Billboard 200/Catalog Albums Chart Update - April 7, 2012
Whitney Returns (No Fooling): Whitney Houston's "Whitney: The Greatest Hits" returns to the top spot on the Catalog chart for the sixth time in the last seven weeks since her passing.
Guns 'N Roses are yesterday's news, as the end of the "quarter sale" on their greatest hits albums predictably causes it to slide to more typical levels: it's down 148 spots on the Billboard 200 to #151, and drops from #1 to #34 on the Catalog chart. There have been 28 drops from #1 right out of the top 10 on Catalog, including the drop for Guns 'N Roses this week; ten of these have been larger than the 33-position drop seen this week, including six drops straight out of the catalog Top 50 from the top position. The last drop from #1 larger than Guns 'N Roses 33-position drop where the album remained on the chart was for "My Christmas" by Andrea Bocelli, which dropped from #1 to #43 on January 15 of last year. The last larger drop not involving a Christmas album, where the dropping album remained on the chart, was "I Can Only Imagine: Platinum Edition", a compilation album that dropped from #1 to #37 on April 11, 2009. Chris Tomlin recorded the most recent drop right off the Catalog chart from #1, when "See The Morning" was #1 on April 17, 2010, and out of the top 50 on April 24.
With seven straight weeks in the Top 10, "Whitney: The Greatest Hits" is now tied for the third-longest run in the Top 10 for a Catalog album with Michael Jackson's "Thriller" (although "Thriller" spent a total of 13 weeks in the Top 10). "The Essential Michael Jackson" was in the Top 10 for nine straight weeks, and "Number Ones" for 11 straight weeks, after Michael Jackson's death. ("Number Ones" spent 14 weeks in the Top 10 overall.)
Trivia Question: What is the only Catalog album to reach #1 but spend only one week in the Catalog top ten? (Answer below above the Catalog chart.)
New On The Charts: Two new entries this week are both by first timers on the Catalog chart. Electronic/house/dubstep artist Anthony Zimmerman, known by his stage name of deadmau5, comes in at #36 with 2008's "deadmau5 At Play". Country music star Lee Brice enters with "Love Like Crazy" at #38; he made it to #44 on the Billboard 200 with that album in 2010, and #9 on the Top Country Albums chart.
One of the six re-entries reaches the chart for the first time in 2012: The Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D.", which charted for 38 weeks in 2011 (plus the last week of 2010) and was #1 on Catalog for three weeks. It was #1 on the big chart for two weeks in 2009, the year of its release.
Milestones: Lynyrd Skynyrd reaches 100 weeks on the top 200 albums with their Millennium Collection hits package. It spent 27 weeks on the Billboard 200 as a current album in 1999 and 2000 (though it never got past #146); fifteen more on the Comprehensive chart between 2004 and 2009, with a high-water mark of #110 in 2005; and 58 weeks, including the last 39 in a row, on the Billboard 200 as a Catalog album, reaching an all-time high of #60 on April 30, 2011. At 179 weeks on the Catalog chart, it's 20 weeks shy of surpassing Lynyrd Skynyrd's longest-charting Catalog selection, "Skynyrd's Innyrds". They have a third hits package, "All Time Greatest Hits", that has not charted in a while but also has a long Catalog run of 175 weeks.
Chart Multiples Update: No changes to the list of artists with two or more Catalog albums:
1. Eminem: "Curtain Call" is closing in on 100 weeks in the Top 200 as a Catalog album; all three of his selections have reached the top 60 during their Catalog span.
2. Willie Nelson: "VH1 Storytellers" (with Johnny Cash) and "Super Hits" both continue their runs. "VH1" returns to the top 150.
3. Johnny Cash: Like Willie Nelson, he charts with "VH1 Storytellers" (with Willie Nelson) and "Super Hits".
4. Whitney Houston: Despite some gains near the top of the Catalog chart, two of her seven albums leave the top 10, and all of her albums drop on the Billboard 200. "Whitney: The Greatest Hits" returns to #1 on the Catalog chart and remains in the Top 10 overall.
5. Pink Floyd: "The Wall" continues its recent bump; "Dark Side" returns near the bottom of the Billboard 200.
6. Taylor Swift: "Taylor Swift" holds its position while "Fearless" makes a solid gain.

Trivia Answer: NAS' "Illmatic: 10 Year Anniversary Platinum Series" holds the dubious distinction of being the only Catalog #1 with only one week in the top 10. It entered the Catalog chart at #1 on April 17, 2004, then dropped to #11 and has never returned to the top 10. (Honorable mention: At the time it first hit the Catalog chart in 2008, Coldplay's "X&Y" had only one week in the top 10, and that at #1, but it got one more week in the top ten in 2011 as it returned for Coldplay's new album "Mylo Xyloto".)
Catalog Notes: "Fearless" by Taylor Swift jumps 18 positions after jumping 12 last week, and re-enters the Catalog top 10, where it has gotten as high as #6. Swift's debut album holds at #25 and reaches 90 weeks on the chart.
