The first of two major shocks in my opinion is that Janet Jackson has failed to make the top 10! Last time around, Ms Jackson was ranked as the 7th greatest female artist in UKMix history - this time around, she has slipped outside of the top 10, and barely clings on to a top 20 place! What to say about Janet Jackson; well she's sold over 125m records worldwide, is sister to the most successful pop act in music history, has a pretty famous nipple, and looks pretty damn hot with short hair. Janet is a pop and R&B megastar - for over three decades she has captivated her loyal fan base and influenced nigh on every R&B/pop crossover female act that has followed her, from Beyonce, to Rihanna, to Mariah Carey to TLC. Janet could quite easily stake a claim to the title of "most influential R&B female artist of all-time".

As far as voting goes, Janet scores just 7 points less than the act that is one place ahead of her! A massive 18 voters ranked Janet inside of their top 10 - 9 of which ranked her top 3! Janet was voted for by 48 voters in total - which is less than both Jennifer Lopez and Shakira [both of whom ranked lower than her]. But this gives her the edge in terms of average points score - she scores an impressive average points score of 33.

Janet Damita Jo Jackson (born May 16, 1966 in Gary, Indiana, United States) is a Grammy award-winning, and Golden Globe and Academy Award-nominated American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actress. The youngest of the Jackson family, she initially stepped into the limelight in the family’s 1974 Las Vegas production, 1976 television show, and later on her own as a television actress. At age sixteen in 1982, she signed a recording contract with A&M, releasing her self-titled debut album Janet Jackson that same year, followed by Dream Street (1984). In an effort to establish her own identity apart from her famous family, Jackson teamed up with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis in the mid 1980s, creating a superstar-making partnership which has lasted to the present day. Jackson’s breakout album, Control (1986), led to the Grammy-winning albums Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989), janet. (1993), The Velvet Rope (1997), All For You (2001), and Grammy-nominated albums Damita Jo (2004) and 20 Y.O. (2006). In 1990, with the release of Black Cat from her Rhythm Nation 1814 album, Jackson became the first and only artist in Billboard history to score a #1 hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, R&B chart, Dance chart, Adult Contemporary chart, and Rock chart. When “Black Cat” hit #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock singles chart as well as Billboard’s Hot 100, it was the first time a song had hit #1 simultaneously on both of those charts

Ouch.

I think that her showing is pretty poor here - I honestly thought that she was one of the guarantees to go top 10, when I started this.

Wayne scared me with the thread title! I thought that maybe Britney had fallen. :-?

Janet is great, certainly a legend in every aspect of the word. However, I've never really gotten into her music so I can't call myself a big fan. I do, however, love "If" which is my fave song from Ms. Jackson.

Okay, some things you should know...when we get to the top 10, the presentation format will once again change - not sure how. But it'll include more song links, and what I hope will be a better visual impact. And you're only going to get one act per day then. So make the most of your two acts per day - it'll soon be over. 8-)

#17 coming right up! Girls, can you handle this? 8-)

Destiny's Child were a successful girl band that formed in the 1990's and went on recording new music right up until the middle of the 00's. With record sales exceeding 45m worldwide, the group rank as the third highest-selling girl group to form during the 90's, behind the Spice Girls [65m] and TLC [50m]. You'd be hard pushed not to have heard a Destiny's Child song - their repertoire of hit singles defines a period in music that saw a gradual focus from pure pop, to more R&B dominated charts. Each of the three members has gone on to forge a solo career, with varying success.

As for voting, Destiny's Child were by far the most voted for group in the entire countdown, having been voted for by 48 voters. They ranked inside of 16 top 10 sets of votes, and were ranked highest equally by RunDevilRun, joel77m77 & DC34ever - all of whom ranked the group as their #2 female act. Their average points score is 33!

Destiny’s Child was a Grammy-Award winning American R&B girl group comprising lead singer Beyoncé Knowles alongside Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Formed in 1997 in Houston, Texas, Destiny’s Child members began their musical endeavors in their pre-teens under the name Girls’ Tyme, comprising Knowles, Rowland, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. After years of performing underground, they signed to Columbia Records and changed their name. Destiny’s Child was launched into mainstream recognition following the release of their best-selling second album, The Writing’s On The Wall, which contained the number-one singles “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name”. Despite critical and commercial success, the group was plagued by internal conflict and legal turmoil, as LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett attempted to split off the group’s manager Mathew Knowles. They were soon replaced with Williams and Farrah Franklin; however, in 2000, Franklin also parted with the group, leaving them as a trio. Their third album, Survivor, which contains themes the public interpreted as a channel to the group’s experience, contains the worldwide hits “Independent Women”, “Survivor” and “Bootylicious”. In 2002, Destiny’s Child announced a hiatus, allowing its members to attain individual success. They re-united with 2004’s Destiny Fulfilled, and a year later during their world tour, announced that the group would disband and its members would pursue solo careers

I remember hearing DC on the radio all the time when I was growing up. I loved them! "Bootylicious", "Say My Name", "Bills, Bills, Bills", "Independent Woman Part I", "Survivor", "Bug A Boo", "Emotions", "Girl", "Lose My Breath", and "Stand Up For Love" were my jams!

Destiny's Child are BLAH to me. Talented, with some cracking singles - but just so blah.

Always were the inferior TLC in my eyes.

Destiny's Child is a bit overrated, but they have many great singles.

Janet is a bit overrated imo, her music never done anything for me. Destiny's Child Got a few points from me but only cause of their singles, there were far better girl groups Out there.

Gotta agree with this. I do like some DC singles but in general, they don't appeal to me.

My favourites by them are Lose My Breath, Jumpin Jumpin and Nasty Girl.

All the young members of ukmix who voted are responsible for Janet not making the top 5. She's an icon and someone who not comparable to any of the expected top 10 entries.

Janet Jackson is one of the most talented entertainers in music history - the mother to all the britneys and en par with Madonna.

I love her more than 50% of the artists that are still to come.

DC: I never liked them. Only recently I found some appreciation for a handful of their songs. Their success and fame is beyond me.

Janet Jackson is undoubtedly one of the biggest divas in the US. But for some unknown reason, I don't like her as much as I like Celine, Whitney and Mariah. That's why she's ranked as my #33 - she's had a fair amount of great songs though. That said, she ought to be top 10 - one of the most influential female artists of all-time, probably on par with Madonna, in my opinion. Even though she's so huge, I feel that at some times she is overshadowed by Michael Jackson.

Destiny's Child is my #14 - they are undoubtedly my favourite girl-band of all-time. In just a short career span of approximately seven years, they've produced numerous hits - my favourites being "Bootylicious", "Say My Name", "Independent Women", "Survivor" and "You Don't Love Me, No, No, No". IMO the best girl-band of all-time with one of the best female vocalists ever. They've also had a massive influence in other girl bands and in R&B. That is enough for them to be placed top 20 - though I feel that they shouldn't be higher than Janet Jackson.
