In what way?
Probably because Perry is Gaga's nearest competitor and she's outselling her with a much older album.

"Thriller" was the best selling album of 1984. In its first year "Thriller" sold under 10 million copies in the US (btw Michael Jackson wrote in Moonwalk that by the fall of 1983 "Thriller" had sold 8 million copies) and then on December 2, 1983 "Thriller" video was released and that was a beginning of the biggest dominance of an one album ever. In the next few months "Thriller" sold 7.5 million copies in the US, including over 1 million copies in the week following American Music Awards broadcast and over 1 million copies in the week following Grammy broadcast... At the end of the year, actually on October 30, 1984 "Thriller" was certified 20x Platinum by RIAA even though actual shipment was even greater (club sales will be included in the '90s)... Two weeks later, on November 13, 1984 Prince's "Purple Rain" was certified 8x Platinum by RIAA and then on January 16, 1985 9x Platinum.

will the sales from Katy's re-release be added onto TD or will it be counted as separate?

Thanks Hal, i wasn't aware about all the figures so accurately.

Btw Thriller, in The US, already shipped 8 million by September 1983 according to Billboard and 19,4 million in the first 15 months (Dec 1982 - March 5 - 1984)

Seems like Billboard won't count it as a re-release...

My understanding was that the re-release would count as the same album under SS, but that any singles from the re-release wouldn't count as a single from TD. Does that make sense? It would be totally unfair not to count it as the same album as they've counted every other re-release, including ones with completely new EPs attached to them (The Fame Monster, Viva La Vida + Prospect's March) as the same album.

Adele's domination of the rest is just unbelievable. How many more weeks until she's outsold the album at #2 (released 10 months before '21') by 2:1?

I'm so happy to see Adele's 21 at number 1 by such a huge margin! It's very likely it will end up being album of the decade, but obviously it's too early to call something like that. You never know when the next phenomenon might be around the corner...

Also ecstatic to see Taylor's Speak Now at number 3. Such an incredible album, start to finish. I hope it eventually passes Em's Recovery, and I also hope it can finish in the decade top 10. Knowing what an amazing catalog seller Taylor is, I think the album has a decent shot.

There are still 8 years left in this decade.

Let's not crown Adele the winner of the decade yet...

It´s good for them, but it´s bad sign for the music industry that the Top 2 sellers of the year so far are: 1) the very same album that topped last year´s chart; 2) a catalog album:

LOL, that's exactly what my post said if you read again. I said it was "very likely... but obviously it's too early to call something like that. You never know when the next phenomenon might be around the corner." So I did not crown her winner of the decade, just saying that she has a good shot, especially considering she has the whole decade to rack up catalog sales.

I think that RITD has a very good chance of passing 8m by the end of the year. It's still selling really strongly, so will probably be at 6.75m by the end of this week. With 43 weeks in the year left after this one, RITD would only need to sell an average of 29,000/week for the rest of the year. It looks like it has many more weeks ahead of it in which it will comfortably sell above that.

IGF will probably also pass 8m this year, but it's hard to say which song will come out on top by the end of the year. I think at the latest, though, RITD will pass IGF sometime next year.

RITD has about 3 months before it hits 8 million downloads and IGAF has about 20 weeks before it hits the mark

RITD has to sell an average of 101,538 copies a week to reach 8 million by june 19 months after release which would be an average of 421.052 copies a month
