the first update from HDD is kind of a pointless tease. it doesn't really tell us much of anything regarding how the final numbers will look. take last week's, for example:

HDD 54.98%
1 1 ADELE XL/COLUMBIA 89,009 21
-- 2 BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN COLUMBIA 81,739 WRECKING BALL

HDD 100%
-- 1 BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: WRECKING BALL - COLUMBIA 201,118
1 2 ADELE: 21 - XL/COLUMBIA 191,645

SoundScan 100%:
1 1 SPRINGSTEEN*BRUCE WRECKING BALL 195,974
1 2 ADELE 21 194,643

Ever if it debuts at #2 it'd be a historical debut anyways.

according to HDD, 1D pulled it off:

-- 1 ONE DIRECTION: UP ALL NIGHT - SYCO/COLUMBIA 177,100 --
2 2 ADELE: 21 - XL/COLUMBIA 156,082 -19%

with that big of a difference, they should be No. 1 on SoundScan too! :D

One Direction Makes History With No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200
by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | March 20, 2012

U.K. pop vocal group One Direction makes history on the Billboard 200 albums chart as the first U.K. group to debut at No. 1 with their debut album. "Up All Night" enters atop the list with 176,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Previously, the highest bow for a U.K. group's first album came on Feb. 22, 1997, when Spice Girls' "Spice" started at No. 6. The album eventually climbed to No. 1 in its 14th week on the list, spending five nonconsecutive frames in the penthouse.

"Up All Night's" lead single, "What Makes You Beautiful," debuted at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 a month ago. That marked the highest entry by a U.K. group's debut single since Spice Girls' "Wannabe" bowed at No. 11 on Jan. 25, 1997.

Formed on the 2010 edition of the U.K.'s "X Factor" TV program, One Direction comprises Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. All of the group members hail from the U.K., save for Horan, who is from Ireland. The act has nabbed three top three U.K. singles and its debut album hit No. 2 in November 2011.

For the past two weeks, One Direction mania has been in full swing in the U.S., as the group did numerous album-signing events at shopping malls and performed on NBC's "Today" show on March 12. The group's record label, SYCO/Columbia, says that over 10,000 fans showed up for the "Today" gig -- its first live TV performance in America.

One Direction also recently wrapped a 10-date concert tour of the U.S., where they opened for Big Time Rush. Coincidentally, One Direction's No. 1 start on the Billboard 200 is the highest debut for a pop vocal group's first album since Big Time Rush's "BTR" landed at No. 3 on Oct. 30, 2010.

Our regular recap of the week's top 10 selling albums and songs will be available on Wednesday morning.

Canada

Move over, Justin Bieber. There's some new heartthrobs taking over the attention of young girls.

British pop sensations One Direction, who first grabbed eyes and ears by being on the U.K. version of the "X-Factor," stormed the charts this week with their debut album "Up All Night," and they are setting records in the process.

The disc, powered by their hit single "What Makes You Beautiful," shot to No. 1 in Canada, selling 35,000, according to data supplied by Neilsen SoundScan.

The results were just as impressive south of the border, where they checked in at No. 1, selling 176,000 copies of "Up All Night" in the U.S.

It marks the first time a British group has hit No. 1 in Canada and U.S. with their debut album.

Yes, a drop of ~ 65-69% is quite huge.
Although you could say that the first-week-sales have been surprisingly high so perhaps it's balancing this out.

I dont think its that bad when you consider the front loaded effect of their main demo.

JB fell 72% in the second weeks of their last two albums. Longevity from now on is key here. The first single is still building. We have nothing to worry about, for now.

Even in the past few years, teen acts plateau at around 2 million copies in total album sales so this really is not a surprise. They will sell better than say Selena Gomez & the Scene at least.
