Singles that would've been #1 if released first

I was thinking if a singer had released one of their singles that were released 3rd, 4th, 5th, that it would've perhaps gone to #1 if released first. Because singles tend to do worse with each release (Katy Perry being an obvious exception!) Not just in the US, but the UK. For example. Katy Perry released "Firework" 3rd and in the UK, it peaked at #3, even though it became her best selling song there. What other songs do you think would've gone to #1 in UK or US or anywhere else if released first?

I think -
Lady GaGa - Marry the Night
Katy Perry - Hot N Cold
Gwen Stefani - The Sweet Escape
Rihanna - Rude Boy (UK)

etc
What's the lord think of me, for being so f***ing weak?

In the US:

Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation
Janet Jackson - If
Janet Jackson - I Get Lonely (possibly)
Janet Jackson - Someone To Call My Lover

Mariah Carey - H.A.T.E. U (you never know!)
Janet Jackson the only artist in history to be nominated for a Grammy in Pop, Rock, Dance, R&B, Rap, Album of the Year & Best Video.

I don't agree with Marry The Night at all sorry.
But, some that I do think are:
Beyonce - Sweet Dreams (especially in the UK)
Lady Gaga - Edge Of Glory

I also agree with the Sweet Escape.

Lady Gaga - The Edge Of Glory or Marry The Night

Beyonce - Sweet Dreams or Halo, End Of Time or Party or Countdown (RTW really ruined all the potential for this era tbh)

Beyoncé - Countdown
Lady Gaga - The Edge Of Glory, but any song that would've served as the first single would've gone #1
Britney Spears - Till The World Ends

True. If 'Born This Way' could go to #1, then anything would have.

I always thought that it's possible for late singles to save an era.
But according to your theory, the later a single is released the harder it can climb high.
So is the infamous case possible that a 4th or 5th single can get an album back in the top 10?

Obsessed reached #11, and that sucks compared to H.A.T.E. U! :P

Lady Gaga - Judas/The Edge Of Glory/You & I/Marry The Night, basically any lead singles from BTW could've hit #1, cos it was so anticipated with huge promo as well
Britney Spears - Till The World Ends/I Wanna Go, after Womanizer, we learned that any lead single from Britney is a sure #1 debut.
Britney Spears - Circus/If U Seek Amy, her comeback was so anticipated, any lead single could've hit #1
Mariah Carey - Bye Bye/I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time/I Stay In Love, basically any lead singles from E=MC2 could've hit #1, cos it was so anticipated with huge promo as well as well repressed itunes release
Nicki Minaj - Superbass, sad that it's only a bonus track
Katy Perry - The One That Got Away, well, if it was released as a 4th or 5th, it could've hit #1, but a 6th single was more difficult
Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music, maybe if it's released right after Umbrella
Rihanna - Talk That Talk, it could've been as big as WFL
Beyonce - Halo, sad they picked the weaker If I Were A Boy
Mariah...Xtina...Britney...

Beyonce - Love on Top
Kanye West featuring multiple guests - All of the Lights
Rihanna - Don't Stop the Music
Eminem featuring Rihanna - Love the Way You Lie

Eventhough LtWYL was the best selling single of 2010 in the UK, it was up against heavy competition during its release.

Mariah Carey - H.A.T.E.U. couple with the remix it might have been a huge hit.

Mariah Carey - I'll Be Loving U Long Time remix with Touch My Body would have been massive.

Mariah Carey - Get Your Number/Shake It Off.

Lady Gaga - The Edge Of Glory
Mariah Carey - Fly Like A Bird (I do think that if it was released instead of "Shake It Off", it could have possibly hit #1 - such a great gem!)
Beyoncé - Halo
Beyoncé - Love On Top (if it was the lead single with the Billboard Music Awards performance...)
Christina Aguilera - Beautiful
Mariah Carey - Bye Bye (if it was the lead single, it would have possibly been #1 and would have still kept the momentum for the album)
"To love another person is to see the face of God." - Les Misérables

* Beyonce - Halo. "Halo" >>>>>>>> "If I Were A Boy"
* Chris Brown - With You. "Kiss Kiss" ruined the album IMO, "With You" did great as the 3rd single peaking at #2 in the US & Canada, top 10 in the UK, Ireland & Australia - but if it's released as the first/second single, I'm sure it would've been bigger.
* Beyonce - Irreplaceable. Imagine if this was the first single, the album would sell like a hot cake.
* Beyonce - End of Time.
* Rihanna - Unfaithful. Still can't believe it peaked at #6 in the USA.
* Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air. The perfect song to launch her career.

LMAO no way! "We Found Love" was/is still huge, it's been staying for like 23 weeks inside the US top 10. If "Talk That Talk" was released as the first single, I doubt it would be even as big as "What's My Name?".

Totally agree about Kiss Kiss, the next 2 singles, With You and Forever were #2 hits but more memorable than the #1 hit Kiss Kiss. With You or Forever could've been a #1 hit instead of Kiss Kiss
About Unfaithful, well, after SOS hit #1, it's a bit weird how Unfaithful wasn't more successful, maybe people weren't ready yet with a slow jam from Rihanna.
No Air was destined to be a big #1 hit. It should've been a lead single instead of Tattoo.

There's some opinions in here that I whole-heartedly disagree with, but I'll restrain myself

Anyways...

Regarding Chris & the 'Exclusive' era, he could have had a #1 if 'Kiss Kiss', 'With You' or 'Forever' had been the lead single... who knows why the rather forgettable 'Wall To Wall' was released first?!

In Australia, 'Untouched' could have easily gone to #1 had The Veronicas released it before 'Hook Me Up' (which most people probably don't remember, let alone know went to #1).

The One That Got Away >>> one of the best pop songs EVER.
What if we choose to exist in a reality of our own making, does that render us insane, and if so, isn't that better than a life of despair?
