Billboard 200/Catalog Albums Chart Update - March 24, 2012
Houston Sales Continue: Whitney Houston continues at #1 with "Whitney: The Greatest Hits", though it drops four spots to #6 on the Billboard 200 this week. Although sales are beginning to drop for the Houston catalog, she retains six albums in the Top 10 of the Catalog chart and adds a seventh as "Just Whitney…" rises to #10. Seven of the top ten Catalog albums are Whitney Houston albums, topping the six from each of the last three weeks, and the three from four weeks ago.
The last time there were this many albums from the same artist on the top 10 of the Catalog chart for this long was in September and October 2009, when Beatles albums occupied at least six, and as many as nine, positions in the Catalog top 10 for four straight weeks.
With Adele's "19" at #2, albums by female soloists occupy the top five spots on Catalog again this week.
Welcome To The Jungle: Surging up to #31 on the Billboard 200 this week, but only managing #6 on the Catalog chart, is Guns 'N Roses' "Greatest Hits". This is its 249th week in the top 200 albums as a Catalog selection, and it reaches a new high position as a Catalog selection this week, surpassing a previous high of #39 on December 8, 2007. It reached #3 on its original release in 2004, a pretty high position these days for a greatest hits collection.
In addition, "Appetite For Destruction" returns to the Catalog chart and to the Billboard 200. It's the album's first appearance there since an original 147-week run that started in 1987, gained its greatest traction in late 1988 and early 1989, and included five weeks at #1.
New On The Charts: The only new entry on the Catalog chart this week is "The Generous Mr. Lovewell" by MercyMe, which reached #3 on its original release in 2010 and spent 40 weeks on the Billboard 200. It had a 95-week run on the Christian Albums chart, missing only one week since its release, and topped that chart for six weeks. It's the fifth Catalog charting album for MercyMe, and all of the others have reached the top 10. "Almost There" (which featured the adult contemporary hit "I Can Only Imagine") spent 63 weeks on the chart in 2004-2005 and reached #3; "Spoken For" spent just one week on the chart in 2004, but it was at #6; "The Christmas Sessions" had a four-week run between 2006 and 2008, and reached #8; "All That Is Within Me" had a six-week run in 2009-2010 and reached #6.
Four albums return to the Catalog chart after an absence of more than a year. "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'" by 50 Cent continues a string of R&B/rap/hip-hop hit albums returning to the charts in 2012; these have included "Dr. Dre -- 2001" by Dr. Dre, "What's The 411?" by Mary J. Blige, "The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill" by Lauryn Hill, 2Pac's "All Eyez On Me", and Snoop Doggy Dogg's "Doggy Style". "Get Rich" returns for the first time since 2007 for its 62nd week overall; it is a former Catalog #1 (for one week in 2005), and also reached #1 on the Billboard 200.
Another former #1 on both charts is Elvis Presley's "Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits"; it didn't chart at all in 2011 and was last seen in 2010, but returns this week.
The release (and #1 debut) of Bruce Springsteen's "Wrecking Ball" sends his "Greatest Hits" onto the Catalog chart for the first time since 2010; it has only reached #3 on the chart, but spends its 131st week on the charts this week.
The other returning entry is Guns 'N Roses "Appetite For Destruction", last appearning on the Catalog chart in 2010; it bumps up to 419 weeks on the chart, good enough for 20th place among Catalog albums.
Milestones: Eminem's "Curtain Call: The Hits" spends its 150th week among the top 200 albums. It spent 58 weeks on the old Comprehensive chart as a current album, and is now up to 92 weeks on the chart as a Catalog album.
Chart Multiples Update: Two artists are added to the list to bring the total to seven:
1. Eminem: He's becoming a major catalog artist, with a hits album, a "classic" and a recent transition to Catalog status all charting at the same time. He's the only artist besides Whitney Houston with more than two Catalog albums on the chart.
2. Willie Nelson: A large drop for "Super Hits" this week, but "VH1 Storytellers" (with Johnny Cash) holds on to a BB200 position.
3. Johnny Cash: "Super Hits" is the higher of his two selections at #45 Catalog. "VH1 Storytellers" is also on the Billboard 200.
4. Whitney Houston: "The Preacher's Wife" departs from the tally, but seven other albums are all in the Catalog Top 10. All of her albums, however, lose some traction on the Billboard 200.
5. Pink Floyd: Continued sales from "The Wall" reissues last week, though most of the interest was seen last week.
6. Guns 'N Roses: "Appetite For Destruction" joins "Greatest Hits" on the Billboard 200 tally.
7. Elvis Presley: The King goes from zero albums to two, as "Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits" and "An Afternoon In The Garden" both return.
