BIllboard new rules?

They will count streaming/??? Mariah isn´t strong on internet popularity or? I think that will give only more power to artists like Rihanna, Katy etc?

^ Seriously. Billboard is counting how many views or streams you get on Youtube or Rhapsody or what have you.

:-?

I think we really are witnessing the end of the Rock 'N Roll era...

stevyy wrote:sony completely mishandled the Butterfly album. But Mariah is partly to blame too. she should have brought the Butterfly tour to Europe too. I mean Music Box sold almost 8 million copies in Europe, Daydream did more than 3,5 million and then Butterfly only sold like 1,2 million..
Would it have made any real difference?

Europe did not receive the Butterfly "singles" well.

And besides your point about Mariah's touring is after the fact.

The fact still remains that there was an unreasonably massive gap between Honey and My All...where the world saw nothing come out from Mariah Carey.

Butterfly could've been a big worldwide hit that could've sold the album but management (i.e. Tommy Mottola) prevented it from taking off. I mean, it had it's own remixes, a potential B-side and everything...

Why was it caged? Probably because of the lyrical content and who it was referring to.

And the label didn't even bother to release Whenever You Call. Which is a yet another power ballad that could've spread some serious, pop/AC appeal.

She is actually very popular on the internet.
Touch my body video was a smash on yahoo launch and youtube.

Mariah's good videos are hits. Young people still love her. That's something that makes mariah special. 42 but still youthful.

but i find that album was not well worked. it´s an amazing album, should had sold few millions more.

Singles for Butterfly should've went like this:

1. Honey
2. My All
3. Breakdown
4. Butterfly
5. Whenever You Call and The Roof

It could've sold at least 15 million!

Close my eyes is a beautiful album track but one of the songs that is furthest away from single material on the whole album.

Too personal and quite and sublime :)

Love the song though

Close My Eyes is not radio-friendly.

It's a beautiful song and it would've made a beautiful video...but Close My Eyes is one of those album gems that should be a treat for the people who buy the album.

I mean...it could've been a single. And it could've been a successful one.

But it's a longshot. Realistically, the most Close My Eyes could've/should've been is some sort of a airplay-only promotion tool...

That way if the public absolutely fell head-over-heels in love with it, then the label could give it a commercial release and watch it become a Top 20 or Top 10 hit. Maybe even Top 5...

And if the public didn't devour it, then no harm, no foul. On to the next one...

I understand why Sony didn't adequately promote "Butterfly". A bit unprofessional on the one hand, understandable on the other. Mariah's risk at shifting sound and image was admirable, no matter if I personally think she shot herself in the foot, but it wasn't the best decision from a commercial perspective. So in that sense I get why Sony didn't promote "Butterfly" as much as they did Mariah's previous records. They pumped more promo into WAY more profitable records like Celine's "Let's Talk ABout Love", instead of Mariah's uncommercial yet daring project. I'd do the same tbh.

Love the pic with the Roc and Roe! Too adorable for words. :D

I get what you're saying but in hindsight I bet they regret it alot, around that time happened the big 'urban' explosion what with Bad Boy, Mary, Brandy Aaliyah etc doing so well They kind of missed the boat. They could have shifted soo much more of that album if they'd have took more of a risk.
