I'm about to head off to Future Music Festival, so I won't be able to post the chart tonight, alas here is a preview and link...

ARIA Top 50 Singles Chart

• Despite expectations, Fun. scored enough midweek sales to beat Gym Class Heroes to the top spot this week.

• Nicki Minaj hits a new peak with her new smash 'Starships', it should hit #3 next week to equal 'Turn Me On' as her highest peaking single. Can it become her highest charting single ever?

• We're seeing a few effects of the Future Music Festival with Skrillex, Knife Party and Gym Class Heroes all doing well on the chart

• Taio Cruz's promo tour pays off, as 'Troublemaker' skyrockets to #11, becoming his sixth top 20 hit in Australia

• Matt Corby sees a resurgence in digital sales thanks to increasing radio support for 'Brother'

• I told you to keep an eye on it last week, now Outasight is set to debut next week, expect 'Tonight Is The Night' to enter at #40

• She's taking off all around the world and Australia is no exception, Carly Rae Jepsen will fly into the top 20 next week

• That's it this week ;)

Adele spends a 31st week at the top with 21, beating the run of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Remote Cintrol, her Australian record company has also updated the certs of her albums. Her debut is now double platinum and 21 has hit 12 x Platinum status. One Direction are heading in the right direction. They're up 4 to a new peak at #2. Skrillex moves up 1 to #4, which is also a new peak for the Bangarang EP. Brisbane band Last Dinosaurs enter at #8 with their debut. Aussie country singer Troy Cassar Daley scores his first Top 10 LP at #9 with Home.

Bon Iver's self-titled album gets a boost, moving up 19 to #17 on the back of his tour and a reduction in price on iTunes. Bob Seger's Greatest Hits enters one spot below. Current tourist Taylor Swift sees her third album bullet to #19 and her live album reach a new peak at #20.

Jessie J re-enters at #36 thanks to her performances at the Future Music festival. Passenger suffers a massive fall, down 33 spots to #42. Ouch! The Wombats's second LP is back in the mix at #43. Metalcore band Every Time I Die comes in at #46. Foo Fighters' Greatest Hits re-emerges at #47, so do the Jezabels after winning the Australian Music Prize. Taylor Swift's second LP moves up to #49 and Steel Panther finally chart in the Top 50, climbing to #50.

Next week: Things are finally starting to heat up a bit on the release schedule. Hilltop Hoods will enter at #1, no doubt about it. Bruce Springsteen will get either the #2 or #3 spot depending on the effect of the broadcast of Adele's 60 Minutes interview. Fun. will chart in the #20-#25 area. Grimes may land around #40.

Not to forget that "SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES" also reaches a new peak climbing 28-27.

I wonder when was the last time an artist had 2 albums reaching new peaks in one week...

Adele in May last year, when '21' reached #1 and '19' reached #30 in the same week - both new peaks at the time.

Hi guys, haven't wrote in here for a few months so thought i'd catch up (hope you're all well), here's a few comments

- Great that Fun are #1, a real grower but its climbed very quickly. I'd imagine it'll be #1 for a while (maybe anywhere between 4-8 weeks? depending on competition)

- Also great for Nicki, once the video drops I expect it may begin catching up to Fun but I suspect it'll be another long running #2 (unless it gets a bigger boost)

- One to watch is definately Carly Rae Jepsen. Its climbing incredibly quick on itunes (almost top 10 at #12). Like Nicki, I'd imagine it could challenge for #1 in 2/3 weeks (its already #1 on NZ itunes) but again, it wouldn't surprise me if it gets stuck behind.

- Skrillex is doing very well which is surprising. Glad Boys Like You by 360 has become such a big hit also. Looks like Train will be joining the top 10 in the next week or so

Welcome back Simon! I agree about Fun., they should have a a few weeks on top, you can tell by the fact that they got to #1 on iTunes when they were only around #20 on airplay and their airplay had flown upwards since then.

Speaking of airplay, I find most impressive that Skrillex has made it all the way to #4 on iTunes today (new peak), despite not even being in the top 40 on airplay. I'd attribute this to internet media, MTV/Channel [V] support and the Future tour.

Does anyone else feel like Chris Brown should be in the top 5 right now? Even though there is nothing wrong with his chart run in general, I find it weird that a song that hot and current and accompanied by a great video (that is in high rotation), isn't higher than #10 atm. But I guess he could just linger in the #8-20 range for a long time.

