Billboard 200/Catalog Albums Chart Update - March 31, 2012

Guns 'N Quarters: The recent 25-cent sale promotions by Google and Amazon have created a monster, as Guns 'N Roses' "Greatest Hits", recently featured as a sale item, jumps all the way to its original peak position of #3 with sales of over 80 thousand. It surges right past Whitney Houston's greatest hits album and Adele's "19", which both hold their position in the top 200; they drop to #2 and #3 on Catalog, respectively. The Guns 'N Roses collection was perched at #160 three weeks ago, and was even off of the top 200 for a week this year. Last week, there was a skein of titles that got the 25-cent treatment, with several returning to the top 10, but none have made it a greater distance up the chart than this collection from 2004.
Billboard will likely continue to tweak their policies with regard to super-sale items, but one thing is for certain: If you want to sell 80K copies of an album, you have to produce something that people want to buy - even if only for a quarter.

Houston's Fifth: This is the sixth straight week with three or more Whitney Houston albums in the top 10 of the Catalog chart. This includes six or more albums in each of the last five weeks, with seven albums in the top 10 each of the last two weeks. Only Michael Jackson and The Beatles have had more albums simultaneously in the Catalog top 10, and only Michael Jackson has had half or more of the top 10 for as many weeks in a row as the five that Houston has currently. Michael Jackson monopolized the entire catalog Top 10 for three straight weeks (with Jackson 5 albums included); even discounting the Jackson 5, Jackson had five or more albums in the top 10 as an individual artist for 11 straight weeks between July and September 2009.

New On The Charts: None of the nine entries on the Catalog chart this week are first time entries. Six of them were previously on the chart in 2012, and the other three were on the chart in 2011. These include Flogging Molly's "Drunken Lullabies", an album that tends to get sales around St. Patrick's Day; "Beethoven's Last Night", the only non-Christmas related Trans-Siberian Orchestra album to have reached the Catalog chart; and Lil' Wayne's "Tha Carter III", which returns after an absence of almost six months.

Milestones: Simultaneous with its surge to #1, Guns 'N Roses' "Greatest Hits" spends its 250th week among the top 200 selling albums as a Catalog album; this tacks onto its original run of 138 weeks as a current album. It is also one of only two albums reaching a new high position as a Catalog album on the Billboard 200 this week. The other is Drake's "Thank Me Later" (#130).
Justin Bieber's "My World 2.0" reaches two straight years on the Billboard 200, with all 104 weeks spent consecutively since its release. It is down to #175 this week, so the streak is in jeopardy.
Florence + The Machine's "Lungs" reaches half a year (26 weeks) on the Catalog chart this week. It has the third longest current consecutive week streak, behind only Adele's "19" and Taylor Swift's "Fearless".

Chart Multiples Update: Guns 'N Roses and Elvis Presley depart from the list, but the total drops by only one to six artists:
1. Eminem: There's no slowdown in Eminem's recovery, as "Recovery" vaults to #64 and is the highest-ranked Catalog album not by Whitney Houston, Adele, or Guns 'N Roses.
2. Willie Nelson: "VH1 Storytellers" (with Johnny Cash) and "Super Hits" both continue runs near the bottom of the charts.
3. Johnny Cash: Like Willie Nelson, he charts with "VH1 Storytellers" (with Willie Nelson) and "Super Hits".
4. Whitney Houston: All seven of her chart selections are in the Catalog Top 10, and in the top 80 of the Billboard 200, with the hits album holding at #6.
5. Pink Floyd: "The Wall" continues its recent bump; "Dark Side" slides off of the Billboard 200 but remains at the bottom of the Catalog chart.
6. Taylor Swift: "Taylor Swift" makes a solid re-entry on the Billboard 200, just ahead of "Fearless".
