Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and Eagles' "Their Greatest Hits" were certified double diamond long ago (for sales of 2,000,000 copies): the former reached that status during 1984 (when still selling) and the latter during 1987. It is very easy to notice (for anyone who looks at things with an even eye) that those two albums have sold between 2,500,000 and 3,000,000 copies overall in Canada. Same for "Rumours" and other albums. So a little bit more than 800,000 sales to go.

I think it is still too early to predict whether Adele will get there or not, but she may do so. She has to sell more than twice as many albums as she has sold so far.

The list you are quoting (although I could be wrong) is probably a Soundscan one, thus going further back to 1996 only, and without club sales, which obviously plays against the oldest albums ("Come On Over", for instance, will have sold plenty of copies through that avenue).

Euromillions wrote:The figure I saw for Come On Over was 1.95 million I believe? Of course it's a big gap but look at what '21' is currently selling per week in Canada with no sign of a let up. It 'only' takes 40 weeks at 20k or thereabouts to make up that gap (although i admit I have no idea how many copies COO is currently selling per week). We have traditionally bigger selling periods still to come of course. And if she did get the Olympics gig...

It's most definitely not an impossible task.
I have to say I admire your optimism.

According to you "21" will shortly be the bestselling album ever in the UK and Canada.

Any more countries you'd like to add to that list? :P
I've been laughed at before in this thread. Quite a lot.
not laughing mate but I think "21" is more likely to break chart records than sales ones. Personally I would prefer 38 wks at No 1 in the US to the bestselling album ever in Canada. 8-)
Yeah, but what's wrong with the album achieving both? I wasn't aware it was an either/or situation.

PS I shouldn't have said laughed at - more disbelieved. :P

It has reached 15x Platinum if I remember right.
But what is the best-selling album ever there?
interweb says it's David Gray's "White Ladder" although I can't find reliable sales.
It is David Gray, but noone knows the figure (or Adele's exact current figure for that matter). I spent an unreasonable amount of time trying to search for White Ladder's Ireland sales once

Don't they have an official chart body over there, rundmck?

Yep, well, there's IRMA and chart-track that collects sales from them, but total sales are very seldom released. All we know is that:

-White Ladder is the biggest selling album of all time
-21 sold 250k last year and should be close to 300k soon
-21 has the fastest 1 year sales of all time

One Direction could be on the way to making history on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week.

Industry sources suggest the vocal quintet's "Up All Night" may sell between 160,000 and 180,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on March 18.

That sum could be enough to snag a No. 1 bow -- and it would mark the first U.K. group in history to debut at No. 1 with its first album.

Adele's "21" set may also sell around 150,000 to 160,000 -- so that album could block One Direction from No. 1 and make a return to the top (for a 24th week!).

Please, Adele, outsell them!Image

Also, on the Ireland sales. If 250k 1 year sales are scaled up to reflect the UK's population, it becomes just under 3.5 million, which is remarkably similar to 21's 1 year sales in the UK.

A Woman's Heart is far and away the biggest selling album in Ireland - it is reported to have sold 750,000 although this seems a crazy amount :o :o :o

That´s because they didn´t smash simultaneously in all markets. That is bad for the peaks, but good for the longevity.

You should read the article from Billboard a little bit more... It's based JUST in the USA. Although the estimations aren't correct too. Rihanna has had MORE tours in the USA than just 11 as Billboard wrote. Wait for Forbes...

Rihanna earned 29m$ from 2010-2011. She will easily earn more this time.

We will see about Adele.
Which doesn´t change the fact she still made a lot less money then Adele last year, despite selling her butt to endorsements and touring her ass off. Of course I know the article is based on the USA only... on a global scale, Adele´s advantage over Rihanna should be even bigger, since 21 became a blockbuster in most countries where Rihanna only has moderately sucessful albums.

Hmm, I believe 'A Woman's Heart' is the best selling IRISH album of all time in Ireland. And it sold 750k WORLDWIDE, not in Ireland!

Nope.

Also, Talk on Corners is the 2nd biggest selling album in Ireland, having been certified 20x platinum (300,000 sales)

I'm not, just stating ToC is 2nd biggest selling album, and what it's cert is.

Back on topic, Adele's 21 was last reported as 12x platinum in October, it is now eligible for at least 19x platinum, and I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the year it is well inside top 5 albums of all time in Ireland. I just hope IRMA make an announcement at some stage.

Have IRMA released a list of the best selling albums in Ireland or where did you get your figures?

Do you all remember when Gaga's people said Born This Way album would sell 30 Million copies WW. I remember laughing so hard not only cause I thought it could never happen for BTW but because I thought it was really impossible in this new era of music sales. But now Adele could end over 30 mill in the end :o