NEW ITUNES PEAKS

#4 - Skrillex // Bangarang
#11 - Carly Rae Jepsen // Call Me Maybe
#19 - Labrinth // Earthquake ft Tinie Tempah
#25 - Lil Wayne // Mirror ft Bruno Mars
#68 - DJ Fresh // Hot Right Now

Skrillex actually has 5 songs in the top 100! ...more than Rihanna!

Maybe it's got to do with his persona/behaviour? Got no idea. :-? Is it being supported on radio though?

Personally, I find Chris Brown's track rather ordinary. I don't mind it but I can easily suggest 10 better songs in the top 20 so it's no surprise to me that it isn't top 5. I much prefer Jason DeRulo's song and I haven't been much of a fan of him in the past.

What I am surprised at is how The Wanted's "Glad You Came" wasn't a bigger hit especially as it's kicking butt in the UK & US plus its the type of music Aussies usually like.

I also can't see the hype about Nicki Minaj's song. Some parts are catchy but some are just bland and annoying. Not massive hit worthy in my opinion.

I am liking "Call Me Maybe". This should make the top 5 with no problems. Fingers crossed it does better than Nicki Minaj's song.

I am quite surprised about Chris Brown but then there is quite alot of competition at the moment. I can see Katy Perry reclimbing into the top 10 once the video.

I absolutely love Call Me Maybe, still think that will be one to watch in 2/3 weeks though it wouldn't surprise me if it gets stuck behind Fun. It has a big lead on NZ itunes at the mo. Nicki Minaj actually has a big lead from #3 on itunes but I still reckon it'll get stuck at #2 at this stage.

K'Naan and Nelly Furtado duet is now #1 in New Zealand so I can see that being big in a couple of months. The new Calvin Harris/Ne'Yo song also screams Aussie hit IMO as well.

I'm also a bit surprised about Chris Brown, especially since Turn Up The Music is heavily discounted on iTunes at the moment.

EDIT: Have just listened to that Calvin Harris / Ne Yo tune and it almost sounds the same as We Found Love  . I hope it won't outpeak Feel So Close even though it's highly likely to happen.

I think the Calvin/Ne-Yo track could outpeak 'Bounce' and 'Feel So Close', should be any easy top 20 for him none-the-less.

I don't see 'Call Me Maybe' reaching #1 unlike you guys, that song screams #5-12 peak to me.

Not sure about the whole K'naan/Nelly situation, New Zealand is literally the only market where that song has proven to be a major hit, it's moving up in her homeland of Canada though. I mentioned in the thread for it, could it be like Keri Hilson's 'Energy' chart-wise? Alas, it *could* be a hit here, I just feel like something would have happened by now.

Nicki is edging closer to Fun. at #1, 25% off them atm.

Labrinth's 'Earthquake' has become such a sleeper hit, I swear it feels like a lifetime that I've watched it climb from around #125 on iTunes to now being #14, catch up Australia!!

Usher's 'Climax' is still sitting outside the top 20, despite now having a video. I'm still gonna stand by my original prediction that it won't be a hit here because it is too R&B.

New Cody Simpson track is moving quickly, at #50 today.

LMFAO should either re-service 'Sorry For Party Rocking' to radio this week coming, or send 'Best Night' to radio in 2-3 weeks and pretend 'Sorry...' never happened.

New Delta single is set to premiere soon, anyone care to predict how that will go? This will be her first time competing in the now wholly digital market. Her last singles (in 2007) were still during the physical era and helped her achieve good peaks, but she dropped off the chart quickly towards the end...

#1 - In This Life (18 weeks)
#2 - Believe Again (12 weeks)
#14 - You Will Only Break My Heart (7 weeks)
#13 - I Can't Break It To My Heart (3 weeks)

I think we can all agree that no one in the general public probably remembers those last two singles with incredibly similar titles

Call Me Maybe will be a song similar to Miley Cyrus's See You Again. I think it will go top 5 but I don't see it go #1 either. I just hope it does better than Nicki Minaj.

As for Delta, I don't see her doing all that well. I guess how she promotes it is how well it will debut. I don't think Aussies really care for her like they once did plus when she charted in the 2003/4 era was where a lot of bias was made on the weekly charts.

If songs weren't deleted back then I question how many songs of hers would have actually gone to #1. I imagine Crazy In Love and Ignition would have had monsterous chart runs at the top.

Yes, especially considering that "Yeah 3x" was a huge hit last year (it's certified with like 4/5x Platinum) and stayed in the top 5 for a pretty long time, and this one is even a better song IMO and has a better video.

