney Houston - Whatchulookinat
This single became her biggest flop in years, followed by an underperformed album, Just Whitney. Although the final album, I Look To You did quite great and had Million Dollar Bill which was a hit outside US, but she failed to create a comeback like her heyday in 80s/90s and failed to have any significance hits in US.

Janet Jackson - Just A Little While
Although probably it was mainly because of The Superbowl incident, i think the single wasn't strong enough. It became one of her lowest charting hits. She never recovered after All For You era, although Feedback was a moderate mini comeback hit. I still expect a comeback from her though.

More example?

i agree with every points!
so sad about "Happy" as it's a terrific single, but it killed the album's potential!

Alanis Morissette - every single from SFIJ, except from "Thank U"

Kate Nash - Do Wah Doo, though it s a great song, i do not know what went wrong :-?

Jordin Sparks - Battlefield, i dont get it
What if we choose to exist in a reality of our own making, does that render us insane, and if so, isn't that better than a life of despair?

U2 - Get On Your Boots

I love it, but it did next to nothing anywhere - failed to even reach the UK top 10! They should have returned with Magnificent.

Well, it didn't exactly kill her career because she had a successful movie after that + very successful collab with Maroon 5

A long time after American Life, Madonna hit it big with 4 Minutes. However, that was an artificial representation of her popularity in the US, at least on the singles chart - this could be the same with Moves Like Jagger.

Christina's real popularity will be tested with her big comeback.

I agree, and the same goes for Whitney because she was able to bounce back with the I Look to You album in 2009.

^^04wayne exactly, the success of Maroon song has nothing to do with her. Film is more a Cher vehicle too.

I wish her the best but I think it's over, at least as a big recording superstar.

That song and video were so bad it hurts, who was the genius behind the decision to do that as her comeback, I wonder?

What about Emma's pointless cover of "Downtown"? or En Vogue's "The Riddle"?

You really think both songs killed their career  ?
Both didn't do well but in Mariah's case, Glitter would be the real killer and she could only return with The Emancipation of Mimi and Rihanna is not in serious decline, it's just that You Da One is a relatively flop for her, but I doubt that it'll seriously hurt her career...

Yes, it's a very good song, but the expectations were much bigger. Anyway, she should thank her for NA and LFR  One of my fave albums of all-time

Huge flop and I was really surprised. It's a great dance track, but so underrated. Sad, but true :-?
