What do you think of The Velvet Rope.
Its one of my favorites from her and I can see why people say this is her best album. Janet at her creative peak. The only songs I don't care for are You and Free Xone (even though I like the story and message). Everything else is wonderful.

I think her performances that era were AMAZING!!!. A lot of people could learn from her if they watch the Velvet Rope concert. One of the best concerts I've ever watched.

Well whatever...

If you honestly believe that Mariah's singing is generally void of emotion...

...then I have nothing more to say to you.
I said some songs, not "generally". Don't have selective reading.
Even in "some" of those songs, BlueScorpion, there is always a warmth about her singing. A warmth that is present in Janet's music and Michael's music and Luther's music and that's not present in Madonna's music or Harry Nilsson's music.

You know what that warmth is called?

That's soul.

And that soul is what allowed her to have her records crossover into the R&B spectrum.

ForeverYoung wrote:I get what Titan is saying when he describes Janet's voice as "weak". Even when Janet belts, she doesn't have that astonishing power. In that sense, yes her voice is weak.
Thank you.

That's doesn't take anything away from her vocal abilities though. The emotion and just the actual tone of Janet's voice is unparalleled to me. One only has to listen to the acapella-ish intro of "Better Days" to hear how emotional her voice is. I like that better than the voice of say Whitney or Patti LaBelle.
+1

Thank you again.

And she has an amazing range too; just take a listen to the whole "Love Will Never Do (Without You)".
I think people put too much emphasis on range. Having an amazing/big range does not mean that you are a better singer.

If anything, big voices are difficult to train and even harder to master.

So big voices with big ranges can be both a blessing and a curse.

That said: Janet has a really nice voice. It roughly spans from an D3 to approximately Bb5. That's pretty big: but Janet's voice simply doesn't have the girth and the power of Michael's voice, Whitney's voice or even Rihanna's voice.

But what matters is that she uses it extremely well.

Whitney or Celine could never sing a song like 'What About', 'Every Time' or 'Love Will Never Do'.
Janet Jackson the only artist in history to be nominated for a Grammy in Pop, Rock, Dance, R&B, Rap, Album of the Year & Best Video.

You're right about Celine.

But I do know that Whitney would've torn What About and Love Will Never Do up...

Every Time? I have to re-listen to it to be sure but if I were to give you an answer right now: no. Whitney probably would have to change practically everything about the song.

U did not just say Rihanna is a better singer?
Her tone is like a woman going through treatment for a sex change.
Janets voice is feminine, sweet, sensual, honey like.

You're right. I did not just say that Rihanna is a better singer.

I really don't mean this in a rude way but you need to go re-read my post.

Janet Jackson is currently working on an untitled movie with Lionsgate. She is also executive producing a documentary on transgender people, called "T Project," and plans to travel to the Sahel Belt in Africa to help the silent emergencies occurring there.

As much as I appreciate the fact she's very consistent at her film career, I'd LOVE her to concentrate more on some real music.

I am glad she's more frequently acting, but I'd like another album before another movie

Janet Jackson is still slimming down.

The singer is unveiling new Nutrisystem ads - the TV spot debuts on Monday and print ads at the end of April - to showcase her weight-loss success.

The 5-foot-4 yo-yo dieter doesn't want to talk about the number on the scales -- although in December the company said she had lost 10 pounds in a little more than a month.

"I'm not viewing this as a diet," she told USA TODAY's Nanci Hellmich at the time. "I'm not putting a number on it. I don't look at the scale. I'm going about it in a different way this time." She doesn't need to lose "a great amount," she said, adding that she would stop "when I feel good about it."

Janet Jackson expected in Kinshasa (translated):

The artist singer Janet Jackson, is expected in Kinshasa later this year as part of a humanitarian project, said Arthur Tongo, a Congolese producer living in Toronto, Canada, received by a chain instead . According to Mr. Tongo, the subject of the show that the American Star will deliver is to raise awareness of the "fight against all kinds of violence against girls and women are Congolese victims."

He announced that he came, in the Congolese capital, conduct a feasibility study of that humanitarian project whose "revenues would be used for social works in favor of the women concerned." Janet Jackson will play in Kinshasa on the same podium with Werrason Ngiama who have already accepted the terms of the contract.

Moreover, Arthur Tongo negotiates a special production that will on the same stage in Canada, the two singers of the old Wenge Musica 4 × 4, respectively, and JB Mpiana Werrason. This will be the first time since their breakup, nearly two decades, these two pop stars brighten the Congolese public on the same podium.

I don't think she will have an album anytime soon, perhaps in 2014-2016.

I was watching footage off of the RN Tour yesterday, and her dancing was on some whole other level.

The Control/ Nasty intro especially. Better than anything Micheal's ever done.

I always thought her dancing was better than Michael's!

Her voice is amazing. The tone is so pure, though it's a soft tone (I don't throw around the term weak... that has a different meaning for me). But she is definitely a living legend with the discography and visible impact to back it up.

With that said, I'd like to see a launch at a full-scale comeback musically. I don't just mean the good music, but with "in your face" promotion and the hype of a well-planned tour!!!

I'd like to see Janet do this AND continue to act! One of the few singers that can actually act!!!
"Take A Bow"... Rihanna's ONLY ballad to go #1 on the Hot 100 (also topped the R&B Chart)... Great deed for her most epic ballad!!!

It's true.

Janet's actually a very seasoned actress: her acting career predates her music career.

I want Janet to get that Oscar.

Michael was more improvisational with his dancing. Like his dancing basically revolved around the same ten or so dances...

And thinking back on his dancing abilities, that's extremely impressive.

Janet's dancing has always been choreography heavy. Which is something else to really admire...

...because choreography takes a lot of work.
