Gold & Platinum's Wintry Mix
February 23, 2012

Drake, McCreery, LMFAO, Adele & More Among January Highlights

WASHINGTON – Drake’s new album Take Care quickly certified Platinum this winter, according to the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA’s) January Gold & Platinum certifications report. Drake doters purchased more than one million copies of the November release to earn Drizzy his second Platinum album award.

Two newly minted acts earned premiere G&P album icing in January. American Idol champ Scotty McCreery took home his first Platinum plaque for debut Clear As Day (Mercury Nashville, 2011), while Super Bowl stunners LMFAO earned a first Gold for Sorry For Party Rocking (Interscope, 2011).

Several fourth-quarter album releases received timely Gold certifications in January for selling more than 500,000 copies. The golden gaggle includes: Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli’s Concerto One Night (Decca Label Group), English indie band Florence + the Machine’s Ceremonials (Universal Republic), Ohio blues rock duo The Black Keys’ El Camino (Nonesuch) and Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy’s Thug Motivation 103: Hustlerz Ambition (Def Jam).

Recent six-time Grammy award winner Adele warmed up January’s G&P count, receiving the month’s highest album and download awards: 6x multi-Platinum certs for album 21 (Columbia/XL Recordings, 2011) and song “Rolling in the Deep.” Adele also secured her seventh Gold download honor for “Turning Tables.” To date Adele’s career digital certifications represent 14 million downloads sold in the United States.

A bright blue coiffure isn’t all that’s new to Katy Perry in 2012: the Capitol singer also earned January’s second highest download award with a 5x multi-Platinum cert for galactic song “E.T.”

Taylor Swift’s January was one full of precious metals. The RIAA awarded Taylor her 21st Gold download cert for new single “Ours,” a 4x multi-Platinum for popular ballad “You Belong With Me,” plus a 4x multi-Platinum album award for her latest record Speak Now (Big Machine Records, 2010) selling more than four million copies.

Inaugural multi-Platinum digital download awards went to Atlantic R&B artist Trey Songz and Fueled By Ramen pop group Cobra Starship for their respective songs “Bottoms Up” (3x multi-Platinum) and “You Make Me Feel” (2x multi-Platinum).

The RIAA presented first ever Platinum download plaques to pop rock pianist and singer Gavin DeGraw for “Not Over You” (RCA Records), North Carolina hip hopper J. Cole for “Work Out” (Columbia), Oklahoma’s own Toby Keith for “Red Solo Cup” (Show Dog – Universal Music) and country singer-songwriter Jerrod Niemann for “Lover, Lover” (Sea Gayle Records).

Meanwhile Luke Bryan, Coldplay and Blake Shelton each earned their second career Platinum download awards for their respective songs “Do I,” “Paradise” and “God Gave Me You.”

In January the RIAA awarded a total of 21 album and 35 digital single certifications. All certifications are calculated by Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman. Complete lists of all album, single, mastertone and video awards can also be accessed at www.riaa.com.

I have a feeling XL/Columbia may combine the 8x/9x certification application for '21' to save money! It is clearly 8x platinum already, shipment-wise.

Labels have not been skipping certifications, but there has not been such a high selling album in the past 8 years.

I'm sure they will pay for 8xp.

I hope this one gets updated soon.

It been almost 17 years since the last cert.
It scanned 3.872M since soundscan began in 1991, maybe 3M since last cert!

I just Tweeted Mary J Blige, Brantley Gilbert, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nickelback.

I said "Be sure to remind your label to certify, name of album, with the #RIAA. It's eligible for a Gold certification"

Let's see if it works.

Janet is criminally under-certified. She should be close to 40 million instead of just 26

Celine Dion must be the only female artist whose soundscan sales are higher than the RIAA certifications.

Yes. Janet is more under certified on a volume basis [i.e. between 13-14m] but Celine is still undercertified by a massive 10-11m sales.

04wayne, this may not be the appropriate thread for this, but I'm curious to know which Janet/Celine albums are undercertified. Would you care to do a quick run-down? :)

janet. is still certified 6x though soundscan sales are 7x, plus factor in record club sales and its easily 8 million.

Rhythm Nation and Control are both at least 1-2 million below true sales.

Thank U so Much 4 the info

AC/DC could be a little bit higher (but they don´t have a greatest hits such as aeromith´s greatest hits from their 70´s hits)

Also is Guns N´ Roses Undercertified what about Illusion (are they eligible for 8 x platinum)

I´m surprise to see no Bon Jovi in that list!!! is he close to Chicago´s certifications??
