9-year-old girl gives birth to a baby boy

In northeast China last Sunday, a 9-year-old girl gave birth to a healthy 6-pound baby boy. The identity of the father has not yet been released, although the police have reportedly been contacted.

According to news.com.au in Australia, the baby was delivered by cesarean section at a Changchun hospital, and both the mom and newborn are doing well.

Sadly, she is not the youngest girl to deliver a baby, according to other published reports. Two girls in Peru, ages 5 and 8, are both on record as giving birth to children of their own. (See a list at Wikipedia of the youngest birth mothers here.)

How young is too young to be a mom? What do you think this newborn's life will be like given this kind of beginning?

It is a very interesting subject.

The age of consent in Delaware, U.S. was 7 up until as recently as 1895. And it was 10-12 in the rest. It was risen to 16-18 only within the last 100 years.

You know...there is a good chance that the father is in the same age group as the mother...or maybe just a little bit older...

Because of age of consent laws, she could be charged with statutory rape.

I don't know the what Peru has established when it comes to underaged sex...

...but in many places, it's actually against the law for minors to have sex with other minors. Just like it is against the law for minors to have sex with adults and vice versa...

The age of consent and where it lies is a very intriguing debate...

It's called Precocious Puberty, the appearance of physical and hormonal signs of pubertal development at an earlier age. It's mainly because of abnormality of puberty hormones. That's why, a 5 yo girl can get pregnant if she has Precocious Puberty

Very disturbing to hear. It would seem many more girls are hitting puberty at a much younger age. Scientists believe the phenomenon could be linked to obesity or exposure to chemicals and hormones in the food chain. Reseachers say hitting puberty early can mean longer exposure to oestrogen, a factor in breast cancer. There is also greater risk of heart disease. Girls are ill-equipped to cope with sexual development when they are still just a child.

I had already heard about the PERU girls on some tv show a while back. This is sad and disgusting though as the girl has obviously been raped or groomed by an adult male.
