The UK has a new number number 1 single, and for the second week running, the highest new entry lands straight in at the top. This week’s new chart topper it’s a long awaited number 1 hit for US R&B/Dance star Chris Brown entitled ‘Turn up the music’, it’s his 18th UK Top 40 hit and biggest to date, beating the number 2 peaks of ‘Run it’ in 2006 and ‘Champion’ in 2011.
The nearest contender for the top was Sean Paul’s ‘She doesn’t mind’ which spends a second week at number 2, just over 24000 copies behind ‘Turn up the music’.
Nicki Minaj’s ‘Starships’ may have missed out on the number 1 spot, but she’s enjoying chart longevity with the hit, that’s now the biggest of her career, it rises back up 2 places to number 3 in its 7th week on the countdown even outselling last week’s number 1, Katy Perry’s ‘Part of me’, which moves down 3 places to number 4.
Also climbing back up is Flo Rida and Sia’s ‘Wild ones’, now in its 10th week inside the top 10 it rises 1 to number 7. Flo’s last hit ‘Good feeling’ had a the longest run in the top 10 of all his hits, spending 11 weeks in the top quarter of the countdown, but, in spite of not hitting number 1, could ‘Wild ones’ be about to match or beat that record?
The second-highest new entry arrives at 6; a 6th UK Top 40 hit for Brit rapper Plan B, ‘Ill manors’ immediately becomes the second-biggest hit of his career, beaten only by his number 3 hit ‘She said’ in 2010.
Jessie J’s long running former number 1 hit ‘Domino’ makes a u-turn just outside the top 10, rising a place to number 13 in its 14th charting week.
There’s frustration for Jason Mraz; ‘I won’t give up’ spends another week at its peak of number 15 in its 3rd week on the countdown, still 4 places shy of the number 11 peak of his only other hit ‘I’m yours’ in 2008. Succeeding in climbing to new peaks however are Azealia Banks & Lazy Jay’s ‘212’, up 6 to 14 and LMFAO’s ‘Sorry for party rocking’, up 6 to 23, while
Rihanna & Jay Z’s ‘Talk that talk’ rises 3, returning to its previous number 25 peak
Continuing its new lease of life is Drake and Rihanna’s ‘Take care’, it rises 11 to number 29 in its 17th cumulative charting week.
Labrinth’s ‘Last time’ may be plummeting down the top 10, but a small consolation for him is the return of his previous number 2 hit ‘Earthquake’ re-enters at 31, bringing its total weeks on the countdown up to 21.
There are more new entries to report; at 28 Olly Murs enters the chart with his 6th UK Top 40 hit ‘Oh my goodness’, following up his 3rd chart topper ‘Dance with me tonight’ which rises back up a place to number 32 in its 19th week on the countdown.
At 35 is the long awaited arrival of ‘If you wanna’, a second UK Top 40 hit for UK Indie Rock band The Vaccines. The song first entered the UK Top 75 exactly one year ago at number 53 and until today hasn’t charted any higher. It finally follows up ‘Post break up sex’ which peaked at 32 in February last year.
The final new entry lands at 35; the chart debut for dance act B.Traits with their hit entitled ‘Fever’.
The big losers of the week on the singles chart are Labrinth who slides 5 to 9 with ‘Last time’ in only its second week on the countdown, JLS who slide 14 places from 6 to 20 with ‘Proud’ and You Me at Six’s ‘The swarm’ slides to 26 after a number 23 new entry last week. Rihanna’s ‘We found love’ finally dips out of the top 40, sliding 7 to 41 after 25 weeks on the countdown, just missing out on scoring a straight 6 month run in the top 40; interestingly the song she denied the number 1 spot (after 5 other artists had already done so), Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera’s ‘Moves like Jagger’ manages to hang on to the top 40 by the skin of its teeth, sliding a place to number 39 after no less than 33 weeks on the countdown.
Next week, Canadian star Carly Rae Jepson will no doubt make a significant impact on the singles chart with her debut single ‘Call me maybe’, originally scheduled for release on April 23rd, it was rush released today, most likely as a result of the potential sales lost by several copy-cat versions, two of which are in this week’s top 100; Carly Rae Jepson Tribute Team’s version at 49 and Hitmaster’s version at 72. Also likely to enter the chart next week is Alex Day’s second single ‘Lady Godiva’ and currently selling strongly as a result of exposure on BBC’s ‘The Voice’, The Script’s ‘The man who can’t be moved’ could re-enter the top 40 in 7 days time, it currently sits at number 61, most likely a result of sales yesterday evening.
On the albums chart Madonna makes chart history as ‘MDNA’ enters at number 1 making her the first artist ever to have 12 UK Number 1 albums, the record of 11 previously being held by Elvis Presley. Frustratingly for David Guetta fans, ‘MDNA’ outsold ‘Nothing but the beat’ (which is still yet to hit the top) by 34000 copies, it stays at number 2 for a second week having climbed to the runner up spot last Sunday.
Last week’s album chart topper, Paul Weller’s ‘Sonic Kicks’ plummets 9 places to number 10.
Interestingly, 3 of the 4 of the climbers in this week’s album chart top 10 are former number 1’s; Emeli Sande’s former number 1 ‘Our version of events’ rises a place to 3 in its 7th week on the countdown, Adele’s phenomenally successful chart topper ‘21’ rises a place to 4, Jessie J’s former number 2 ‘Who you are’ leaps 18 to number 5 and the newly re-released former number 1 Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage dream’ rockets up 26 places to number 6. The Album Chart Top 10 contains a total of 8 number 1 albums.
