I'd say at one point they were like Coldplay where they could successfully straddle the line of pop and rock/alternative. Harder To Breathe and even This Love got airplay on rock stations and they were considered alternative. Their second album pretty much killed them to rock formats, and then Moves Like Jagger pretty much makes them as likely to get played as Justin Bieber. Coldplay does a better job at being able to be both pop and rock/alt without selling out too far... yes they worked with Rihanna but even then there's still enough on Mylo Xyloto to appeal to the rock side of their fanbase as it does their pop fans.

I always considered them to be poppy, of course. But it depends on what kind of pop. If it's the "pop" of It Won't be Soon Before Long or Hands All Over, then I'm all for it. If it's even poppier than MLJ and then an entire album of it... I don't know.

The thing I fear most is that, because of Max Martin, the entire album will sound like Katy Perry on testosterone

Obviously, Adam Levine's appeal to mainstream audiences have also contributed to them being seen as a pop act. :)

I'm excited for this, their last 2 albums had nothing on their debut so hopefully this will be a return to form.

I like Maroon 5 but Moves Like Jagger was awful so I hope it's nothing like that.

I reckon Moves Like Jagger could be the most overplayed pop song last year!
Im interested to hear what this will be like though, Their last album was awful.

'Moves Like Jagger' was fantastic (and one of the highest selling songs of all-time here), it was however, diabolically overplayed... and I still hear it daily!!

They should do something like This Love again, not a club banger! There are lots of other people doing that stuff already.

I never got the Tedder thing, he's this "rock dude" and yet works with all these pop stars and divas.... he's married, so its pointless. It isn't like when Gene Simmons was working with Cher and Diana Ross in the 1970's... BECAUSE HE WAS BANGING THEM

I'm pretty sure that they will go with a sound like that of MOVES LIKE JAGGER, briefly influenced by electro sounds on top of a rock poppish tune... which IMO makes them more noticeable in this business... I don't mind though as Maroon 5 were never one of my favourites with their old funk pop style...

Moves Like Jagger was overplayed, but is probably their most commercially appealing song so I also think they might continue in that direction.

^Max Martin is the executive producer of their new album, so I'm think a good pop/rock songs. Although I don't like this band!

Everyone is doing the generic electro-pop thing they're doing though. Their funk/pop/rock sound definitely was more unique, and like it or not sold more ALBUMS (in the US Songs About Jane sold nearly 5 million, Hands All Over hasn't gone platinum int he US yet with MLJ added to the tracklisting).

Would you like MLJ if Xtina wasn't on it? I liked them from Harder To Breathe, thought the second album was okay, the third album wasn't bad but nothing special, but MLJ pretty much killed them for me. They need to get back to their roots to gain back any credibility.