'Yeah 3X' is the better song IMO, but 'Turn Up The Music' has the better video.

I don't care what anyone says, Delta deserved all five of those number ones, all five of those singles were amazing  For me, it's ironic that the biggest of the bunch ('Born To Try') is my least favourite. I really hope she can score hits again, but I feel like the public has turned against her for no particular reason (which I've discussed many times on UKMix).

All of her songs would have been #1. Actually, Innocent Eyes reached the top spot BEFORE Crazy In Love & Ignition were released. By the time Not Me Not I were released, Ignition & Crazy In Love had already lost a lot of steam.

Crazy In Love couldn't have reached the top spot anyway cos it was blocked by Ignition.

Well, and it's not as if her #1 singles were just flashes in the pan. They all went at least platinum and ended in the Top 20 Year End chartin 2003.

Thanks for the replies, I love starting a good old debate:

Firstly, I can see Let's go by Calvin Harris going top 5 at least to be honest, just screams big hit for some reason. I am still surprised Ne-Yo has never had a #1 single in Australia :o

As for Carly, you guys are probably right (may be I am being a bit too optimatic?) but it does scream big hit to me. I mean its got to #11 on itunes with little airplay and just the Justin Bieber hype. I think its got steam in it yet though won't peak for another 3-4 weeks.

You raise a good point regarding K'Naan/Nelly but equally there have been many times songs take a while to cross over. Even Ass Back Home peaked in NZ last year and only got big in Oz in February this year.

I used to love Delta in the Innocent Eye era. I personally can't see why she can't be a success this era as long as the first single is good. She will have the Voice backing as well which will help though not sure she will go to #1 (think her album might though).

All this talk has made me forget the 2003-2006 time period in relation to deletions. SO many songs would have had great/longer chart runs if they weren't deleted. It still annoys me to this day, especially as the 2004 wasn't accurate to the popular songs of the year. I Don't want you back, Toxic, Yeah etc should have had much longer chart runs.

First of all, great to see you back in the Aussie chart thread :D !

Re: Carly. I think it'll depend whether radios pick her track or not. Don't think it screams #1 but Top 3 is a dead cert. She's almost Top 10 on iTunes as well, won't be surprised if she's Top 5 tomorrow.

True about the deletions. I think that I Don't Want You Back could've spent easily 8-10 weeks at the top hadn't it been deleted. The song was selling around 22k copies at #1, often outselling the #2 by 2 to 1. Perhaps it could've even been at the top of the 2004 Year End Chart. Oh well, you can't re-write history!

May you please explain what kind of this "delete" thing you guys are talking about?
Deletions often happened in the physical era. After several weeks, some record companies stopped manufacturing very successful singles, to force people to buy the album instead. As the single was no longer available to stores, it tumbled the chart.

One of the biggest examples is F**k It (I Don't Want You Back). It went: 2-1-1-1-1-4-10-25.

The song was deleted at #1 and only spent 3 other weeks in the Top 50. However, that didn't help the album to sell well. Here are a few examples of songs that were deleted when they were still Top 10:

+ My Heart Will Go On
+ Doctor Jones
+ Barbie Girl
+ F**k It
+ Beautiful Soul
+ 4 Ever
+ Behind These Hazel Eyes
+ Toxic
+ Everytime
+ Yeah

Thanks  While I would say its good to be back, I've technically never left. I always make sure I read the thread on a Monday. :P

Re:Carly - I think I just got carried away as it has climbed so quickly. At the moment I reckon it'll get stuck behind Nicki and Fun but the charts can be unpredictable so never say never. Fun is gonna be #1 for a while unless something shoots from nowhere. Nicki is only filming her video now, think she will miss the boat now and get stuck at #2 for weeks now.

Re Deletions - It was incredibly annoying, don't forget 'Complicated' :P either. I was always rather impressed IDWYB managed #5 on the year end chart in 2004, I agree it would have sold much much more. Though in a way I love Left Outside Alone & Black Betty who may not have reached #1 as a result :p Luckily it shouldn't happen in the download era!

Actually this can still happen today, can't it?
When a label asks ITunes and co. to put off the digital singles and make albums only being possible to be bought as a whole (instead of choosing seperate tracks) to force people to buy albums...

True but labels have never done it in Australia and probably never will.

Than why did they do it in the physical-era and not now?
There's not such a difference just that you have to make albums album-only-records, too...
